Aevada Democrat, LOCAL MATTERS, _ Distxrot Count —Aug. 30th.—In the cases . J. H. Clark, J. B. Johnson, and Wm. Clement, . applicants for the benefit of the insolvent law, the Sheriff was appointed assignee. H. Williams vs, His Creditors.—Decree made discharging applicant from his debts and liabilities. . Gregory & Boring vs. Meecham.—J udgment ordered as prayed for in complaint—plaintiff’s . attorney to prepare and submit decree. Hickey vs. Fox & Merryman.—Demurrer to complaint submitted and overruled, and defen. dants’ attorney given one week to answer com: . plaint. J.G. Kapp, a native of Wirtemburg, hav. ing presented the necessary proofs, was granted final papers of naturalization. The trial of Birkbeck, indicted for murder, was set for Wednesday, October Ist. Tue STEREOSCOME.—The rush to the Theater to see the great London Stereoscome exhibition continues unabated. Last evening, notwithstanding the Circus was in town, the Theater was packed full, anda large number were compelled to leave, being unable to find standing room. Our readers will bear in mind that the Stereoscome will be exhibited this evening for the last time in Nevada, and if there are any inthe community who have not yet seen these splendid paintings, they should by all means improve this opportunity. As an additional inducement, a large number of pres . sents, many of them valuable, will be given out to the holders of the lucky numbers, among the audience. Morrison is the only man who can successfully compete with a circus. Some 750 persons attended his exhibition last night, while . there were only about 200 in the circus, and many attended the latter because they were unable to get into the Theater. Lecture Sunpay Evextnc.—Capt. Murphy, formerly of Col. Mulligan’s regiment, ar. rived in Nevada on Friday last, and has made . arrangements to deliver a lecture at the Thea. ter next Sunday evening, on the “Siege of Lexington.” It will be remembered that Col, Mulligan, after holding out for several days, against the army of Price, was at length com. pelled to surrender to overwhelming numbers. . A detailed account of that desperate struggle, . by a member of Mulligan’s heroic band, cannot . fail to be interesting to a California audience. . Capt. Murphy was also with McClellan’s army, during a portion of the six days’ fighting before Richmond, and_ will give his views upon vari. ous matters of interest connected with the war. His lecture at Sacramento, Folsom, Oroville, Timbuctoo, and other places, was received with . great favor. Count House Roor.—The proposals for putting a shingle roof onthe Court House were opened by the Supervisors, yesterday. Three bids were put in, as follows; Q. Rice, $780; Kent & Mackay, $600; Black & Hughes $550. The contract was awarded to Black & . Hughes, but an additionalitem, not stated in. the original specifications, brings up the cost to . within ten dollars of the bid of Kent & MacKay. ADVERTISING.—The slim attendance at the “Great World Show,” last evening demon-, strates the absurdity of attempting to run an institution of that character without properly advertising their exhibition in the local papers. When the proprietor of this circus visits Nevada again he will doubtless pay those whose business it is to advertise his performance. Wn. A. Lamps, for a long time a resident . of Nevada, has become connected as a partner in the house of A. Grimm & Co., of San Francisco, wholesale dealers in liquors, wines, etc. We wish him suecess in his new field of enterprise. The card of the firm will be found in. another column. JeweLny at Avction.—M. Liebert will . dispose of the remainder of his stock of jewelry, at the Hook & Ladder Co’s. house, this evening. Many valuable articles will be sold, . which can doubtless be purchased at a bargain. GaRkIBaLDI' 8S MoveMbats.—Among the late items of Huropean news, we have the following from Italy: Garibaldi had quitted Castro Giovanno, and arrived at Polizza, with about 3,000 volunteers. Politicians believe, notwithstanding appearan. ces, that there is, at the bottom, a complete ace cord between Garibaldi and Victor Emanuel, Ricasoli, it is said, forces Garibaldi to advance to Rome. Austria is taking strong precautionary measures in Venetia. Reports from the . French squadron employed watching Garibal. di’s movements state that they are actively at work. ‘The decks of the vessels are constantly . cleared and ready for action. i Covutpn’t Scpport It.—A chap in Virgin ia was taken prisoner by the rebels, who demanded that he should take an oath to support the Confederate Government. The fellow said he had taken a great many big oaths in his day, but he could not even support his own family, and to swear to support the Confederate Government was taller swearing than he dare do. Tue Union Democrats of Alemada have nominated for Assembly Malachi Fallon and _ Augustus Johnson. The same party in Santa . Barbara haye nominated Ramon Hill. . Monitorial reflections: . and rivers with their fleets, so far as the Con. Gen, Sigel had shot Gen. McDowell in the . at the ensuing election. Jouy BULL Faraurexepy <I appears that . our English friends are becoming somewhat . alarmed at the rapidity with which the, American Government is constructing an efficient iron clad wavy. It has been well Said, thatthe Cumberland did vot sink . alone, bat dragged down with her all the wooden navies of the world’ and in the work of reconstruction the United States is likely to hold its owa even with England, The London Herald. an organ of the English aristocracy, aud a rabid advocate of . the cause of the Secessioniste, has these What does the development of the naval element in America mean? Is it against the Confederates that it is directed? Is it in order to . crush their actual enemies that every arsenal . in the Federal States shows signs of unwonted activity? This certainly is not the case, as since . the disastrous fate of the Merrimac the Wash. ington Government is able to sweep the seas federates, whose strength lies in their land fore . ccs, are concerned. Then if the object of these extensive naval preperations cannot be the enemy now in the field, we must infer that there are ulterior considerations—that there is a design to strengthen the American navy as against old established marines; in other words to maintain a fleet which may successfully cope . with the ships of France, Russia or England. Great Britain, however, is more immediately pointed at in this project, as it seems to be almost a traditionary policy on the part of American politicians to cultivate friendly relations with the empires of France and Russia, while . England is treated by them with coolness or . contumely, even though they dare not proceed to overt violence. . A RUMOR was Lelegraphed across the continenta day or two ago, to the effect that) head, at the battle of Warrenton, No particulars were given, but it was intimated that McDowell had proved treacherous, . Later dispatches, though they make no mention of the rumor, sbow it to bave been a pure fabrication. 0 Sp Justice of the Peace.—(h0, 8.8.
