LOCAL MATTERS, re
Qcick Trir.—We learn that Sale & Co’s
stage, Which left Virginia City at six o’clock on
Thursdgg morning, arrived at Nevada at six
o'clock yesterday etening—traveling only in the
day tive. It brought three passengers, Messrs.
Williamson, Battaile, and W. A. Gray. The
road is now in fine condition, the worst portion
of it being the old traveled route between Nevada and Eureka. With stations for changing
teams at proper distances, the trip between
Virginia City and Nevada can easily be made
in twenty hours.
MaINn Street BrrpGe—We would suggest to the Town Trustees, if they have not already paid for the planking of Main street .
bridge, to examine it before doing so. We have .
been informed by a gentleman who saw the
planks laid down, that half of them were more .
or less rotted, and will not last a month.
NEWSPAPER Favors.—We are indebted to
Jno. Pattison, of Langton’s Express ; to Stratman & Co., news dealers, of San Francisco ; to
G. W. Welch, of the Pioneer Book Store, and
to Geo. Stone, for sundry favors in the newspaper line.
.
New Postorrice.—A new postoffice has
been established at Globe Ranch, about fifteen
miles below Rough & Ready, on the Sacramento road, with Charle? Blodget as Post
Master.
VoLUNTBERS.—A company of volunteers, to
be called the Downey Guards, is being organized at Sucker Flat, with Ambrose Kerrigan as
Captain.
HospitaL Patients.—Eleven patients have .
been admitted into the County Hospital during .
the present month of August, and there are now
twenty-four inmates in the institution.

New Goods.—A. P, Caurca & Co., of Broad
street Book Store, have just received the following
pieces of Sheet music: Dixie’s Land; Child of the
Regiment; Marseilles Hyma; No Flag but the Old
Flag; Grand Parade March; Parthenia to Ingomar;
Mur Country’s Flag Forever; Stand by the Union;
Lassie Are You Waiting; Billy Patterson; Sadly to
Mine Heart Appealing; There are Kind Hearts Every.
where; Oh, Don’t You Remember the Time; Jockey .
Hat and Feather; Linger in Blissful Repose; It is .
hard to Give the Hand where the Heart can never be
The Star of My Home; Oh, take me to thy Heart
again; Cottage by the Sea, Also, a large lot of fine
Cutlery; Union Letter Sheets; New Song Books; Chil.
dren’s colored plate primers; Sheool cards—Rewards .
of Merit; Blank Books—half Russian and imitation; }
language of Flowers,—large and small; Partisan
Leader; Gunn’s Domestic Medicine; Chinook Jargon,
complete; Hollick’s Medical Works; Wing’s Medica] .
Works; Johnson’s Raselas; Scott’s Military Tactics.
Wordsworth’s Poetical Works; Motley’s History of .
the United Netherlands, 2 vols.; Drawing Instruments; Large Card Board, white and colored; Bill
Head Paper; Wrapping Paper; Ladies’ l’ortmonaies;
Goll leas and Holders, ete., etc.
ExPuLsion oF dupGe Catron From TEyNeEssEE.—The Louisville Journal, of August
13th, gives the annexed particulars relative .
to the expulsion of Judge Catron from .
Nashville, Tennessee :
One day last week the Vigilance Committee
of Nashville waited upon Judge Catron, and in.
formed him that he must either resign his office .
of Judge or leave the State, and asked him .
which he would do. The Judge was not prepa.
red to render an answer. The Committee gave .
him twenty-four hours to decide upon his course, .
letting him understand that if at the end of that .
time he should neither have resigned nor left
Tennessee, they would take his affairs into their
own hands—meaning that they would ejevt .
him by whatever force might be found neces.
sary. Within the twenty-four hours the old .
man took his departure trom Tennessee, leav.
ing his aged wife behind him, as she was too .
sick and feeble to be removed. We heard of
him in this city on Friday or Saturday, but did
not see him. We presume that he is still in .
this vicinity.
A Retic or tHe Past.—An ancient skillet
was washed out of a hydraulic claim not long
ago, on Brushy canon, several miles from Forest Hill, which certainly is quite an old relic. It
was found in two pieces, one half being discov.
ered two years ago, and the other half but re.
cently. tt was originally made out of lava, is .
almost as hard as iron, but now quite porous; .
it is circular, has a spout, the bowl is an inch .
deep and has three feet underneath, two and a .
half inches long, with a neatly-finished ovalshaped bottom. It was discovered by John)
Pearson, who has left it at Scott’s store, inten.
ding, we believe, to send it to the State Fair, as
a specimen of crockery-ware used in the mines
several thousand years ago.—[ Forest Hili
Courier.
WHat THr ErFrect wovuLp BE.—We hold
it to be self-evident, that if by any chance
McConnell should be elected, and the arms and
military organization of the State placed in_his
hands, California will speedily find herself in .
the condition of Missouri, with a fugitive Governor raising armies and making war on her
borders, or perhaps successfully maintaining an
armed dictatorship from the capitol itself. It
is as clear as the noonday sun, that from the
day the secessionists triumph in California,
business must be suspended, and eitizens called
upon to bear arms to quell civil war in our
midst.—[ Bulletin.
Fire at Rep Bivrr.—Last Sunday night
a fire broke out among some wooden buildings
near the Eagle Hotel, at Red Bluff, and ina
short time the hotel and several adjoining
buildings of wood were consumed. The origin .
of the fire is not known; the loss is variously
estimated at from ten to twenty thousand dol.

_Speoial Notices.
Who has not heard of Sand’s Sarsaparilla? How many have cause to be thankful that
it has cured their ailments, raised them froma bed
of sickness to the enjoyment of health and strength.
We wish every one to benefit by it—but caution ts
required—the very success of the article is turned
against it by the cupidity of others, and numerous
preparations of so-called “‘Sarsaparilla” are in the
market. The original and genuine article prepared
by Sands, being in universal use, is sold almost everywhere. Ask for that and take no other.
