A Txerip_e TRaGkGY.—Last night a ter_rible tragedy was enacted in my cattle-fold
. by two daring lions, The night was in.
. tensely durk, with occasional rain; and
fearing lions might select such a night to
surprise their prey, L sat op watching until
/a late hour. 1 bad just lain down, remark. ing tomy friend, that
‘from these brutes the oxen would give the
) alarm, when on a sudden
/ awful scream, followed by a death-like
. groan, such as I shall never forget; the ve. ry recollection of it chills my blood, Two
lions bad entered the enclosure and sueceeded in carrying away a poor fellow,
. whom they tore to pieces and devoured
. Within a esbort distance of ourcamp. We
neither could nor dared attempt a rescue,
The unfortunate man was lying in his hut
with his wife, aud two children, when one
/ofthe monsters forced bis way through
. from the back, and seized him, at the same
. time inflicting two wounds upon tbe woman, The poor wreteb in his hurried exit,
had evidently, in endeavoring to save
himself, laid hold of the poles of the hovel,
. forthe whole back part of the tenement
was carried away.—[Anderson’s African
. Exploits,
Cas OF THE Emiy St. Prerne.—In the
. British House of Lords, recently, Lord Brough. amasked for the correspondence which had
taken place respecting the capture of the Emily
. St. Pierre by the Americans and her recapture
. from the prize crew. He understood that there
had been some correspondence upon this subject, and he wished to know from the noble earl
Lord ——e whether there would be any objection to produce that correspondence.
. Earl Russell—I have no objection to lay the
. papers before the House, as the correspondence
. is now closed, and Lord Lyons, in his last let. ter, promised to send it home immediately. The
opinion of the law officers was taken upon this
. question, and they stated that there was no
. power in this country to surrender the vessel,
. or to give it upto the United States Government. It was at that time supposed there was
. no precedent to refer to, but I have been in. formed this morning that there /s a precedent,
. regularly enough, when the British Government
. demanded from the American Government the
. surrender ofa vessel which had been recaptured
by the crew after being seized asa prize. Mr,
. Adams, the grandfather of the present Ameri. can Minister in this country, was then Presi. dent, and he replied that there was no prece. dent for such a demand. The result was, the
British Government failed to obtain the redress
then sought from the American Government.

NUMBER 650,
Southern Hatred of the « Yankees,”
{From the Richmond Dispatch, of Jnne 10th.)
* * * Itis not to be expected that
Government, destitute alike of faith aed
humanity, will exchange the gallant South.
erp men, taken in our privateers and at
Fort Donelson, for creatures like these,
whom they do not want, and who they think
are rendering them a vervica by remaining
in captivity, where they assist in cousuming
. Southern provision, and bringing on, as
. they hope, a famine in the South, This is
the way in which the gallant Yankees hope
to subdue us, not by hard fighting. Now
the state of affairs would be very different
were we, whenever we bave occasion to
send prisoners eff on parole or to exchange
thm for other prisoners, to give a preference always to the Irich and Germans, Let
. Us keep the Yankees—especially the Maseachusetts Yankees—to the very Fast extrem‘ity. Let us always bave a reserve of them
. ou hand, We should be glad to hear tbat
all Irish and German prisoners were parol. ed ou the spot; Lut by no means, for any
cousideration whatever, parole a Yankee.
Keep them all. Keep every one, if it cost
half the provisions of the South to feed
them, If this policy be strictly pursued for
any length of time, oar word for it that
there willcome upaecry of distress from
Yaukeedom that will compe! their Government to act with honesty, however much
against their inclination,
We would reserve the Yankee Doodles
for aoother reason, The ecoundrels whom
Lincolo bas placed at the bead of his plandering hordes, threaten to shoot our partisans for defending their own country
against their aggressions. We tnust retali
ate severely for every murder of this kind
they may choose to commit. But it will not
do to hang Irish and German soldiers in retaliation. That will have no effect whatever. We must bang Yankees, and the best
among them that we can get. We must always keep a supply of hostages on hand,
and they must be genuine Yankees, Hitherto they have scarcely felt the effects of
this war, They have contrived to put foreigners and all the scum of their cities in
front, while, for the most part, they have
remained at home, entirely out of danger.
Since we cannot, as yet, carry the war to
their own firesides, let us make them fee] it
as much as we cao, They will feel it severcly eoough when we shall bave bung a
dozen or so genuine Yankees io retaliation
. for the murder of our partisans, Keep a
supply of Yankee prisoners always on band
is our maxim, It ie the surest way in the
world to bring the Yankee Government to
. ite senses,

. of the Fort Benton road opens the country to
easy communication with the East, and the
Homestead law will lead many to settle in its
fine valleys. Hence the country east of the
Cascade range of mountains is destined, at no
. distant period, to assume such importance and
. contain such a population as will cause it to be
set off as a new territory, and speedily grow to .
. a stature entitling it to be received as a State
into the Union.
CoLornado.—Wallace Woodworth, Esq.,
His party were forty davs from here to the Golorado river, though they traveled leisurely, He
returned by the Sradshaw route, in nine days.
. He did not go to the mines, but to the town of
La Paz, from whence the mines are distant
. thirty miles. No one works in the mines but
Indians, on account of the extreme heat. There .
. is no dispute of the richness of the mines. Mr.
Elijah Moulton returned last weck, and we
understand will make another trip when cooler
weather sets in. é

MouNTAINS OF Sitven.—The Silver Age
says: From a ure
. that the Ophir Company are shipping weekly,
. from their works in Wathoe county, the sum of .
. not less than $60,000 in bullion, and some
weeks it amounts to nearly $100,000 in value.
. This we call pretty good. At this rate the yield
. of the mine will probably reach the enormous
sum of three milions of dollars this year. There .
are hundreds of mines in our vicinity equally as
requires the capital to make them yield similarly.
F1LAx.—Good flax has been raised by O. Ir
win, near San Rafael, Marin county. The Jour
. nal says: ‘*Flax is found growing wild in all
our valleys an
. per cultivation it could undoubtedly be made
. one of the staple products of our State. There
is now a favorable opening for the cultivation
of this plant, andthe farmers should av ail themselves of its advantages. The seed is always
marketable, and commands a high price.
. Tue amount of sugar destroyed by the New
Orleans mob is now estimated at twelve hundred hogsheads; and the quantity left in the city
when the rebel forces fied, now to be shipped
North, as equal to ninety thousand hogsheads.
It is also stated that in course of time more
‘cotton than was supposed to exist there will be
' brought forward,
who was one of the party supposed to be lost, .
returned here week before last, safe and sound. .
The Indians are reported as .
sa reliable source we learn .
d on the hill-tops, and with pro.
. sertion that John Conness has taken the
. Republican pauty of Sacramento, is in the
. positical predilections of the nominees for
. the Legislative ticket. The Sevator( Booth)
is Conners; and Estee, Adams and Duncombe, on the Assembly ticket, ditto. The
. other two Assemblymeo, Barton and Warwick are Republicans. The Douglas membere, after begging into this body, were
troly generous,
I’ve been saying all along that Conness
would bave a dead thing in this county, as
i the Union Democrats, with one ticket, and
. the Adininistration Fasionists with another
would botb be favorable to him. But I
find I was too fast, and that another Richard isin the field,
Since Senator Latham has arrived, politice baveftaken a new shape. The legislative ticket to be nominated by the party
known as “Douglas Democratic,” will be
the supporters of the Hon, M, S, Latham.
So the contest here is now definitely fixed
. between Conners and Latham, If the
. “Douglas ticket” (which will be supported
unanimously by the Breckinridge men) carry Sacramento, then M.S. Latham gets ¢ix
votas for reelection, It the Connes#-Fusion
. ticket carries, then Oonnese gets four votes
if he neede them, or Phelps six, provided
. Conners cannot use his four,
The Legislative ticket ig strong one,
and hasthe elements of success, Nobody
but Latham conld tackle it with the least
hope of success, Booth, the Senator, isa
host in himself. There is no man inthe
city or county who has such a bold on the
confidence of the people. He is competent
to meet any one on the stump—even Mr.
Latham himself. Dr. Dancombe ard Messre.
Adams and Estee are also strong men.
ExnumMep.—The Oroville Foundry is sup. nosed to be located upon the site of an ancient
Indian rancheria. In making excavations to
their mould for casting the retorts for the Oroville gas works, a considerable quantity of human bones and skulls were thrown up, They
had the appearance of having been buried a
long time prior to the settlement of the country
by the white race.—[Butte Record,
AN inscription it i# eaid, may be found in
an Italian graveyard, which reads thne;
“Here lies Etella, who transported a large
. fortone to heaven in acts of charity, and
hes gone thither to enjoy it.”
