NEVADA DEMOCRAT.
Quartz.—Mr. Soggs, of the American Hill
Quartz Mill, informs us that 260 tens of ‘rock
have been crushed at that mill during the
month of March, which yielded a trifie over
410 ounces of gold, valued at $17 25 an ounce.
For several months past this company have
erashed but little rock—haring been engaged
in sinking shafts and runniog tunnels, in order
to work their lead to better advantage. During the month of March the. mill was run but
little more than half the time, but they expect
soon to be able to get out rock enough to keep
the mill running constantly, Mr. Soggs informs us that their lead becomes heavier and
richer as they godown. They are now down
on the lead over two hundred feet, the rock averages about $28 aton, and the lead is four
feet in thickness. Near the surface, the lead
was not over a foot in thickness, and the rock
paid on an average about $20 a ton.
The theory of Sir Roderick Murchison, that
yes leads become poorer as they go down,
oes not hold good as far as leads have been
prospected in this section.
Unevatmen Estate.—Peter Ellison, who died
in Bridgeport township, Nevada county, in September 1856, left an estate valued at $792. Mr.
Joseph Thomas, a partner of Mr. Ellison, was
appointed administrator of the estate, and after paying the debts, and deducting the expanse
of administration,
$215 41, which is now deposited with the County Treasurer. No one knew where Mr. Ellison
was from, or whether he had any relatives living, and unless the estate is claimed the balance will escheat to the State. Mr. Thomas,
the administrator, has since died, but we are
informed that he had no knowledge as to where
Mr. Ellison was from. If he left any heirs, it is
proper that they should know the facts, so that
_ they cau claim the money. Exchanges please

Tur Roaps.—A bill parsed the State Senate
on Saturday last, designed to remedy the defects in the act recently passed concerning
roads in Nevada county. We presume the bill
authorizes the appointment of Road Tax Collectors for the present year, which could not
have been done without a supplementary act.
The people of Nevada county had about conéluded that they would escape the road tax for
this year altogether, but they are likely to be
disappointed.
Tue Girt Enxrertratnment.—We learn that
Charley Young has sold nearly all the tickets
for his grand gift entertainment, which comes
off on the 16th inst, As the tickets have been
sold so much more rapidly than was expected,
and ten days still intervening before the drawing, Mr. Young talks of getting up a supplemental list of prizes, to be drawn at the same
time.
Teamsten Rosaev.—A teamster, whoee name
we have not learned, was stopped last Sunday
morning. about four miles this side of Auburn,
on the Gold Hill road, by two bighwaymen,
who demanded his money. He gave up what
mouey he had—fifteen dollars—whieh the robbers took aad rode off, The robbers were oa
horseback.
City Exxcrion —The election for city officers
of Nevada will take place on Monday, the 2d
proximo. By a notice in another column, it
will be seen that a primary meeting has been
called, by the Democratic City Committee, for
Saturday week, to elect delegates to a City
Convention.
Posuic Scuoors.—Mr. J. A. Jennings and
Miss Lizzie C. Farrell have been appointed by
the District Trustees as teachers of the public
school. The school was opened on Monday
last, and it is expected that the school fund will
be sufficient to pay the salaries of the teachers
for six months.
Frurr Trees at Avcriox.—A_ large lot of
fruit trees will be soll at auction, at 2 o'clock
this afternoon, on the vacant lot above Gregory & Wickes’ store—I. Williamson, auctioneer,
The trees are in excellent condition, of the
choicest varieties, and consist of apple, pear,
peach, plum, quince, &c.
Tux WeaTuer continues unusually cold for
this season of the year, occasioned, as is supposee, by the large quantities of snow in the
mountains. Every morning the ground is covered with a light frost, and fears are entertained that the peach crop will be destroyed.
TeMPERANCE.—A meeting will be held at Temperance Hall, in this place, next Friday evening, for the purpose of organizing society of
Good Templars—The members of the society
to be composed of ladies and gentlemen. All
are invited to attend.
Baxxixa.—We call attention to the banking
advertisement of Messrs. J. C. Birdseye & Co.
This firm have made arrangements by which
they are enabled to draw checks direct on the
Metropolitan Bank, New York.
Excuances.—Mr. Mackie, the attentive agent
of Freeman & Co., bas placed us under obligations for the prompt delivery of California ex_ebanges. We are also indebted to Wells, Fargo
& Co. for similar favors.
Frorr Srore.—Nicolas Slocovich bas on band
a large variety of choice fruit, at his stand on
Pine street, opposite the U. S. Bakery. We
call attention to his advertisement in another
column.

WE are indebted to Master Stone, of the Pioneer Express, for copies of the Citizen and Hydraulic Press, of Saturday.

by the Pastor, on the Bisle in Public Schovls.

Tue Nicar Worksks+Very often as our
non-laboring citizens turn in their comfortable
beds at night, they hear the dull sound and feel
the vibration of a subterranean Titgaion, It
is the tunneler at bis work, piercing the hard
granite with drill and blast, -The rock drips
with humidity, and the yellow flame of bis candle can scarcely subsist in the close and noisome atmosphere. Grim, and wet, and pale the
tunneler works away through the gloom, night
after night for months, and even years. Sometimes his task is brought toa jen conclusion
by a premature explosion, and be is a maimed
creature for life, unless the Kinder fate of instant death b:falls him. If not maimed or killed his severe toil may result in disappointment;
or if fortunate, success may be robbed of its
pleasures by the physical ills of a broken constitution. Think of all this, ye comfortable
ones when you tarn in your drowsy beds and
bear the tunneler’s thunder; think of this, and
