WE WILL NOT BE OUTDONE!! the engineer escaped with no injuries except a few slight bruises, none of which, bowever, were of sufficient importance to prevent him from working during the day on which he made euch a narrow escape. Had the car, which was being hauled up the incline at the time of the occurrence, been filled with gravel instead of water, it is altogether probable that the man would have been crushed to death.—[{La Porte Messenger. Suarp Pracrice.—A strife occurred recently between Deputy Sheriff Johns, of Red Bluff, and Constable Sunderland, of Tehama, to levy an attachment on some furniture which was coming up on the boat. The Independent says that immediately on the boat coming in sight, ‘there arose an “irrepressible conflict’? between the two officers as to which should get the first grab. The steamer was hoarded by the two “irripressibles,’’ who sailed out into the river in small boats for the purpose, and while Sunderland rushed to the clerk’s office to make service, Johns performed a Blondin feat, by sliding down the tow-rope attached to the barge, boarded her, and took possession of the goods and chattels of the debtor, much to the discomfiture of Sunderland, who stood on the poop witnessing the extraordinary feat, but not having the pluck to follow. ‘ A Dvew in Arizona,—The Mesilla Times, of November Ist, says : A duel occurred at the Pino Alto mines between Henry Kennedy and Sam. Dyer. They fought at twenty paces with navy revolvers, Atthe first fire Dyer’s pistol snapped, when he received a slight scratch the disposal of Mr. Barland, the Britis) Consul. Two Nose Herors.—When the Lady Elgin, shattered and sinking in the waters of Lake Michigan, was «slowly bearing her three bundred victims to their unmarked graves, it was the captain of the steamer who sustained and cheered the disheartened and frightened passengers, His voice calmed their agitations; his. mind directed plans for rescue; his will controlled their panic and putan end to their insubordination. Through the long, and dreary night that Was spent upon the raft, it was be who counseled and guided. Andin the gray morning, when the fragile craft struck the beetling cliffs upon the shore, the captain still stood at his post of duty, and die seeking to save his charge. The name of the hero was Joho Wilson, When the Connaught lay rolling helpless in the trough of the ocean waves, @ mass of fire between decks, her passengers momentarily expecting to be burried into eternity, a emall brig loomed upon the horizon. Hours passed, and it neared the burning ship, attracted by the signal of distress, Cheerfully the captain of the little craft devoted himself to the rescue of the endangered hundreds, Every foot of his deck was covered with living beings. Fearfal lest he might be carried away from the wreck, he made himself fast with a hawser, When asked if he could save all on board, his answer was, “Aye, aye, I’ll stand by as long as there’s a soul on her.’? And he did. Not a life of the two hundred, for whom rescue seemed impossible, was lost. The name of this hero likewise was Joba . Wilson, It was a singular coincidence, and . one that will live in history. Tub FaMiny or Garwatpi.—The first who used this name, 80 far as is shown by history, was Garibald, Duke of Bavaria, ia the year 584, his ancestors having abandoned the title of King of Bavaria, because it displeased the Fraconians.
