The history of ihe “Greek Fire” is interesting on several ,accounts. The fire was
invented in the seventh century, while the
human mind was lapsing into barbarism, It
saved the Eastera Empire repeatedly from
destruction, by burning ships and driving
back armies from before theapital. Amidot
a hundred revolutiona it remained a close
eecret io possession of the Government at
Constantinople, for four bundred years, after which a kaowledge of its preparation
passed over to the Mabommedans of Asia,
who used it with powerful effect upon ‘the
Western nations during the Crusade, Finally the iavention was lost, aud so continwed for several huudred years; and whether
the parties now institutiag ihe experiment
have reproduced the gevuine article, or
only a good imitation of it, is simply a.matter of conjecture.
We are indebted to Gibbon for our information concerning this destructive agent.
About the year 670 the Saracens sat down
before Constantinople their large naval expedition, having foand the Hellespont unguarded. The city appeared as if it would
fall an easy prey. Buta whole summer
spent in besieging it, only resulted in disaster to those fanatical children of the desert,
A disgraceful peace, to which the Caliph
assented in his dotage, was followed by 4
renewal of the war by bis successor, A
seco expedition, comprising, it is said,
eighteen hundred vessels, with one bundred
aud twenty thousand meu, appeared before
the place. Again the Grecian fire vessels
were launched against them; aud with such
terrible effect was this fire used, that the
immense fleet was nearly annihilated, Nor
were the land forces more successful when
brought to face the supposed supernatural
agent. After desperate exertions, prolouged to a period of thirteen months, the army
reccived orders to retire; and Constantino
ple was saved froin the sign of the crescent,
up to the middle of the fifteenth century.
Callinicus, a native of Heliopolis, in Syria
ot Egypt, is alledged to be the discoverer
of this great secret, He deserted from the
service of the Caliph to that of the Emperor, probably from religious motives, The
historian of the Decline and Fail suppores
that naptha, or liquid bitumen, was the
priocipal ingredient of the Greek fire. In
places this resinous substance is found to
epring from the earth, and catch fire on exposure to the atmosphere. With it were
mingled some other substances, probably
sulpbur and pitch or rosin, The compound
produced a thick smoke and loud explosion
accompanied by a fierce and obstinate flame
which burned in every direction, Sand, vinegar and urine were the only known remedies against its ravages, ‘It was poured
from ramparts in large bodies, or launched
in red hot balls of stone or iron, or
darted in arrows, or javalins, twisted round
with flax and tow, which had deeply imbibed the inflammable oil. Sometimes it
was deposited in fire ships, the victims and
instruments of a more ample revenge, and
wes most commonly blown thro’ long tubes
of copper, which were planted on the prow
ofa galley. and fareifully shaped into the

“Tt came flying through the air,’? says
Joinville, “like a winged, long-tailed dragon, about the thickness of a bogshead,

dispelled by this deadly illumination,”
hat a composition of this sort should be
kepta yrofound secret for ages, is surprising
—yet there can be no reasonable doubt regarding it. The Emperors would often euccor other nations with galleys and weapons
prepared with it; but the mystery of its
manufacture they would never impart,
Asking aesistance from foreigners, they
were inexorable in preserving a monopoly
of the art. Sometimes they would instruct
Embassadors to pretend that it had been
miraculously made known to the great Constantine, and the boon would be withdrawn
if communicated to others. By some means
it was preserved to the end of the eleventh
century, when at length it was discovered
or stolen by the Mahommedans, But it continued in use up tc the invention of guapowder. Considering that the Arabians had
made extensive researches in alchemy at an
early date in the history of their empire, it
seems the more strange that the constita-;
ents of the famous Greek fire should have
so long baffled every attempt to their discovery.

best in the world, which are not only useless, but
always injurious, The unfortunate should be ParTicuLak in selecting his physician, as it is a lamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic
patients are made miserable with ruined constitutions
by mal-treatment frova inexperienced physicians in
general practice; for it is a point generally conceded
ry the best syphilographers, that the study and man.
%rement of these complaints should engross the whole
time of those who would be competent and successful
in their treatment and cure, The inexperienced general practitioner, having neither opportunity nor .
time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with
their pathology, comonly pursues one system of treat:

that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mercury.
More caution, however, should be used by thesyph

and poison them with mercury, Persons living at a
distance in the country are more apt to be duped by
the lying notices of quacks than citizens.
