Hevada Democrat. —e LOCAL MATTERS, District Covurt—Tne Crrmtnar TrIats. —The trial of Jonathan Peel, for the killing of Wn. Ellis, near French Corral, resulted in his conviction for manslaughter. The case was given to the jury about five o’clock Thursday evening, and after an absence ef about fifteen minutes, they returned into court, having agreed upon the verdict. He will be sentenced next Tuesday, at ten o’clock, a. M. Henry Searls, who killed the Chinaman, Ah Sing, in October last, was tried yesterday. The ease was submitted to the jury about four o'clock in the afternoon, and at half past nine they brought in a verdict of acquittal. There was no direct evidence that Searls killed the Chinaman, but the circumstances of the affair were of a character to leave but little, if any, doubt of his guilt. One witness testified that Searls was the only white man in the house, and it was shown that Ah Sing was shot by a white man who came out ofthe house about the same time. The witness, however, who saw the Chinaman killed could not identify Searls as the man who fired the fatal shot. We understand that four of the jurors were in favor of convicting him of manslaughter, but after hanging out for five or six hours they consented to a verdict of acquittal. The trial of Mulligan, one of the parties indicted for the murder of Juan Revares, at Cherokee, was set for to-day, but in consequence of the illness of his counsel, the case was postponed until Monday There are four persons, in all, under indictn.ent for the Cherokee murder, They will be tried next week, unless it shoold appear by the facts elicited on the trial of Mulligan that the others cannot be convicted. Improvep Rir.te.—Mr. Varney, gun-smith, of this place, showed us yesterday an improved . ~ rifle, of his own invention, which he is now making. The barrel is about thirty inches in length, but bored only half the lergth, the other half being solid. The tube for the cap is attached to the under side of the barrel, and the cap is exploded by means ofa steel rod connecting the hammer with the lock. In several respects, this is an improvement upon the ordinary rifle, as sportrmen will readily understand by examining the one Mr. Varney is now making. He has made one of the same model, for Mr. Harvey, an experienced hunter, who is so pleased with it that he declares he will never again use uny other kind of a rifle. It is the intention of Mr. Varney to apply for a patent. Let orr Easy.—An individual, whose name we shall not mention in this connection, was arrested by Marshal Gregory, yesterday afternoon, fer getting drunk and making a brute of himself in the street. He was furnished with quarters in the town lock up over night, and brought before Justice Kendall for trial this morning. He set up no defense, but evidence in mitigation of the offense, was introduced, showing that he was an industrious miner, and that this was the first time he was ever known to be under the influence of liquor. In consequence of these representations, the Justice let him off with a nominal fine. Retic oF MAGENTA.—We were shown a day or two ago, a large Austrian sword, that was picked up on the battle field of Magenta by the Private Secretary of Louis Napoleon, and by him sent to Mr. Faucherie, the builder of the Magenta Flume, in this connty. It was brought here by one of the proprietors of the Flume, who has just returned from a visit to France. The sword was evidently intended for use, and doubtless did good service in the hands of some Austrian Hussar, who was probably killed in the battle. Fine ALARM.—There was an alarm of fire about eight o'clock yesterday evening, oceasioned by the burning out of a chimney in a, wooden building on the south side of Bread; street. The fire-bells were rung, the companies. brought out their machines, and an immense crowd soon collected on the street, but as rapidly dispersed after word was passed round that it was a false alarm. Fovnp.—A package, containing a daguerfeotype, a note for fourteen hundred dollars, and some other articles, supposed to belong to James Pledges, or Pledger, was picked up in the street yesterday. The package has been left ut this office, and the owner canm-have it by calling. THeateR.—Mr. C. B. Thorne, with a theSpecial Notices. Dr. Young takes this opportunity of observing that all letters are only opened and replied to by himself, and the latter as promptly as possible.
