LOCAL MATTERS, _
Fing.—The effectiveness of the Fire Department of Nevada, was put to the test on yesterday morning. A fire broke out inthe residence
of Mr. Jas. Irwin on Deer Creek, between
Broatl and Spring streets, in the rear of Withington’s paint shop, at 8 o'clock, a. M., and the
slarm being sounded the Department turned
out with all the promptitude of old firemen.
The Hook and Ladder company was first upon
the ground quickly followed by Pennsylvania
No. 2, who took the hydrant on Broad street,
opposite Helm’s stable, and No. 1 taking the
hydrant on Main street near the bridge. No, 2
got a splendid stream on, which deadened the
dames at the first dash ; and with the assistance
of No. 1, kept the fire in check and prevented
it from spreading to the combustible buildings
which surrounded it on all sides. The Hooks
eral out-buildings on a line with the fire. Ina
very short time after the alarm was given the
tire was under subjection, and our citizens have
to thank the Fire Department for the safety of
their city to-day. As the fire progressed the
wind set in from the south-east, towards Helm’s
and Lancaster’s stables, and without the Department and the water, the doom of the city
would have been inevitable. An old San Francisco fireman who was present and assisted at
she fire, informed us that our firemen worked
nobly as could have beenexpected. At the out.
set of the fire the hose of No. 1 burst, but that
defect was quickly remedied. The watch and
aome money belonging to Mr. Irwin, which was
placed under a carpet for safety by his wife,
was recovered without loss or damage. This
was the first fire of any moment the Department have had to contend with since their orgariization ; and their Chief, Fisher, and Assistant, Williams, were not found wanting in ability and judgment.
GrRaND LAaRcENY.—A warrant was issued
on the 19th inst., by the County Judge, on the
affidavit of M. T. Farmer, for the arrest of Dr.
¥. Hiller, J. Nelson, B. Brockmeyer, A. Fifer,
John Holtsclaugh, and Albert Hillerscheidt,
charged with grand larceny, in cleaning up the
tluice-boxes, and carrying off the gold, in the
taims of the Virginia Co., near Humbug. The
defendants, with the exception of Brockmeyer,
were arrested and examined before Judge Bel. september next.
den this forenoon. From the evidence, it ap.
pears that the claims are owned by the defendants, but the diggings, together with the
gold and amalgam in the boxes, were attached
on Saturday last by the Sheriff, on an execution against Hiller. Constable Bickford was
placed in charge, and during the afternoon the
defendants cleaned up some of the lower boxes,
taking therefrom about five dollars. In the evening, however, while the Constable was absent,
the remaining boxes were cleaned up, and the
next day Dr. Hiller sold three hundred dollars
worth of gold, which was supposed to have been
taken from the diggings. The Court held Dr.
Hiller and A. Fifer to bail in the sum of $500
each, to answer tothe charge of larceny, they
veing the onty ones of the defendants whom it
was shown kad notice of the levy, and took
part in cleaning up the boxes.
Marin Street PiaNk1No.—The Transcript
ef this morning favers the community with
another essay on the subject of re-planking
lower Main strect. It announces that the
bridge has already been re-planked ; that Marshal Gregory is now superintending the replanking of the street; gratuitously intimates
that the Board of Trustees are disposed to ignore the fact that there is such a place as lower
Main street, but says the forsaken locality will
be repaired without any appeal to that municipal body. We venture that there will be an
appeal to the Trustees, as soon as the Marshal
can corral a quorum, to pay for repairing the
bridge, a portion of the cost of which will have
to be paid by the Piety Hill folks; and as to
the repair of the street, it is no more a hardship
for the property holders to do it voluntarily,
shan to do it under a compulsory ordinance.

Wasnor Stace Line.-Messrs. J. K. Sale
& Co. have established a line of stages between
this place and Virginia City, via the Henness
Pass. On and after Monday next, the 26th
inst. stages will leave each place every Monday
and Thursday morning. The fare has been
fixed at twenty dollars. This is what we have
needed for a tong time, and now that the road
is completed, we trust it will be kept open and
the stages kept running from this time on, and
from the well-known energy of the proprietors
we have no doubt that everything in their power
will be done to accomplish this result, The
travel at present is sufficient to sustain a semiweekly line, and we have no doubt that in a few
weeks they will be compelled to start daily in
order to accommodate those going to and returning from Silverdom.
SPEAKING aT Rep DoG.—We have received
anote from Mr. Hawley, who is now in Eureka
township, stating that he will address the citizens at Red Dog next Saturday evening, on the
political issues of the day. Messrs. Caldwell
and Dunn are already announced to speak at
Red Dog on the same evening.
FeMaLk Secessionists iN WasuIncton.—
The Caarleston Mercury, of a late date,
contains the following paragraph :
The women in Wasbiugton, it is said, are
almost ail Secessiouists, and ia private circles among the permanent residents of
Washingtou and Georgetown, hatred to the
existing government and sympathy with
Jeff Davis are treely expressed feelings.
The wife of a well known Senator, though
uot the representative of a Slave or Secessiou State, makes her house the rendezvous
of rebels.
