MARCH.

On Southern bill-sides, melting bare,
O’er fields that motley colors wear,
That summons fills — air:

lids of Life awake,
Then from thy mountains, ribbed with snow,
Once more thy rousing bugle blow,
And East aad West, and to and fro,
Proclaim thy coming to the foe:

Say to the camp’s impatient hum,

Where Glory ’s victor-eagles poise
Above the proud, heroic boys

z.
Gorxe iro Batrie.—You have often
wondered whether the men wear their overcoats, knapsacks, bhaversacks, and carry
their blankets when going into battle. That
depends upon circumstances. Sometimes,
when they are marching, they find themselves in battle almost before they know it.
1 remember that on the 18th of July, three
days before the battle at Bull Ran, some
regiments of the army were marching towards Mitchell’s Ford, a fording place on
Bull Run, when suddenly the enemy fired
upon them, and the men had to fight jast as
psa were, po . a great many threw down
their coats and blankets and haversacks, so
that they could fight freely aod easily. You
also wonder whether the regiments fire regularly in volleys, or whether each man fires
as faet ashe can. That also depends upon
circumstances, but usually, except when the
enemy is near at hand, the regiments fire
only at the command of their officers. You
hear a drop, drop, drop, as a few of the
skirmishers fire, followed by a rattle and
roll, which sounds like the fall of a building, just as some of you have heard the
brick walls tumble at a great fire. Sometimes, when a body of the enemy’s cavalry
are sweepiug down upon a regiment to cut
it to pieces, the men form in a square, with
the officers and musicians io the center,
The front rank stands with bayonets charged, while the second rank fires as fast as it
cao. Sometimes they form in four ranks
deep, the two froot ones kneeling with their
bayonets charged, so that if the euemy
should come upon them, they would ruo
against a picket feace of bayouets. When
they form fn this way, the other two ranks
load and fire as fast as they can. Then the
roar is terrific, and many « borse and his
rider goes down before the iron hail.—

Caution to the Public.
Every intelligent and thinking person must know .
that remedies handed out for general ure should
. have their efficacy established by well tested experience in the hands of a regularly educated physi.
cian, whose preparatory study fits him for all the .
duties he must fulfill; yet the country is flooded with
poor nostrums and cure-alls, purporting to be the
best in the world, which are not only useless, but .
always injurious, The unfortunate should be PAR.
TICULAR in selecting his physician, as it is a lamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic .
tients are made miserable with ruined constitutions .
c mal-treatment frown i@experienced physicians in
general practice; for it is a point generally conceded
by the best syphilographers, that the study and management of these complaints should engross the whole
time of those who would be competent and successful
in their treatment and cure. The inexperienced gen. eral practitioner, having neither opportunity nor
time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with
their pathology, comonly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an indisciminate use of
that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mereury, .
. More caution, however, should be used by thesyph.
. ilitie patient, in cousulting nominal physicians of .
the advertising class, as nine-tenths of them are im.
posters, who assume German, Freuch, o1 other .
names, and are without avy claims to medical know!}

and, by means of their lying advertisements and pos.

Funk “institutions,” and unmercifully fleece them
and poison them with mercury. ersons living at a .
distance in the country are more apt to be duped by
the lying notices of quacks than citizens.
In view of the above facts, Dr. J.C, YOUNG
would say that he is the only regularly educated .
of five thousand cases have been disred in the year ending July Ist, 1860,
surpassing any hospital in the
