eval Democrat. —_—_— LOCAL MATTERS. District Covrt.—The case of Thos. Burke vas called up again yesterday morning, and from the additional jurrors summoned, the requisite number was empannelled without difficulty. ‘he evidence adduced on the trial showed the facts of the killing of Wright about the sume as has heretofore been published. The case having been argued by counsel, was given to the jury alittle after nine o’clock in the evening, and after consulting about a quarter of an hour, they brought in a verdict of murder in the first degree. He is to be sen_ tenced on Tuesday next, at ten o’clock A.M, Phe case of Jonathan Peel, indicted for the murder of aman named Ellis, near French Corral, was taken up this morning, a jury empannelled, and the trial is now progressing. Town Evection.—The official order for the election of city officers will be found in another eolumn. The ofticers to be elected are five Trustees,a Marshal, Treasurer and Assessor, and the polls will be opened in Lonis’ brick building, on Main street. The principal contest will be for Marshal, that being the only pay office, and it is probable there will be several candidates for Assessor. The office of Trustee is not a desirable one, but it is necessary that some should serve in that capacity, and what is more particularly required is, that men should be selected who will attend to the duties. Finz.—A fire caught in an out-house, adjoining the residence of Mr, Ed. Muller, at the head of Commercial street, about half past eleven this forenoon. The flames were extinguished by means of a garden hose, without causing any alarm. New Firm.—Mr. McCormick, an experienced druggist, has purchased of Dr. Bates a one half interest in the Broad Street Drug Store. The advertisement of the new firm will be seen in another column. Lerrens.—The total number of letters sent from the Nevada Postoffice, for the quarter ending April lst, was 6,250—averaging about 70 a day. SAN FRANCISCO AND SAN Jose RAILROAD. —The Bulletin has a lengthy article upon this railroad, from which we gather the following facts: The contractors have engaged to build the road, stock it, put up the depots and turn over the road in perfect order to the company for $2,000,000, taking for their pay $600,000 in county bonds, $400,000 in cash, $500,000 in railroad bonds, und the same amount in stock. Of the fifty miles between San Jose and San Francisco, thirty-nine are graded, and the work is now being pushed forward to completion as rapidly as posssible. The ties and timber have been contracted for and are mostly on the ound; the iron is said to be shipped for Cahor and the cars and rolling stock have been contracted for in the Kast. The present prospect is that the road will be completed by the first of January next. Coxsttate APPoINTMENTS.— Among the appointments by the President, latesy eoufirmed by the Senate, are the following con~ suls: Israel S. Diehle, California, to Batavia. Thomas D. Howard, Pennsylvania, to Sam Juan del Sur. , William Btanchard, District of Columbia, to. Melbourne. Allen Frances, Illinois, to Victoria, V. I. Horace N Cengar, New York, to Honkong. Warren C. Foster, Connecticut, to Carthaa. wei Ottenbourg, Wisconsin, to the City; ef Mexico. ; Thomas H. Dudley, New Jersey, taLiverpool. , John Bigelow, New York, to Paris. Tur Tennessee State Hovse.—The new eapital which stands on a commanding eminence one hundred and seventy-five feet above the river, is one of the most noble, magnificent and costly structures in America. The material is fine limestone, whieh was quarried on the spot, and nearly. resembling marble. The dimensions are 240 feet by 185, and the estimated cost is $1,000,000. It is built as it is stated, entirely of stone and iron, witho ut any wood about it, except the plank on which the a roofing is fastened; the floor and inner walls are of dressed stone. Decay or A ReseRvation.— The Red Bluff Beacon says the old Nome Lackee Indian Reservation is going to decay. The lands are being settled on by citizens, the Indians having generally left; bats. and owls are living in the tenements at headquarters, and the adobe uses are crumbling and falling to the ground. ere are but thirty Indians. left on the Reservation. Tue Chicago Tribune accounts for Gen@:al Phelps’ strange proclamation, by say ing that “he was aware how wide a range bis predecessors in proclamation bad traveled over, and he desired-4o occupy the rest. of the ground,’”’ Ir is estimated by commercial: authoritie that the enhanced. rate of duty on tea, coffee,. sugar and molasses, will give the Government: That will pony aes f the.
