Spathtp oo 4 1s st PO ; SON’S PREPARATIONS . D)%or tie Tooth—for ale by E, F, SPENCE, . Pevada Democrat. . Important Sulit Involving nearly Half a Million Dollars. Most old residents will remember tbe horrible tragedy commitied at Grass Valley, in 1857, when Michael Brennan killed his wife and childrea and then blew bis own brains out, The cause of it was known to have been financial difficulties, but their extent was bever known, A suit was commenced ——— . in the United States Circuit Court this morning, by the Mount Hope Mining Company, whose office is in New York, against Andre Chevanne, whieh will throw light upon the whole matter, and disclose some further developments regarding the affair. The complaint in this case says that Brennan made several mortgages to the mines of the above named Company, for which he was acting as agent, in favor of Chevanue, the smallest of which was for $3,000—and the largest, which was an absolute deed, though intended as a mortgage, was for $65,900; that be allowed judgments to be obtained against the company by default, and without opposition, and the mines to be sold under execution to Chevanne until be had obtained full control over them, It is charged that for these several mortgages and deeds Chevanne never paid any consideration, and they were false and fraudulent. Since the death of Brennan, Chevanne bas been working the claim, and. they allege, bas taken out $397,000 from the mines, besides other sume which he hae received. The mines upon his taking'possession of them in March 1857, were worth not less than $150,000. The plainteffs now ask that they may be pat in poseession of the property; that the deeds mortgages, judgments and conveyances made by Brennan or obtained through his connivance, may be set aside as fraudu.ant; that Chevanne be made to disgorge this $397,000, which he has obtained from the mine; that an injunction may be issved against farther operations in the premises, and that a receiver be appointed. This is the gist of the complaint, which covers over a hundred pages of lege) paper. Taking it altogetber, the amount of pro erty involved, the tragic end of Brennan, and the circumstances connected therewith, this is one of the most important and interesting suits which hae been commenced in the State for a long time, and is likely to excite a great deal of attention.—([S. F. Balletio, 14th. From Esmpratpa.—Mr, H.T. Parlin arrived in town yesterday, with a team, from Aorora, for the purpose of returning with a load of flour, potatoes, etc. Immediately on bis arrival bere he concladed not to take any flour back, for the good reason that none could be purchased in our market. That article is now extremely scarce in Aurora, and selling for $24 per hundred. Mr. Parlin informe us that at least half the men in that locality have been without flour for the last month, and on sbort allowance otherwise. But little work is now going on at Eemeralda, in consequence of the men having become too weak to labor, owing to the difficulty of procuring enough to eat, This, however, will be speedily remedied, as Mr. Van Sickle sent over 13,000 pounds met whilst comiog in. He also met Mr. Kaufman with 5,000 pounds of the staff of life, destined for Aurora, which had been purchased of Van Sickle, A correspondent writes us that tbree tuns of float rock were cleaned up by the Clayton silver process which yielded $118 per tun. The Emperor and Aitoa companies shipped several thousaud dollars in bullion by the last express, Mr. Bagley, of Brown & Co’s stage line, has also furnished us a few items from Esmeralda. A new lead has been struck on Middle Hill, about a mile southeast of Au. rora, which is represented to be very rich . in gold. The soldiers sent out to the relief of the . Owens’ river party, left Acrora about the . first of April. No further news had been received there from Owens’ river. Including the soldiers and citizens, 76 men had gone to the relief of the party in the fort. If they succeed in reaching their destination it will make the entire force of whites on the Owens’ river about 116, It is hoped . that they will be able to make their way out . in the fort from being maesacred.—([Carson . City Age. Fort Mosave.—This post, says the Los of flour some days ago, which Mr. Parlio . making a noise, Angeles News, we believe, ebould be garri-. considerably. But theee kicks t soned atonce. This route has for some . ceive are unfelt at the time, so NUMBER 601. The San Franciseo eorreepondent of the Sacramento Bee has the following remarks upon Gov. Stanford’s late political manifesto. The Governor, ié will be remembered, announced bie determination to stick to bis own party organization, but advised Union men of other parties to drop their organizations, for the sake of the Union: In all this, Governor Stanford has been advised by Governor Nye, of Nevada Territory. He bas been with Governor Stanford constantly, and bas succeeded ia impressing upon his miod the actua) neeessity of keeping afloat the banners of Republicanism. I wrote you yesterday that J believed this letier-writiog was a trap in which Governor Stanfurd was to be ensnared, I maivtain that belief, for I do not bebieve that all thore who addressed the Jetter to the Govervor asking bim for bis views, will, now (bat be bas acceded to their demands, sustain him in the ex ion of those sentiments, as contained in that letter, This may prove a worse trap than that into which Governor Downey was drawn when prevailed upoo to write bis famous anti-coercion letter; said letter baving been read to Senator Latham, sat ee and others, and approved by them. This letter of Governor Steoford’s was read to a select few, who nodded, as if approving, aod who now say they are not to be conaks by any such chaff as that contained therein. Coming events, it is said, cast their shadaws before, and ifI should wake up some fine morning and read in the 1 sa re of the day that Governor Nye, of Nevada Territory, intended to enter the list for a position in the gift of this State, I should not be at all surprised, but should say, “well, that event cast its shadows as far back as April, 1862.”’ All the old Senatorial contests of the past willbe no comparison to that one which is to take place next Winter, It will go far beyond (in legerdemain) anything the celebrated prestidigitator, Hermann, could accomplisn. There are many more things done in politics, Mesers. editors, than either you or I dreamed of in P-. our philosophy; aod as time wags on, we will see bow wonderfully strange some combinations are made. Time, that great developer of human events, will "present to our astonished gaze much to interest and instruct, The letter bas caused the queerest variety of opinion I have ever listened to, It is denounced by some, laughed at by others, treated seriously by a few, aud passed without the slightest notice by a great many. It will have the effect to split the Republican party in twaio, Sivou.aR Exorrement 1n Stocxtox.—The colored population, generally, of our city are Jaboring under a singular excitement, For several weeks past a protracted meeting has been held in their church, daring which time a namber bave “had religion.’’ Not coatent with baving night meetings, boldiog on until 2 o'clock in the morning, . they now hold day meetings at each other's houses. Daring the meetings they shout and sing and hug each other; they jump up on benches and tables, and stamp and kick, as described b & spectator, “like a stampede of a busdred hortes in a stable!’ Going into these meetings with neat clothing they come ont with it torn aod disarranged; breastpins are torn off and trampled under foot in the melee. Each holloas as loud as possible; they buck their heads against the benches and sides of the building, giving themselves blows that on ordinary occasions would knock them down if not render them ingensible. Some imagine they see Jesus standing in the room dressed in white; while others believe they see himin the form of a dove hoverioy around the preacher’s head, flying in and out of the window. Those who get in this condition, strain their eye-balls at the object they believe they see ae ifthey would burst them from their sockets, and shout and jamp like maniacs, The whole congregation jump about the room, clappiog their hands, kicking off their shoes, and shouting in @ manner to drown an Indian war whoop —presenting a scene like the Obeah dance 1 Sigg in Africa and the West India Isands, Wheo they become anusually exci. ted they imagine they have the devil in the ‘through the Indians, or at least reecue those . °0™, and all commence kicking calling it “kicking the devil around the at him, stump.” Of course they kick at air, but sometimes make mistakes and give each other extraordinary blows; one woman on a bench kicking a man on the jaw, swelling it hey thus ret ie their time been open for the uninterrupted pae. excitement. We judge the devil woald have sage of persons from California to the rebel . States. It is believed that one party of men . ® poor show among them. At one of these meetings, yesterday, one of their number, who left the State to take up arms against . after shouting, kicking off bie shoes and the Government made their escape by tbat route since the arrest of Showalter; that others will do the same there can be no doubt. A stir in this manner of leaving is still going on in California; others witksoon try it on. tearing bis coat, ran out into the street and jamped into a deep paddle of water, in bis excitement, If this be long continued it is to be feared a large portion of our negro ill petertiaice ops Se
