OUR RIVER. . ee FOR A PROTIVAL AT “THE LAURELS’’ ON THE MERRIMAC, Oneé more on yonder ladrelled height The summer flowers have budded ; om met with summer’s golden light 6 vales at home are flooded; And once more, by the grace of Him Of every good the Giver, We sing upon its wooded rim The praises of our river, Its pines above, its waves below, The west wind down it blowing, As faiv as when the young Brissot Beheld it seaward flow 7 And bore its memory o’er the deep Yo soothe a martyr’s sadness, And frescoe, in his troubled sleep, His prison walls with gladness. We know the world is rich with streams Renowned in song and story, Whose music murmurs through our dreams Of human love and glory: We know that Arno's oth be are fair, And Rhine has castled shadows, And, poet tuned, the Doon and Ayr Go singing down their meadows, But while, unpictured and ansung By painter or by poet, Our river waits the tuneful tongue And cunning hand to show it— We only know the fond skies lean Above it, warm with blessing, And the sweet soul of our Undine Awakes to our caressing. No fickle Sun-god holds the flocks That graze its shores in keeping; No iey of Dian 1 s The youth beside it sleeping: Our Christian river loveth most The beautiful and buman; The heathen streams of Nuiads boast, But ours of man and woman, The miner in his cabin heara The ripple we are hearing; It whispers soft to homesi-k ears Around the settler’s clearing; In Sacramento’s vale of corn, Or Santee’s bloom of cotton, Our river by its valley born Was never yet forgotten. The drum rolls loud—the bugle fills The summer air with clangor; The war storm shakes the solid hills Beneath its tread of anger; Young eyes that last year smiled in ours Now point the rifle’s barrel, And hands then stained with fruit and flowers Bear redder stains of quarrel. But blue skies smile, and flowers bloom on, And rivers stil keep flowing, The dear God still his rain and sun On good and ill bestowing. His ig trees whisper, ‘Trust and wait!” His flowers are prophesying That all we dread of change or fate His love is underlying. And thou, O mountain-boral—no more We ask the Wise Allotter Than for the firmness of thy shore, The calmness of thy water, The cheerful lights that overlay Thy rugged slopes and beauty, To match our spirits to our day, And make a joy of duty. —~{John'G, Whittier, Tue Wuite Canox,—In the days of old, long before the deep solitudes of the west was disturbed by white meo, it was the cut tom of Indian warriors of tbe forest to ax semble at the Great Cataract and offer a humat sacrifice to the Spirit of tbe Falls, The offering cousisted of a white canoe fall of ripe fruits and blooming flowers, which was paddled over the cliff by the fairest girl of the tribe who had just arrived at the age of womantood, Is was counted an bonor by the tribe to whose lot it fell to make the sacrifice ; and even the doomed maiden deemed ita bigh compliment to be selected to guide the white canoe over the fails The only daughter of achief of the Seneca Indians was once chosen as a sacrifleed offering to the Spirit of Niagara. Her mother had been slaia by a hostile tribe. Her father was the bravest among his warriors, and when the lot fell to bis fair child, no symptons of feeling crossed bis mind. At length the day arrived ; it faded into night as the savage festivities and rejoicing procveded ; then the moon arose and silvered the cloud of mist that rose above the turmoil of Niagara; and now the white canoe, laden with its precious freight, ‘glided from the bank and swept out into the dread rapid from which escape was hopeless. The young girl calmly steered ber tiny bark towards the center of the stream, while frautic yells and shouts arose from the sboree, Suddenly another canoe shot forth upon the stream, and, ander the powerfal impulse of the Seneca chief, flew like an arrow to destruction, It overtook the first ; the eyes of the father and child met in one last gaze of love, and then they planged together over the thandering cataract. ee ee Dirrico.tiss.—Wait not for your difficalties to cease ; there is no soldier’s glory to be won on peaceful fields, no sailor’s daring to be won on sanny seas, no trast of friendship to be proved when all goes well, Faith, patience, heroic love, devout courane and gentleness, are not to be formed when there are no donbts, no paloeg, no irritations, no difficulties, A yYoune lady, fond of the pomps and vanities of the world, had a beautiful set of jewelry. She became “converted.” In relating ber experience, ehe said, “When I had foand the Lord, I was convinced that if I continued to wear the jewelry I shonid go to bell; and so I took it alloffand gave it to my sister.’ Tas Durances.—Alexandria is six miles south of Arlington Heights ; Fairfax Court Houee ia fourteen miles west of Alexandia ; Centreville is seven miles west of Fairfax, and Manassas Gap Junction is seven miles weet of ‘and the Junetion. . y .
