The Indians on Nome Lackee Reeervation, have bad a glorious rabbit buat lately, having caught and killed during a few hours, handreds of these animals, The method adopted by the bunters is very simple. A number of nets are procured and stretched between stakes, which are planted in the ground similar to fence posts. A space about equal to the length of the net is left between each one, which is guarded by parties placed there for that parpose. Another party scours the brush, which frightens the rabbit and it immediately tries to escape. The first effort isto try aud get through the space, but itis met there by too much opposition, It then makes for the net in which it gets entangled, and before it can extricate itself it is dispatched with a club. A very singular proceeding, or rather a failure to proceed, on the part of the Coroner of Santa Clara county, is related by the San Jose Tribune. It appears that the body of a man was found floating in the slough near Alviso, and the Coroner was notified but declined acting in the premises, on the presumption that the law considers only such subjects as have been felonivusly killed, to be proper subjects for an inquest, whereas this man had in all probility fallen into the water while in a state of intoxication, A Justice of the Peace held an inquest upon the body and it was ascertained that the name of the deceased was Alexander Gardener, The cause of bis death was not found, A tragical affair occurred at San Jose, on Tuesday, Feb, 29th, growing out of the late murder of Paul C. Shore, The trial of Thomas Seal and Alex. Robb for the murder had commenced that day, 8, J. Crosby, a witness for Seal, and who was also implicated in the mur der, was shot and inslantly killed by Thomas Shore, a brother of the murdered man, Mr. L P. Ferguson was also killed by a stray bullet. . The testimony before the Cornorer’s jury, as to whether Crosby or Shore fired the first shot, is conflicting. Officer Blitz, says the S. F. Times, saved the lives of a lady and her child on Sunday, by springing at the bead of a runaway horse attached to a buggy, near the corner of Second and Market streets, and arresting bim in his} mad career. But for this gallant act, the lady and child must have been seriously injured or killed. The grateful lady offered ber preserver a handsome pecuniary reward but be refused it, satisfied with having preserved the lives of two fellow beings, The Marysville Democrat says that parties ia that city are setting on foot an enterprise which has for its object an immediate telegraphic connection between Marysville and Nevada, via Timbucktoo, Rough & Ready and Grass Valley. At present, electric commanication between the two places must be had all the way round by Sacramento, which is very inconvenient. There isno douyt that a line of this kind would pay largely. On the 25th ult., the body of John Mullen was found washed ashore, in front of Knight’s Ferry, on the Stanislaus river. Some time ago, he wandered off in a (it of delirium tremens, and it is supposed that while in that condition be jumped into the river, Ile caine from Philadelphia—where be has a brother residing—in 1850, or near that time, Louis Martigny, the Frenchman who jumped from the U.S. Court building, at San Francisco, some two months age, falling a distance of sixty feet, and landing upon a pile of rocks, . The Shasta Courier thinks that our Iegislators, instead of removing the capital, would act more wisely by removing themselves from it as soon as possible, ’ A man by the name of Nathan Moreler was robbed of $800 worth of jewelry, on board the Golden Age, on the late passage of that steamer from Panama to San Francisco, It is estimated that the production of wool, this year, in Tehama county alone will amount to 30,000 pounds, European News. Our dates from Liverpool are to Feb. 20th. The news is warlike, A rumor prevailed that Rnesia was concentrating troops on the frontiers of Moldavia; and it was asserted that in the event of a war with Italy, an army of 200,000 men will be posted in Russian Poland, Baron ge de Rothschild was returned as member of Parliament for Hythe, unopposed. Mr. Salomons had also been elected, A Paris correspondent says that peremptory orders had been given to the French chambers of commerce to abstain from giving expression to their ardent wishes for peace, The French army at Lyous bad been put on a war footing. The aoti-Austrian fulminations of the Paris press bad been discontinued, whereupon the *“rentes’’ rose; but the rise was not fully sustained. The king of Sardinia is determined on making an attempt to drive out the Austrians and making his kingdom strong enough to resist both that power and France, Hv contemplates uniting under bis rale Venice and at least twelve million subjects.
