ad er id ‘that he was robbed, and ‘coepartnership. by. “imutialeonsent,’ NEVADA DEMOCRAT. Ww WEDNESDAY MORNING, -APRE,29, 1857. ¥ EYER] * Ln nGENG THEA a aameuedente successful eh adyement ‘at the Nevada Theater od Saturday night. The attendance has not been large, baé as a general thing ‘the bouses” have’ been fair, A succession of standard pieces have been presented, and the prificipal characters have been well sustained). Mreo Lesdernier will-compare favorably with the best actresses that have ap) aa peared upon our boards. Friday and Saturday . evenings were set apart for benefits— the former for. Mrs. Lesdernier, and the latter for Mr. Brown. We were pleased to see good houses: on beth occasions, Mr, Brown is a pleasing and popular actor, His immovable countenance is a serious fault, which can only be overcome by stndy and practice, but with proper care-and affention he would rank high in his profession. Mr. Moreland, for a young actor, has aéqiiitted himself ereditably. The theatre was closed»Monday and Tuesday evenings, but Mr. Potter, the manager, informs us it will be opened ‘again to-night, and that Mies Albertine will appear in some of her popular cBhracters. Tux Exrecrep Comet.—Considerable excitement is beginning to be manifested about town in relation to the comet which the European as. tronomers have predicted is going to come in contact with the earth on the 13th of next Jane. As dle day approaches we presume the excites . ment Will’ increase. One man says if he had a} note due the nextday, he would sell it for half . the face; ailother has concluded to give up his business ‘and enjoy himself for the few days the earth will be permitted to wag along. There is said to De one hope Jeft; if the astronomers have madé a mistake of a secoud in their calenJations, the comet, instead of occupying. the tdentieal spot with the earth, will be a million of miles off. Whenwe take inte cansideration the accuracy with which astronomers have heretofore caleulated the position of comets, must confess that this hope is slight indeed; many, however, cling to it, like a drowning . nn toa straw. People generally take the matt ter phil sophically. and say. “Let her rip.” ave ARitEST oF Ge ite -—Mr, Nugent, a patiee offi. err of San Francisco, arrested W allace Gehr, and brought him into town on Wednerday evening last, past in the vicinity of Stockton, and went to San Frane sco with the intention, it ix supposed of going to Niearagua. It willbe remembered indicted for robbing Alex. MeClanahan, some inouths ago, near Grass Valley, [In consequence of MeClanathat Gcrhr was and escaped jail. han’s death, now be convicted, ast prove that the robbery was commited. trial of Saedy On the rass, McClanahan swore positively that Gehr the men that rebbed him. The property also found upon his person when he was arrestad. o.) the trial. APFFRAY COMMERCIAL Strert.— dents of this usnally quiet street were thrown inte great excitement Monday afternoon by the ON report that.a bloody tragedy was being enacted . at the Nevada Restaurant. The neighbors, and . idlers on the street rushed furiously to the scene ‘ the disturlance, and to their surprise found the proprietors engaged in a bloody encounter, Weapons— decanters, pitebers, and other “bar fixtures,” Result of the fracus-—dissolution of ‘one very had-looking countenance, and a bloody shirt. The senior partner came ont second best, so Saya an eye witness,” ted about making a change in the sign. Oiry Eveerron, moecracy are going to have a clear field at the next city Cleetion. Geo, Gray and Ss. Venard To all appearances, the Dehave announced themselves as independent ean. <Udates for Marshal, but as no opposition ticket has been formed, draw. The Republicans doubtless wonld get up a ticket. but their strength is principally outside of the corporation. The “peoples” party . have not yet organized, Mrs, Lespernier, read selections from Longfellow’s Hiawatha, ecllancous pieces on Sunday evening, at the Court House. A good number were ance, and all were highly pleased with the entertainments. give readings in Forest city, Downieville and other mountain towns. Mrs, Lesdernier is an accomplished reader, preciated by our mountain friends. On her return she designs giving humorous readings in this place and Grass Valley. A GAMBLING Satoon has recently been opened on Commercial street. . The saloon is neatly fitted up, and a band of music attends during the evenings. Those wishing to invest money in an institution of this kind will find an excellent opportunity by stepping in most any evening. Insane.—Joln Meyers, who is now in jail on a charge of attempting to burn the town, is, or pretends to be, insane. It seems to be the impression generally that it is only pretense, but those who have charge of him ate of the opinion that he is really deranged. Tut Batpees.—The Main street bridge, and the bridge acioss Little Deer creck are now completed. The work on the Broad strect DHE Te promreMthg rapidly, ana it 46 the in. . tention of Mr. Back, the contractor, to have this one completed the latter part of this )week or the first of next, Dry WeATHER. —The gutdeas: orchards and ranches in this neighborhood are suffering very much by the drouth. A few bours’ rain would be of inestimable benefit to all kinds of vegetation. A Prperion was in ) civonlation yesterday and day before for the pardon of Henry Hay. We presume fiine-tenths of the citizens of this city will sign it. ~Covsty Busryess.—The Board of County Supervisors will meet to-morrow, at ten o’clock, for the transaction of county business.
