Acoustic Tunnels= Another Wonder,
In these days so full of wonders as the electric telegraph, the railroad, the daguerreotype,
and a dozen of other startling inventions, the
public mind is constantly as in the days of St.
Paul at Athens, seeking for “some new thing”
. greater than the last. As the transmission of
intelligence in a short time seems the order of
. the day, I beg leave to send you a copy of an
. article from Dr, Dicks’ works, on the subject of
. Acoustic Tunnels for the transinission of sound,
. believing that great improvements can be made
in them, especially since the discovery of gutta
. percha, and that we may be able some time or
. other to falk to John Bull across the Atlantic
ocean, Experiments were made in Paris by M.
Biot on the transmission of sound through air
in very long tabes, and through solid bodies,
. These experiments were made through long
. cylindrical pipes, which were coustrueted as
. fountains to embellish the city of Paris. With
. regard to the velocity of sound, it was ascerand possibly a little alarmed. and hesitated to
go any nearer. She then called to Mr. John
Ingram, who was passing near, and informed
him of the discovery. He approuehed, and
took ont the remainder of the bundle. whieh,
on examination, was found to bea coarse sack
nearly the size of a fifty pound flour sack, into
which the money ($1,160) and the papers had
been placed and tied up, aud put into one leg
of the pantaloons.
_ Altogether, we regard these as most extraordinary cirenmstanees. There were two men
entered the house at the time of the robbery,
Three pair of pantaloons were found with the
stolen property, indieating plainly that there
were three interested inthe robbery, This
fact is still more strongly substantiated by thé
amount found being exactly one-third the
amount stolen, Santa Rosa Democrat.
Sap Corscipence.—The Shasta Republican, in
noticing the death of Mr. James Henderson,

The deovared was much respected by all who

be mentioned asa sad coincidence, that the

Tue Scourar at New Orieaxs.—The Louisiana Courier contains a comparative statement
of the daily number of deaths by yellow fever
during the epidemic terms of 1853 and 1858.
The whole number of deaths in 1853 up to the
ist of October, was 7.896, and daring the present term up to the same period, they have numbered only 3,164, showing the present to be
less than one-half as fatal as the previous visit
of the epidemic. The figures for this year,
