A War Party on the Southern Route,
An Overland traveler, writing to San Francisco Bulletin, gives the following account of
a meeting with a war party of Apaches near
Tueson :
_ I stated in one of ye previous communications that an old Mexican had been shot by the
. Apaches, near Taeson, and that some fifty or
sixty tame Apaches and Mexicans had revenged
hia death by slaughtering seven of the Apaches.
Que hundred Apache warriors, on bearing the
news, instantly started for Sonora, to avenge
the killing of the seven, Well, they went to
Sonora, and terribly avenged the death of their
braves. They slew, without distinction, either
of age or sex. But the most unpleasant part
of this affair, to us, was that while passing between the Farewell and Tank (or Barnet) statious, at 9 o’cluck at night, we were surprised
to find the savage warriors encamped in three

Tus Eartuquaks at San Jose—Prosrscr or
aN Erurtioy.—A correspondent of the S. F.
Herald, writing from San Jose, under date of
Nov, 27th, says:
_ The earthquake was very sensibly felt in this
city. Scarcely a brick building escaped more
or less injury. Quite a number of citizens are
now suffering from cold, caught by flying from
their houses into the streets, hall dressed, at
the time of the shock, In connection with the
earthquake I may add, that yesterday evenin
some parties who were traveling on the roa
from here to New Almaden discovered, about
two and a half miles from town, near a place
called the Willows, three small fissures or openings iu the earth, of a circular form, em tting a
considerable ay of steam, Hundreds of people visited the place to-day, and were astonished to sce the strange spectacle. It arises from
the bowels of the earth, in a perfectly dry soil,
The openings are about the size of the crown of
a hat, and when a band is inserted in the opening it becomes moist, and in a few moments too
hot to keep it there. The sides of the hole is
covered over with a white layer, somewhat re;s*mbling alkali, Many are the conjectures as
. to what they are, or what they may prove to
be. Some anticipate a volcano, aud otders hot
springs. The impression is that the openings
were caused by tbe earthquake. They might
pave beeu there before it, however, but not uoticed.

Later From Los ANGELES.—-We copy the following from a telegraphic dispatch to the Sacramento Bee, dated San Jose, Dec, Ist:
The Los Angeles stage of the 28th ultimo,
arrived here at balf past 11 o'clock, this forenoon,
In regard to the Gila mines, the Los Angeles
Star says: “They are represcuted by some as
yielding as low as two dollars, and others put
itas high as twenty dollars, per day to the
man.’ It further says that gold is there, but
whether in such abundance as to warrant the
influx of a large number of people, is yet somewhat doubtful.
The trialof Pancho Daniel for the murder
of the late Sberiff Barton, in February, 1857,
is attracting a large share of attention in Los
Angeles. Various proceediugs were had in
Court, and great difficulty found in getting a
jury. Twenty-six jurors were excused out of
fifty-six summoned, and bias was alleged on
the part of the Sheriff in summoning the jury.
Triors were appointed hy the Court, and the
Coroner was called and the triors given into
his care. They gave their verdict that the
challenge was true. The Coroner was also
challenged for bias, and bias found to exist.
The Coroner resigned, and the Court appointed
another, The case was finally transferred to
Santa Barbara county.
Mr. Stevens, of the overland mail company,
who came from Fort Yuma, says the news from
. the mines is not of an exciting character. He
thinks a few men might do very well on the
