Aevada Democrat. X ———~" LOCAL MATTERS, Tus WeaTuER.—After a moderately pleasant day on Christmas, giving hopes that the . storm was over, the rain set in again early Thursday morning, and continued to fall stead. iy until about nine o’clock this morning. During the most of the time it was raining very hard, anda high wind prevailed lastnight. The quantity of water that fell at this place in the course of twenty-four hours ending yesterday morning, measured four inches, and nearly twelve inches has fallen since twelve o’clock Saturday night. This morning, the water in Deer creek was within a foot of the highest mark attained on the 9th inst., and as large quantities of tailings have been washed out of ped, the volume of water in the creek must have yon greater this morning than at any previous time this winter. The South Yuba was also very high this morning, but we have heard of no damage of consequence. The sun came out about two o’clock this afternoon, and there is now a prospect of pleasant weather. Fremen’s BaLt.—The second annual ball given by Pennsylvania Co., No. 2, on Christmas Eve, was a decided success, though in consequence of the severe storm, the attendance was not as large as it otherwise would have been. An excellent supper was gotten up by Mrs. Blum, and every thing passed off pleasantly. BRoAD STREET BRIDGE.—One of the stringers of the Broad street bridge was carrieed off . last night, which has considerably weakened the structure and the upper side has settled . several inches. Teams have crossed the bridge to-day, but itis not safe. The damage can be easily repaired when the water in the cretk goes down. Masonic ELEcTION.—At a regular meeting . of Rough & Ready Lodge, No. 52, F. & A. M., held on Saturday evening, December 14th, the following officers were elected for the ensuing Masonie year: Joseph Heritage, W. M.; W.C. Ault, 8. W.; A. C. Congleton, J. W.; W. R. Coffey, Treasurer; Henry Davis, Secretary. UNDERMINED.—A large pine tree, standing on the brink of Gold Run, having been undermined by the action of the water, was blown over last night. It fell across the flume of Styles’ mill, destroying the tank and several of the boxes, but the damage was not great. Comtnc Down.—An old member of Fennsylvania Fire Co, thinks that the old member of No. 1 could play better on a sprinkling cart than ona piano, and that the change in his profession would be highly satisfactory to the community. Express CHANGE.—Mr. J. H. Colby, the obliging and attentive expressman to Eureka, has sold out his route to Mr. W. D. Long, of Moore’s Flat. Mr. Long makes his first trip on Sunday next, Tur Opposition Dry Goons Store, opposite C. W. Young’s, Commercial street, is again open, and are now prepared to supply their old friends and patrons with all articles in their line at opposition prices. Feuron Market.—Pat. Mulcahy, as will be observed by reference to his advertisement in another column, has opened a meat market on Commercial street, two doors above Mayers & Coe’s boot and shoe store. Doe Figut.—A matched dog fight, for $100 aside, has been made up between Ashmore’s “Spot” and Taylor’s “Boxer,” to come off in Tracy’s Arena, on New Years’ Day. INSTALLATION.—The officers elect of Nevada Lodge, No. 13, F. & A. M., will be installed at Masonic Hall to-morrow evening. Daxcinc Parry.—Mrs. Sweeney gives a party, at her place, near the Half-Mile House, this evening. eI UT WA SoMETHING MysTreK1ovs.—On last Friday, the leg of a man was found washed down Yreka Creek, to the rear of John Trickle’s lot. bones were well set, though the flesh was all gone, and appeared broken from the body at hip joint, It was carefully examined by + Dain, who says it belonged to a very large man, and that it wasa white man. The supposition is that it came from the bank or sewer hear Miner street. A mystery seems to hang over this discovery, as there is no knowledge of any person ever being buried near the creek neither are there any shafts sunk that a person might fall into.—[Yreka Journal, Dec. 18th Tuearrican IncrpENt.—While McKean Buchanan and his daughter were performing ‘0 one of the most solemn and affecting scenes of Hamlet, at Mokelumne Hill, recently, a tall ls came into the theater, and walking up ‘0 within a few feet of the stage, stood, Jost in , t, gazing intently on the performers, mo for the risibilities of the fair » who was compelled to give way to laughter at the Sadletnns appearance of the The audience stamped and roared and fora few minutes the piece was turned & comedy, Baxx P; pani¢ at the Bay, among the depositors in the Savings and Loan Bank.
