Pevada Democrat. Volunteers, ' TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA! _E Strect, Near Corner of 84, Marysville. . The editor of an interior paper, columne, bas seen proper, fur political pur. poses, lo scek to throw obloquy upon the officers and men connected with “Stevenson’s Regiment,” and by villification of an upright, honorable aud gallant band of citizens and soldiers, has sought to accomplish partisan ends, Unjust and unfounded as are those strictures, if they had been conlined to abuse of myself, I should not have deemed them worthy the least notice; for . have lived in California nearly sixteen years to little purpose, if my standing in the community can be affected by the slander of mere political writers, whose motives, ob . jects and ends are transparent. But when, to reach me, a wholesale attack is made upon every officer and man of the regiment who came to California under my command I deem it my duty (and I assume it with great pleasure) to defend them; and that you may judge how little justification there is in truth for the misrepresentation which . has been indulged in, I beg leave to recur for a moment to a history of the regiment from its organization until it was disbanded, and which forms so largea part of the early and honorable bistury of California, The idea of sending a regiment of volunteers to California originated with President Polk bimself. He tendered me the command, and after its acceptance by me, my selection as commander of the expedition was not only unanimously approved by the Cabinet but by every member of the New York delegation in the Senate and House of Representatives of the nation, It was understood between the President and mysclf that the regiment should be organized as well for a permanent settlement of the Pacific coast, as for the conquest of California, aod that if at the close of the war California did not forma part of the United States, the regiment should be disbanded on the nearest United States territory on the Pacific coast. As the entire direction and control of its organization, equipment and outfit was confided to me, I determined to select both officers and men for their fature usefulness in a new country. How far I was successful in this may be judged when this simple bistory shall have been closed, Upon receiving written authority to raise and organize the regiment, the fact was announced through the newspapers of the city of New York, and the tender of companies was invited from every section of the State, Fiom the numerous applications for authority to raise companies, ten were selected with care, I reserved to myself the right to select my own field officers, and left the captains to determine upon their own subalterns, particularly instructing them in the selection for the rank and file of their companies, to admit none who were not respectable in appearance and reputable in de. portment, and as far as possible select young men from the mechanical and indus. trial classes of society, who were willing to become permanent settlers of the Pacifie coast, Asan inducement to mechanics, I was authorized, and purposed to farnish transportation for their tools of trade, and a reasonable umount of stock, and in thie particular my wishes were fully carried ont. When the regiment embarked for California, it was under the command of the following named officers, all of whom were men of ability, standing and worth: Henry 8S. Bourton, a Lientenant in the U. S. Army—Lieutenant Colonel, James A. Hardie, a Lieutenant in the U. . 8S. Army—Major. J. L. Folsom, a Lieutenant in the U. 8. Army Assistant (Quartermaster, These gentlemen were professors at the United States Military Academy at Weat Point when selected by me. William G. Marcy, Assistant Commissary of Subsistence. Alexander Perry, Surgeon, W. C. Parker, Assistant Surgeon, James C, Ward, Wagon Master, and Acting Assistant Quartermaster, CAPTAINS. Jobn E. Brackett of Obio, graduate of West Point, Henry M. Naglee of Penneylvania, Engi. neer, graduate of West Point, M. R, Stevenson of New York, U.S. A,, graduate of West Point. §. G. Steele of New York, printer. F. J. Lippitt of New York, lawyer. J.B. trisbie of Albany. lawyer. Nelson Taylor of New York, dentist. W. E. Shannon of New York, merchant, K. H. Dimmock of New York, farmer. J.M. Torner of New York, mariner, ed ucated for U.S, Navy. . Of the above named officers who survive, Lieut, Col. Barton, lately in command at Alcatrnz, ia now a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. Maj. Hardie is a Lientenant-Colonel in the United States . Army, and Assistant Adjutant-General on ' McClellan’s staff. Of the Captaius who suresate asennad NUMBER 649. vive; one isa Brigadier-General, two are Colonels, two Captains in the Federal army aud one isaranchkero in California, Of the Lieutenants, four were printers, five carpenters and ship-builders, two engravers, two law students, four farmers, four lawyers, five merchants, four clerks, Of these in bis/ten are dead, Of those who survive and are residing in California, fout are merchants, two rancheros, and one a county jclerk, Of those residing in other places, one is a mercbant in Mexico, one in the . Sandwich Islands, one a traveling corres. pondent in Evrope of the Alta California, / seven hold commissions in the army of the . United States, rauking from captain to cole /onel, and all of them respected by those /who know them, and I take pride ia saying . not one is in arms against the Federal Govy(ernment, Of the seven regiments raised in Califor. nia for the present war, there are 9, and in the army ou the Atlantic side upwards of . 25, of the rank and file of my old regiment, /who hold commissions ranking from Jieu. tenant to colonel. In the Convention that framed the Constitution of the State, in the . Congress of the nation, aud in the Senate and Assembly of the State of California from its organization to the present time, /and in the various county offices of trust and honor, the regiment bas been more fully and ably represented than any otber class of men of the same number who came to California since the discovery of gold. . At this time, wherever they are to be found, . from San Diego to the extreme borders of the State, they rank among the most ree pected, wealthy, and substantial tax-payers; /and during their whule term of service I . am not aware that they were ever charged with the commission of an act of oppression or fraud opon the inhabitants of the eoun. try where they were stationed. Without any fear of contradiction, I publicly de‘clare that no three ships ever brought to . the shores of California at any one voyage, 1,000 men, who bad among them a greater umber of honorable and useful members of society than tbe officers and men of my old regiment. . Of myself as itscammander, I have little 'tosay. I left my old home to become a . permanent resident of California, I have been here nearly sixteen years without once returning to the Atlantic States, 1 . beve never been an idler or the associate . of the rowdy or vagabond, here or elsewhere, or pandered to them for support or influence, and I sball not do so now even to secare my election, For fourteen years I have been a resident of San Francieco, and my course of life, both public and private, is well known to my fellow citizens, For the first time in California, my name (and without solicitation on my part) has heea placed before the people of the State, asa candidate for an important public ofi fice. Of my fitness for the place my fellowcitizens must form their own judgment from the manner in which I have performed every duty of life, either public or private, I am now, and ever have been, and ever 'shall be, a firm and unwaverisg Democrat of the Tompkins, Wright and Marcy school). ready at any time and place to peril every thing dear In life, and life itself if necessary, ia en; port of the Union, the Constitution and the Flag of my country, In the canvas for the office for which I have been nominated, I will do nothing to obtain any one’s vole or influence that an hovorable man should not do, so that if I fail in this election I shall not lose my own self-respect, or do aught to derogate in the least from that esteem of my fellow-citizens, in which I have reason to believe they have ever held me, J.D, Stevexson, Late Col, Com, Ist Regiment of N. Y. Vols. in California, duriog the war with Mexico. Tue Woopsaw Wranaie.—The 8. F. Call Saye: The law of the last Legislature requiring ‘the measorement of all firewood offered fur . sale in this city, bas so far had a hard road totravel. The inspectors have not been . allowed to pursve even tenor of their way . by pocketing their fees, but have been un. feelingly met at every point with obstacles that would discourage any but our woodmeasurers, Yesterday, in the Twelfth District Court, Herman Alpin, Captain of the . schooner Sarah Ann, began a suit, through his attorney, E. E. Sawyer, against WoodMeasnrer Geo. Hudson and Sterling G. Hopkine. He charges false imprisonment, and lays his damages at $5,009. The alleged imprisonment which the complainant characterizes as “false, malicious, and with. out any reasonable canse,’’ consisted in the arrest of Alpbin for a vivlation of the wood law, and upon which charge he was adjudged not guilty, He saye that his defenee cost him $500. The other $4,500 he . charges to the malicious deprivation of his . liberty, subjection to great pain of body . and mind, great exposure and injary to bis . character, eredit and circumstances, and . hindrance from performing hie lawful affairs and businese.
