JOSEPH BROTHERS,
Ran WAR
CHINN & COLBY,
LAMENT OF THE FLEA.
Long years have I wandered unfettered and free,
And bitten the young and the old,
And taid in the couch of the rich aud the poor,
And frightened the warrior bold.
But power is waning fast from me—
A Powder Magnetic and strong,
Invented by Lyon: is death to our tribe,
And away I must travel ere long.

ASSESSMENT ROLL For 1862.—The Board .
of Equalization have been engaged yesterday
and to-day in looking over the Assessment
Roll for this year—making corrections, listen.
ing to objections, ete, The list will not be footed
up for some weeks, but we should judge, from
. THE OPPOSITION STORE,
. Cor.of Broad & Pine Streets,
Degener’s,
a rough comparison, that the Roll this year
will show a considerable increase in taxable
property, as compared with 1861. The in.
crease in Nevada township is nearly $200,000; .
and there is also a considerable increase in
Grass Valley, Little York, and one or two oth.
er townships. Bridgeport, we believe, has
about held its own, and there is a decrease of a
few thousand dollars in Rough & Ready. ‘Lhe
total valuation of the county, including the
supplemental roll, yet to be made out will come
up to about four and a half millions of dollars.
By following strictly the law, and requiring
people to give in a list of their propeaty under
oath,a considerable amount of “cash on hand,” . Abel Drake's Wife—by John Saunders:
“tmoney secured by note,” ete., much of which
has heretofore escaped taxation, has been as.
sessed this year.
Tut CapEts.—The Nevada Cadets, thirsting
for military glory, and desirous of serving their
country in the present national crisis, wrote to
Gen. Wright, a week or so ago, tendering their
services as volunteers. They received in reply
a letter from Lieut. Col. T. C. English, of the .
First Infantry Washington Territory Volunteers, stating that that regiment lacked three .
companies of being full, and that if they would
apply soon, with a full company of eighty-five
good men they would be accepted. The officers
were to be subjected to an examination as to
their loyalty and military knowledge, and the
regiment, as its name indicates, is designed for
service in Washington Territory. The boys are
endeavoring to fill up the company to the required number,
Rewarp.—The Town Trustees have auth.
orized the City Marshal to offer a reward of .
one dollar each for every unlicensed dog found
running at large in the streets, after the 20th .
inst. The dogs are to be impounded for three
days, and the unfortunate ones not called . for in that time will be otherwise disposed of.
The Marshal’s notice appears in another column.
THe Mivir1a.—The Assessor has been engaged fora day or two past, in making outa
list of all persons in the county liable to mili.
tary duty, in accordance with the statute. The
list is not yet completed, but Mr. McKee .
informs us that ther are between 4,000 and
5,000 in the county. The number in Nevada
townshipis 833.
Fire ALAkM.—Some boxes in the rear of
Carley & Hall’s saloon, on Commercial street, .
were discovered to be on fire about half past .
two o’clock this afternoon. An alarm was .
raised, and the fire companies wer promptly
out; but the fire was extinguished before the
firemen reached the place. Itis not known
how the fire caught.
THEATRICAL.—The Comedy Troupe that .
have been playing at the Nevada Theater for .
the past week, purpose making a trip to Washington township this week. They are announced to play at Omega on Thursday and Friday,
and at Washington on Saturday evening.
Justices.—Messrs. John Kendall and E. .
W. Smith, the present incumbents, and W. P.
Harrington, are announced as candidates for .
the office of Justice of the peace for this township, at the coming election.
PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONVENTION.—The
proceedings of the Union Democratic Conven.
tion, of Saturday last, are published in full on
the fourth page of this paper. .
Batu.—Mr. and Mrs. Todd have issued in.
vitation tickets for a ball, to come off at the .
new Hall, at Relief Hill, on Friday evening, .
August 29th.
BacHELon’s Party.—The Bachelor’s Club
give a dancing party at Withington’s Hall, this .
evening.
SSAC A RN
Ovr Enemies ABROAD,—The temper of
the British journals towards the Federal Gov.
ernment andthe North does not, like old wine,
improve with age. They display the most malignant and bitter hostility. The London Morning Herald, the organ of the aristocrats, speaks
of the Union as a nuisance to the world, which
ought to be abated; and of the war for its preservation as the devil’s work, and hence ex.
presses the conviction that ‘the sooner it is)
played out the better.” McClellan, it thinks,
wil be unable to makea stand before Richmond, and should he sustain a reverse, we are
told it will be the ruin, not only of his army,
but of the Federal Government also. The late .
battles have signally disproved this arrogant
and insulting tirade of abuse. The secession .
emissaries in Eurcpe are busily at work to obtain intervention, and as their last resource .
they have promised France that the South .
would rather become its colony and abolish .
slavery after a certain decade rather than be .
restored to the embrance of the old Union and .
the nationality of Americans, They have fal-. i
len so low that they offer now to sell their .
birthright of freedom and become the subjects .
ef Napoleon, rather than again come into the .
federation of States, with their State rights unimpaired and institutions protected.—[N. Y.
