mister: LOCAL MATTERS, Hovse Burnep.—The large frame building in Wood’s Ravine, built by Joseph Beard, during the quartz excitement of 1851, took fire between eight and nine o’clock last Thursday . evening, and was entirely consumed. The house . was owned by Messrs, J. Berry and Chas. Al-. brighten, partners in a quartz ledge, near . Wood’s Ravine, and occupied by them and . their families. The fire is supposed to have caught from some children’s clothing, which . had been washed and hung up before the fire in . a bed room to dry. When discovered, the flames . had attained such headway that no attempt was made to save the building, and it was wit difficulty that some of the children were rescued from the flames. A little child of Mr. Albrigh. ten was sleeping in a room by itself, and af. ter the room was all on fire and filled with . smoke, Mrs. Albrighten rushed in and brought . out the child, which was nearly suffocated by . the smoke but fortunately was not burned. Ev. ery article belonging to the families, except the clothing they had on, was consumed. Mr. Lester, who was at work on the lead and boarding at the house, rushed into his room, when enveloped in flames, and brought out his trunk. . His hair, whiskers and eyelashes -were pretty well scorched off, but luckily he was not much burned. The loss falls heavily on Messrs. Berry and Albrighten, who are left with their families . without an article of furniture or clothing; they own a rich quartz ledge, however, and we trust they will soon recover their losses. Fire ALArM.—The fire at Wood’s Ravine, . last Thursday evening, was plainly visible in this place, and caused an alarm. At first it . was supposed to be some building on Spring . street, back of the Methodist church, and an immense crowd of people rushed up Broad . street; but the nearer they approached to the fire the further off it appeared. The hose companies were both out, and we believe got their . hose attached to some of the hydrants, before . it was discovered that the fire was beyond! American Hill. A performance was going on . in the theater at the time, but the building was . emptied in double quick time after the first ery . of fire was heard, but happily without accident. . The auditors didn’t stop to get checks, and were permitted to return on stating that they were . among the crowd that rushed out. It was noticed that the audience had largely increased . after the alarm had subsided. ' Turater.—The entertainments at the thea. ter on Thursday and Friday evenings were well . attended, and the plays of “Coleen Bawn,” and . “Wine Works Wonders,” were presented for the first time to a Nevada audience. This evening the play of the “Octoroon” will be repeated, and the company will take their departure . to-morrow. Mr. Perry isa talented and ver. satile comedian, and the Nevada theater-goers . speak of his performances in the highest terms of praise. The stock company is one of the best that ever visited Nevada, and presenting . new pieces they could’not fail to attract good . houses. Youne America Co.—This company suspended work in their lead on Saturday last, in consequence of the tunnels falling in and the shaft timbers having sprung, so that the work could not be carried onto advantage. They . are now sinking another shaft, and are already down eighty feet. During the past year the company have worked at great disadvantage; . they have taken out during that period over . $40,000, all of which has been expended in carrying on on the work. They have a good lead, . and when properly opened, they are confident it will pay largely. BurGLaRy.—The house of Mr. John Lan. caster, an Boulder street, was broken open last Thursday evening, during the absence of the family, and rummaged over bya burglar in search of plunder. Mr. Lancaster went home abont ten o’clock, for the purpose of going to bed, and the thief jumped out a window as he opened the door. The night was very dark, and no attempt was made to follow the rascal. Cuinesr Muss.—An affray occurred yes. terday evening, at a Chinese gambling house, . on Commercial street, whiclr created a tremen. dous excitement among the celestials. One. Chinaman had his arm badly cut by a knife in the hands of another. Special policeman Scott . arrested five of the celestial rioters, and the case . was to have been ventilated before Justice Ken. dall this afternoon. P oxice IrrMs.—On Thursday evening, Paul . Warnington and James Spargo were arrested . by officer Rider, on a charge of drunkenness . and disorderly conduct. Thes were examined before Justice Smith, found guilty and fined . ten dollars each. Michael Piner, alias “Jack of Clubs,” and John McKinsey, arrested yes. terday evening for quarreling and agnting, were . tried this morning and fined six dollars each. QuvarTEeRLy MeErTtnc.—The quarterly meet. ing of the Methodists commences this evening, at their church in this place. Rev. Mr. Fisk, Presiding Elder of the District, will be in at. tendance. } PrEACHING.—Rey. Charles Derking will . preach in German, at the Court House, to morrow afternoon. Services will commence at two o’clock. . rived in Nevada this afternoon, from Virginia City, which place they left on Thursday. They came by way of the Henness Pass, and report the road in excellent condition, and but little snow on the route. For tz Hoprpays.—Geo. W. Welch, of the Pioneer Book Store, Commercial street, has just received an extensive assortment of elegant book, card cases, dressing cases, toys, etc., suitable for Christmas and New Year’s presents. If the vitalizing fluid which pervades every tissue membrane, fibre, filament, gland or other organ, primary and subsidiary, be charged with the . elements of disease, sickness must be the consequence, and until the causeis eradicated, no permanent relief can be expected.
