The distarbance about negro labor is the
grossest sort of Know-Nothingism, and utterly at war with every sound Democratic
principle, and the self-respect of the white
race. There is no meanness comparable
with that which would deny to any man
white or black, the right to work for bis
living. The prejudice that would deny tbe
black man the opportunity to earn his bread
disgraces human tature. It did not orig:
inate with working men, and will never be
entertained by them; but demagogues of
the basest order are responsible for its parentage, Whatever reasons exist for op.
sition to the encouragement of negro emgration to Obio, the fact that at least s0me
of those who come among us will work. is
assuredly not one of them,
Destruction By Earraquares,—In the
Dutch territories on the west coast of Sumatra, and in the islands lying off it, earthquakes of excessive strength took place in
February and March, accompanied by violent commotions in the sea, the waters retiring to a great distance, and then rushing
back with frightful foree, eweeping every
thing before them, Great destruction was
everywhere caused, aod many lives lost. In
the islands, however, the effect of these terrible natural phenomena were most marked. On the island of Nia a military post
was completely swept away by the sea, aod
several of the garrison destroyed. A gunboat lying in the harbor was torn from her
anchors and thrown high upon the shore.
On the island of Sime almost the whole of
the houses were destroyed, and out of a
population of about 1,100 nearly 800 perished. Unusually heavy rains also prevailed
in other dependencies, In Banda the nut
meg crops suffered much from this canse.
A fearful eruption of the volcano on the inland of Makijau, about thirty-five Eogliah
miles from Ternate, bad caused the joss of
many hundred of lives, and destroyed the
whole vegetation. This took place on the
30th of December.
