LOCAL MATTERS,
More Ropreutes.—The Smith family are
in a bad run of luck just at the present time.
In last Tuesday’s issue we chronicled the robbery of Mr. John Smith, of forty dollars, while
on his way from town to his place of residence
on American Hill.
ence, Mr. Smith remained in town last Sunday
until about half past ten at night, when he
started home with a twenty-dollar piece in his
pocket. This time, Mr. Smith admits, liquor
had a little advantage of him, While walking
leisurely and deviously along on Lost Hill, with
his hands in his pockets, he was suddenly stopped by two highwaymen, who presented their
pistols and demanded his money. Smith instantly jerked his hands from his pockets, at
he same time throwing the twenty-dollar piece
as far as he could, and one of the robbers
struck at him with a knife, cutting his pantaloons and grazing his leg. They then searched
him, and finding no money on his person, one
of them struck him a severe blow over the head
with a pistol, knocking him down, and left him
lying on the ground. Mr. Smith was engaged
most of the day yesterday, looking for his
twenty-dollar piece, but his search was unsuccessful.
Mr. Samuel Smith, the agent for the Gold
Run Ditch, was robbed the same evening. He
started for Gold Flat about nine o’clock, and
was stopped by three men about half a mile
from town, and robbed of thirty dollars in money and a silver watch. The robbers were
disguised, and presenting their pistols at Mr.
Smith, gave him ‘to understand their object
without speaking a word.
ANOTHER SERIEs OF LECTURES.—We understand that another course of lectures—for
which arrangements were partially made some.
time ago, but for the time suspended, as it was
ascertained that the Methodist Church would
begin a course about the same time—will commence in this place about the 20thof May. The
lectures will be under the direction of the Lecture Committee of the Baptist Church, and the
proceeds will go to assist in liquidating the debt
remaining on their new church edifice. We are
pleased to learn that the Baptist Church 1s now
in a comparatively flourishing condition. By
the first of June next every dollar of its indebtedness will be paid, excepting the sum borrowed
to assist in the erection of their church building. As the lectures for the Methodist Church
are advertised to close on the 16th of May, and
in order that the series may be concluded before the extreme hot weather of Summer, the
beginning of the course is fixed at about the .
20th of May or Ist of June.
Union MeetinG.—A paper has been circu.
lated in Nevada and vicinity, for a day or two
past, calling a Union meeting at the Theater
to-morrow evening. About five hundred sig.
natures have already been attached to the paper, and the Theater no doubt will be crowded.
‘There is no mistaking the public sentiment in
this county—it is for the Union, first, last, and
all the time, as the people will show by their
votes should a test ever be made.
THEATRICAL.—We have received a note
from the agent, stating that Mrs. Julia Dean
Hayne, supported by a talented company, will .
appear at the Nevada Theater on Tuesday evening, May 7th. Among the company are
Messrs. Frank Mayo, Pierpont Thayer, H. D.
Thompson, E. Thayer, and Mrs. Claughley,
Mrs. Frank Mayo, and Miss Alicia Mandeville.
The play of the “Hunchback” will be performed on the first evening.
Pronate Court.—In the Probate Court, .
yesterday, the will of Henry Schellhorn was admitted ;to probate, and letters testamentary with
the will annexed, issued to D. 8S. Tallman executor named in the will. In the matter of the
estate of John Davis, the executors appeared
under citation, filed their final report, and were
taxed costs of citation.
Burotary.—A burglar broke into the resiNot profiting by experi.
Mr. Tuomas’ Lectvne—The fourth’lec.
ture of the course, for the benefit of the Meth) odist Church, is announced to be delivered by
. the Rev. Mr. Thomas, on “Character,” next
Thairsday evening. Dr. Deal informs us that
. he has received a letter from Mr. Thomas which .
. renders it somewhat doubtful whether he can .
be here on the evening named; in case he
should not, Dr. Deal will deliver his lecture on .
. Poetry as a study,” asa substitute, and the
lecture of Mr. Thomas will be delivered on .
some future evening. Those holding tickets .
for the course will be admitted to all the lectures.
May Ba.i.—Mr. Bailey has made arrangements for a ball at his hotel on Broad street,
to-morrow evening, and ball-goersgenerally are
. anticipating an agreeable re-union. The services of those excellent musicians, Schmidt. schneider and Plumhoff, have been engaged for
the occasion.
MINSTRELS.—The Metropolitan Minstrels
are announced to give an entertainment at the
Theater this evening.
Special Notices.
Sand’s Sarsaparilla.—No remedial agent was
ever introduced that has proved so uniformly successful as this for purifying the blood, and for the
cure of scrofula, rheumatism, stubborn ulcers, salt
rheum, fever sores, erysipelas, pimples, boils, mercurial diseases, cutaneous eruptions, liver complaint,
bronchitis, consumption, female complaints, loss of
appetite, general debillty. Jt will speedily remove
the worst symptoms of these distressing complaints,
and in a brief period complete a radical cure.

Fine ALAnms.—There was an alarm of fire
on Sunday evening, caused by the burning out
of a chimney, in the brick building on Court
House Square. The fire companies turned out
promptly, and No. 2’s had their hose attached
to the hydrant on Pine street, but their services
were not needed.
AccIDENT.—A man whose name we could
not learn, fell from a log while crossing a ravine near Snow Point, on Sunday the 2ist,
breaking one of his arms and shoulder-blade.
He was taken to Snow Point, where he is under the treatment of Dr. Hardy and is doing very
well,
Henness Pass.—We learn that the road
over the Henness Pass route is now in excellent condition. A mule train started over from
Eureka, on Saturdiy, and sent back word that
the road was much better than they expected
to find it, the show being packed solid.

use, viz, :
Ist. They are equaily adapted to the amalgamation of Ores, either Wet or Dry crushed,
2d. Being Self-feeding and Self-diacharging, they
require but little attention; one man being sufficient
to attend thirty or more.
3d. During the process of amalgamation they
reduce the ore to an almost impalpable powder, in
close contact with a large surface of mercury, but
do not grind the mereury.
4th, Itis claimed for them, and demonstrated,
that they will save from 25 to 100 per cent. more
gold than any other amalgamator now in use,
The Amalgamating Dans are put in sets of ‘three,
discharging into each other; three of which setta
are capable of thoroughly amalgamating at least ten
tons of gold ore per day, and, with a slight addition,
. are equally adapted to the amalgamation of Silver
Ores by any of the old or new processes,
The Pans ave about four feet in diameter, and
supplied with a false, perforated, or grate bottom,
upon which the grinding is dune, which allows the
gold, as soon as united with the mercury, to séttle
beneath the grate, and, remain as safe as if under
lock and key,
In cleaning up the pans and separating the amal. gam but one-tenth of the usual labor is required,
. The parts most exposed to wear are made of hard
. iron, and easily replaced, at trifling cost.
All orders for these Amalgamators can be sent to
. PETER DONAHUE, on Frat street, San Frandisco, at
whose Foundry they can be seen in operation.
