THE GOLD HUNTER’S REVERIE.
BY M. QUAD.
Safe in the folds of a gold hunter’s sack
He found hid away, When he came to unpack,
‘A faithful companion o'er his weary track—
That darned old stocking.
And it conjured up like a magic wand,
Cherished thoughts of 4 far off land;
‘The smiles of friends, the grasp of the hand—
That darned old stocking ;
And a neat white cot, ’mid the shade of trees,
A retreat in the summer breere,
The inmates all happy and busy as bees—
That darned old stocking.
It called to mind the gray-haired sire,
Smoking his pipe by the evening fire, .
Chatting of ‘erops’’ and of accidents diro—
That darned old stocking.
And his spectacled dame. o’er her favorite page,
Reading of hope for youth, and solace for age,
Of wisdom alike for suckling and sage—
‘That darned old stocking ;
And a blue-eyed maid, and her parting wishes,
For Heaven's kind care, and least for riches,
‘As she turns her head and silently stitches
That darned old stocking.
It prompted the hope of a time to come
When the wanderer, wearied, shall cease to roam,
And the sinile and kiss shall welcome him home.
That darned old stocking ;
A happy Lome in some sheltered spot;
A dear little wife, the light of the cot,
Contentment, plenty and peace and what not—
Oh! the darned old stocking;
On Christmas eve it shall hang on the wall, *
And on Christmas morn will be found in it all
The dear faces of home, both great and sinall—
In that darned old stock ing.

Criran Heapep Justice.—Quite an amusing circumstance transpired at Tehama the
other day. A law suit was being tried before one of the Justices of the Peace of that
township, in which suit there was involved
a sum considerable less than a thousand dollars, and on which was engaged, of course,
attorneys for both plaintiffand defendant.
The testimony was duly put in, and the
aforesaid attorneys severally poured forth
thier logic and eloquence for the enlightenment of the Court. The closing attorney
made a two hours’ speech which was listened to with due attention and respect; but
on the attorney’s commencing to wade into
the third hour, with no signs of stopping,
the Court began to be restlesa in his eeat,
and gave peo signs of impatience,
The counsel observing this, remarked to
the Court that “he had buta few more
words to say, and would not tive the , patience of the Court but a few moments
longer.’ “QO, go on, go on,’ remarked the
Court, “it won’t make any difference; I
rendered a verdict in this case two hours
agol’? The attorney incontinently dropped into the nearest cbair, “resting,’”? both
himself and case, without farther remark.—

Vocar, Exurcise.—I will here introduce
a fact which has been suggested to me by
my profession, and that is, that the exercise
of the organs of the breast by singing, contributes very much to defend them from
those diseases to which the climate and
other causes expose them. The Germans
are seldom afflicted with consumption, nor
haye I ever known one instance of spitting
blood among them, This, [ believe, is in
oye occasioned by the strength which their
ungs acquire by exercising them frequently ia vocal music, for this constitutes an
essential branch of theic education.— (Dr.

sexes, Jt matters not from what cause the disease
originated, however long standing or obstinate the
ease, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than
a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment. even after the disease has baffled the skitt of
eminent physicians and resisted all their means of
cure, The medicines preseribed are pleasant, without odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and
free from mereury or balsam. During fifteen years
of practive, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and California, 1 have rescued from the jaws of death many
thousarids, who, in the last stages of the sbove men
tioned diseases. had been given up to die by their
physicians, which warrants me in promising to the
affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, a
perfect and speedy cure, Private dixeases are the greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause
of Consumption, Serofala, and many other diseases,
and should be a terror to the human family. A _permanent cure is seareely ever effected, a inajority of
the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but rulp
the constitution, filling the system with mercury,
which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a
rapid consumption.
But should the disease and the treatment not cause
death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is
entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble
constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a
virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers,
eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes,
throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief existance of suffering, and consigning them to an early
grave,
Senp-Anvee is another formidable enemy to health,
for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases cnuses so destructive a drain upon the system,
drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years
of suffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys
the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the enerproper developement of the syster, disqualifies for
marriage, society, business, and all earthly happiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and
mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train of
evils more to be dreaded than death itself,
fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims
of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy eure can
be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous
orous heelth,
Trregelarities, and all diseases of males and females,
practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most
remurkable cures. Medicines, with full directions,
their symptoms, Business correspondence strictly
