The Bulletin correspondent of the 6th of October
in criticising the different Photographic Pictures at
. the last State Fair says:
. ‘On the opposite wall hang the contributions of
. J, Shew of San Francisco. These alsoare most creditable specimens of the photographie art. Among
. them is a life-size head and bust of Senator Broder. ick—probably the most perfect which has been made
. of the late Senator. Side by side with these, havg a
series of most wretched libels on the art contributed
. by some one in Nevada, They serve, however, to
set off to better advantyge, the productions of more
skillful competitors.
As that paper don’t give the name of the artist who
. send such pictures, it must be known, that A,
LIEBERT, the Photographic Artist of Broad street,
published in the papers of Nevada, that he was the
only one in this city who sent pictures to the State
Fair.

. Secession at Inpian Hiwt.—A_ corres. poodent of the Marysville Appeal, writing

and board, and the subsequent failure of
coercion to restore union audharmony, A
married woman of the place left her bushand for an affinity. The husband went,
with ten of his friends, all armed ‘witb pis. tols, knives and whisky, to tear ber from

NUMBER 402.
Sour America.—Dates from Lima and
Callao, to November 29th, repreeent that
he greatest excitement prevailed in the latter city, on accouut of an attempt atlution which took place on the 23d Yous,
The revolationists bad brought over onehalf of a batallion, and directed themselves
early in the morning to the house of the
President. They disarmed a part of the
guard, killed its officer, wounded severely
the President’s aid-de-camp, and would probably have succeeded in their attempt, Ir the
Colonel of the same batallion, with the rest
of his troops, had not arrived to tarn against
their revolutionary leaders, and to shoot
several of them down—amongst them the
son of old General Aparicio and Col, AlarThe others made their escape. President Castilla himself was hidden during the
affray, which saved his life. The conspiracy was made by the ultra Liberal party
in favor of Gen. Firmin Castillo and of the
Constitution of 1856; and therefore the
country may congratulate itself that the
outbreak did not succeed, for the Constitution of 1856 was the most ridiculous composition for a half savage country that eould
be imagined; the abolition ef capital punishment which it decreed was quite enough
to make its results pernicious.
Gen, Jackson on Nvuuiricatigy.—The
following is an extract from Gen. Jackson’s
proclamation to the people of South Carot.na, when that State “nnllified:’’
“Tell them, that compared to disunion all
other evils are light, because that brings
with it an accumulation of all—deelare that
you will never take the field unless the star
spangled banner of your country shall float
over you—that you will not be stigmatized
when dead, and dishonored and scorned
while you live, as the authors of the first
attack on the Constitution of your country!
its destroyers you cannot be. You may disturb its peace—you may interrupt the
course of its prosperity—you may cloud its
reputation for stability—but its tranquility
will be restored—its prosperity return, and
the stain upon its national ¢ aracter will
be transmitted, and remain an eternal blot
. last, and sent one of their number, who
thought he had some influence with the recreant wife, to reason the matter with ber,
She answered his pacific arguments with a
vesse} full of hot water, and an imperative
orde> to “git”? ; whereupon he ‘got,’’ and
all negotiatiations ended. The assailing
party, finding that forcible measures would
be forcibly resisted, concluded to return
whence they came without more ado, A
few days subsequently, one of the flume
. hands, named Burns, was met by some of
“the ten,’? and fired upon in a very cow. ; ardly manner by two persons. He had to
. run for his life, and was luckily not hit.
He has since lodged a complaint against
his dastardly assailants, and warrants are
. now out for their arrest. The citizens of
Indian Hill are much incensed at the attempted murder.

published at Honolulu, says in its issue of
. December 8th :
On Saturday evening the weather was
fine, the sea still, and but little winda stirring. During the night the sea gradually
. rose in the harbor of Kabului to toe height
. of eight or ten feet above its ordinary bigh
. water level, and spread over the beach, de. stroyiug several fences but doing no other
. serious injury. On Sunday morning the
. sea, though still very fall, had greatly sub.
. sided in height, but throughout the day the
. bay was full of tide-rips and the water was
. boiling, as ifin a kettle, the weather still
. continuing good with but little wind. At
. Maliko the water rose up a glen or little
. valley, which abuts on the sea sbore, and
. washed away a small hamlet, of 10 or 12
. native houses, only one house being left
standing. The sea rising gradually, the
people had warning, and no lives were lost
. CamELs vs. Mvuirs.—Ono this head the
. Placerville Califoraian observes :
A late number of Hutehing’s Magazine,
. gives an interesting history of the Bactrian
. camels imported by an enterprising firm of
. San Francisco. If 600 pounds is the aver. age cargo, we see no great advantage to be
derived in substituting camels in place of
. mules. Mead’s train left this city a few
. days since with telegraph wire for the Over. land Co., each pack weighing 420 pounds,
. and made the usual time to Carson City.
. Taking into consideration the great differ. ence in cost, and weight of cargo, we see
. no great advantage to be derived by substitutiog camels for beasts of burden in
. place of the tough and hardy mule, espe. cially in this latitade. Down South, the
. camels would perbaps have the preference.
Nep McGoway.—The Amador Ledger
. learns that Ned McGowan has taken up his
. residence in that county; a later report,
. however, says that only bis hat and coat
are there, he having left for Congress,

Earty Piery.—A remarkable case of
very “early piety’? has just been found in
Brussels. The police, making their rounds
at midnight, found an ordinary clothes line
hanging near a door, several feet above the
ground, and tracing its history discovered
that it came out of a garret window above
They entered the house, convinced that
they were on the track of a daring burglar
thoroughly searched all the premises and,
at last, on walking into the garret, were
horrified to find themselves confronted by a
housemaid, in a very easy evening dress
who, with many tears, explained that the
mysterious clothes-line was attached to her
left arm, in order that a young waiter, to
whom she was attached, coming early in
. the morning, with a jerk might call her to
prayers at the cathearal, As this exvlained
the clothes-line, and there was not much in
the clothes-line before them, the discomfitted and blushing police beat a hasty retreat,
enn
j Ir people would discern and distinguish,
insiead of confusing and confounding, they
would see thatthe best way of putting
down the abuse of a thing, is to make it
useful. Would you lop off everybody's
hands, beeause they might be turned to
. picking and stealing? Neither is the intel. lect to be shorn of any of its members ; seeing that, though they may all be perverted
they may all minister to good. The busy
have no time to be fidgety. He who is following his plough, will not be breaking
windows with the mob, Littleis gained by
overthrowing aud svevping away an idol,
unless you restore the idea, of which it is
the shell and sedir 2nt. Nor will you find
any plan so effective for keeping folks from
doing harm, as teaching them to employ
their faculties in doing good, and giving
them plenty of good work to do,—
at Truth. 9) sa
Live in tae East.—A late traveler has
in a few words described the most striking
. features of oriental cities, He writes: “Dir.
ty streets, foul gutters, narrow lanes, filthy
rags, starved dogs, stately dromedaries,
stubborn donkeys, lazy lubbers, eross-lecged Turks, skulkiog Jews, black Nubians,
brown Bedouins, suunds unearthly, sights
disgusting, smells distressing, grand squares
splendid bazars, glittering domes, tapering
minarets, and dear and dirty hotels.”
ImpupENce.—It is said that Lincoln has
received from California numerous applications for office, with requests for replies by
Pony Express—at his own expense, of
; course! There’s impudence,
Governor Downer refuses to accept the
resignation of Brigadier General Cobb.
