The following dispatch was telegraphed on Monday and published in Tuesday's Union : Quincy, Dee. 23.—The Philadelphia Inquirer bas a dispatch from Baltimore to the effect that Fort Pickens opened fire on Fort McRae three times since the 22d of November, but with what effect is not stated. Quincy, Dec. 23.—Later news has been received from Burope, The Trent question continues to excite the public press. Large 100 pound Armstrong guos are being distributed among sbips preparing for sea. A great Irish mass meeting was held in Dublin to consider affairs between Great Britain and America, Tbe fever ran bigh iu favor of sustaining the cause of the Uniled States. Ireland strongly sympathizes with the Federal Government, France, it is thought, will do nothing to irritate Great Britain. General Scott’s Retirement, The New York correspondent of the &. F. Call makes the following rather startling statements relative to the cause of General Scott’s retirement : A most startling disclosure, fally authenticated and sustained in detail by private letters from bigh authorities in Washington, is made by the statement of Gen. Patterson, now published for the the first time, regarding the Ball Ran disaster, The facts, which are piain and unvarnished, have been long known ‘ at Court,” but were suppressed by General Patterson, who has submitted to every sort of insult and contumely, rather than involve the country ia the trouble which a revelation would Lave created, Ii is time, bowever, that the world should koow that it was to General Scott himself that we were indebted for the disgraceful results of that movement; his orders being eo absurd and contradictory as to bewilder and bedevil the clearest head, while, at the same time, numerous dispatches from General Patterson of the most important character were left entirely unanswered, The only solation to this extraordinary conduct is incapacity, the result of age, or the counsel¢ of bis relative and aid, Col. Scott, who was dismissed from the service recently, for what cause the country did not know, but which now seems to have been for bie suspected traitorous proclivities. Among military men of the bighest character, and among the officers of his own command, who have all along understood the affair, General Patterson is looked upod as a martyr, bis courage and ability are undoubted, and the forbearance be has displayed in the midst of the most exaeperating circumstances, until General Scott had been skillfally, and without violence, manipulated out of the command, is very creditable to his forbearance and generosity. Private letters also reveal the most untoward state oi things which existed between General Scott and General McClellan, The latter was thwarted in every possible way in bis plans, and orders constantly broken in upon by General Scott, who was exceedingly jealous of the inflaence he was acquiriog in the Cabinet and in the field. Previous to the so-called retirement of General Scott, which was accomplished with a flourish that does honor to diplomacy. Gen. McClellan had been harrassed and annoyed into writing his resignation which was ready for presentation, a circumstance, which forced proceedings against General Scott to a climax. This may be relied on as true. Tae “ CaLirorniaA Gana’’.—Military men from this State have been designated as “the California Gang,”’ and it must be admitted that California is pretty well represented in the army. A correspondent says: Gen. Scott himself has been fo Californ a; Geo. McClellan went to California ona surveying expedition; Gen. Wool remained there for several years; Gen. Halleck isa resideot of that State; Gen. W. T. Sherman, lately in command in Kentucky, was a long time a resident there, as well as Gen. Buell, his successor; and among the Generals who have been there may be counted the lamented Lyon, Gen. Harney, Gen. Sumner, Gen. McKinstry, Gen. Baker, Gen, Hitchcock, Gen, Keys, Gen §Heintzleman, Col. Geary, Gen. Denver, and Colonels, Majors and Captains innumerable, Caste Amono Animats.—The San Jone Mercary discovers that the enlightened dogs of that town despise the paganism of Chimen’s dogs, and never lose a chance to pitch on and whip them. It, also, tells of a py with ao irrepressible desire to devour elestial immigrants. Probably these creatures sre animated by the souls of transmigrated members of the Anti-Coolie Aesociation. ani AS A
