z i if i Mi FF : i eH Fetit : ; : 7; ges HY n = af a i A § Ft Such, Land of Song! art thou to me; From « Northland bleak and cold Inend my barque, and its freight shall be All blessed hopes, and the melody That minstrel lips have told. O1 beautiful land, with thy golden strand, Shining for evermore— I shall yet regain thy shore ! "at tb Golden Gate Like an aneho red barque, my soul shall wait. NOON AND MORNING. There are gains in all our losses, There are balms for all our pain ; But when youth, the dream departs, It takes something from our hearts, And it never comes again . We are strenger, and are better, Under manhood’s sterner reign ; Still we feel that something a» eet Followed youth with flying feot, And will never come again . Bomething beautiful is vanished, And we sigh for it in vain, We behold it everywhere, On the earth and in the air— But it never comes again . ee Exrraorpinary Case.—The New York Evening Post of July 16th, relates the following case: Qn the Lith July, a boy named Wm. Chalmers, 14 years of age, residing at No. 230 West Thirty-Third street, was fatally injured by a sorereing circular saw, in the workshop of Mr. Dubois, in Thirteenth street, near Tenth avenue while in the act of clearing away the saw dust from beneath the saw, The saw entered hia skull about four inches posterior to the margin of the ear, traversing the skull forward to the roote of the nose, penetrating the brain toa depth of about two anda half inches. The probe of ite weight dropped into the substance of the brain more thao two inches. When bronght to the New York Hospital, aod from the time the accident occurred up to the 14th, he suffered no pain, and was very cheerful, speaking lightly of the injuries he had received. On Saturday morning the disorganized substance of the brain, mingled with indammator product, began to protrude through the wound, and paralysis of the left arm supervened about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Until this time the deceared made no complaint; his intellect appeared to be perfectly clear, conversing freely with bie attendants, But inflamation having setin, it was evident that death must shortly ensue, He lingered until yesterday morning, (15th July,) when he died. Dr, Tutbill, who bad the case in charge, says that it is the most remarkable case of longevity he ever witnessed. The medical faculty at the Hospital were very desirous to buld « post mortem examination, but say they were denied the privilege by the coroner and the relatives of deceased. Lange Lrsrarizs,—The largest library in the world, is that of the British Museum, and.contains 40 miles of shelves. The Imperial Library of St. Petersburg stands next {a size, and contains about 580,000 volumes. The Imperial Library of Vienna, probably contains somewhat under 400,000 volumes, including MSS. The Royal Library of Berlin, about half a million; Munich, somewhat fewer; Copenhagen, about 400,000; Breslau, 350,000; Dresden, $00,000; the University Library at Gottingen 360,000. The famous library of the Vatican, is less remarkable for the number of its volumes, tban for the value of its MSS., and the inaccessibility of itstreasures. The number of printed books is variously estimated at between 300,000 and 500,000! The former, however, is considered nearer the truth, The value of the manuccript collection, believed to number about 25,000, cannot be over estimated. The books are kept in closed cases, and there is no oatalogue—two causes of the mystery which surrounds collection. The princ = llery of the library ie about a thousand feet in length. Warre Wives Among Tae Inptans.—The Chatfield Spey . Democrat eays that two white women are living at the Agencies, near that lace, with Indian husbands. One of them, Kirs Renville, came from Illinois about eighteen months ago, and, after a vigorous courte ship, won the consent of ber dusky mate, and married him that she might elevate the race. She is now Henching the Indian girls to bake and sew, and tc do household labor generally, and her husband is said to be quite proud of her. The other, Mre, Oberday, me enamored of one of the braves at Washington, where he had gone with othersof his tribe te complete a treaty, and she followed him to bie home on the prairie. _~-Tas Cost.—The city government of New York appropriated $30,000 for the reception of the Japanese. Bills for their entertainment came in to the amount of $125,000. The Mesars. Leland, of the Metropolitan Hotel, charged the modest sum of $137 sg day for each guest, making their whole claim $91,000. Pretty good for two weeks’ board for seventy Japanese, who, when at home, live chiefly on rice, ata cost of less than a dime a day! Among the items are 10,000 bottles of champagne. One would suppose that the Japs not enly drank, bat took a daily ewim in the sparkling fluid. Ancient. Eoyrr.—The reckless prodigality with which, in ancient Egypt, the upper classes squandered away the labor and ives of the fe perfectly startling, In this respect, monuments yet remaining abundant! ve, they stand alone and without a riva e may form some idea of the almost incredible waste, when we hear that two thousand men thi i ing a single cowtsfrons Mlephantize to Bale; thot ten entet of the Red Sea alone, cost the lives of one hunseater athe Freie ant of three hundred and sixty Ee abe men for weeka they had revalue of nearwork on ber, FOURTE Gift Entertainment! — oO Fr— CHAS.
