cnn re en onan Misce WHEELER & WILSON’S eous. It seems to have vceurred to few persons ia this country that the javention or adoption of iron-clad and shot-proof ships of war must work a great change in the nature of harbor defenses, We have been accustomed to think that the city of New York quite safe against the assaults of an enemy ing from the sea ; but there is little doubt that such a ship as the French La Gloire or the British Warrior could sail ap between the forts which guard that baroor uniojared by their fire, and, arriving safely off the Battery, bombard the city at its leisure, moving point to point till the island was a mass of ruins. And if New 1 then probably any other city on our c The Secretary of the Navy is about to contract for a number of wouden gunbuats, If he would add to our naval force a few sbot-proof iron ganboats, such as efficienty served the Emperor of France in the Cri iaea, they would be found a very useful slase of vessels for several purposes io this war. One such shot-proof guuboat stationdat each of the mouths of the Mississippi, oe better yet, two stationed opposite Fort Jackson, where the river is still undivided, would hermetically seal the port of New Orleans, and do more efficient service at less current expeuse than balf-a-dozen steam frigates outside. on Again, there is little doubt that any seaport now held by the rebels—even Charleston—could be easily captured, or at least destroyed, by one or two shot-proof vessels, armed with sufficieatly heavy guns and able to throw sbell and bot ehot. A Freoch shot‘proof gunbvat withstood the heavy cannonade of a jevge Russian fort for more than two hours, without the slightest injury, io the Crimea. Shell, bot shot and the heaviest cold shot, were alike harmless to her iron sides ; and she kept up a constant Gre, without the loss of a man or the smallest injury to bull or armament. ‘ A vast leviathan like the Warrior requires many mouths to build. But a very efficient clases of shot-proof iron gunboats, large enough for all practical purposes, could be constructed in this country in about 100 ‘days. Half adozen euch vessels would be & formidable and serviceable permanent addition to our navy. They would serve an excellent purpose during the present war for the, Union; aud as iron does not rot iike wood, they would do good work for many years to come on any station where “we need strong vessels to repel an attack, as well as answer, admirably as moveable harbor defenses for any sudden emergency.—[N.
