nnn aaa Aevada Democrat. LOCAL MATTERS, Brastine ACcCIDBNtT.—Messrs, J.S. Ernes . and Wm. C, Asher were dangerously injured . yesterday forenoon, at Wall’s bridge, by the . premature explosion of a blast. They were blasting out a rock on this side of the bridge, in order to straighten the road, and the powder ignited while they were tamping it with a cop. per rod. They were both knocked insensible, . and Ernest was thrown nearly across the road, . a distance of fifteen or twenty fect, and in struggling rolled off the embankment. Asher soon came to his senses, and finding that the powder . had set his clothing on fire, started for the rive . erto put it out, when he saw Ernest rolling . down the hill, his dog having hold of his cloth. ing endeavoring to stop him. He fixed Ernest in a position so that he would roll no further, . and continued on to the river and put out his burning clothing, when he again became insen. sible. They remained there perhaps half an hour, when they were discovered and taken to . the toll-house, and intelligence of the accident . sent totown. Drs. H. Hunt, Bates and Deal . went out and dressed the wounds of the injuredmen. They were both badly hurt, and their condition is considered critical. Ernest received a severe cut over the right eye, his left arm and shoulder and right side were badly mangled, and his jaw-bone broken. He was insensible all day yesterday, but appeared to be in. his right mind this morning. Asher was hold. ing the tamping rod at the time of the accident, and his left hand was so badly mangled that oue of his fingers was amputated and it is thought he will lose another. He was also hurt in the side, and was severely burned by . clothing taking fire. His injuries were not con. sidered dangerous yesterday, but we learn he . was much worse this moning. Sheets, about five miles below Grass Valley, were set on fire about . daylight yesterday morning, and consumed. The damage is about $1,500. The fire was undloubtedly the work of an incenciary, as there . had been no fire near the barns, and nothing inside of them that could have produced spontaneous combustion. Tue Breckinridge County Convention met at the Court House at one o’clock this after. noon, and adopted a resolution declaring it inexpedient to nominate a county ticket this year, . and advising their party to vote for the Union Democratic county nominees.
