NEVADA DEMOCRAT.
DisTRESSING AcciIpENT AT Monte Cristo.—
The Sierra Democrat gives the following particulars of a distressing accident which happened
at Monte Cristo, Nov. 26th:
John Geary, working in the Ravine tuanel,
after working his shift, quit in the evening, for
supper. Contrary to orders of foreman, the
men frequently ride out on top of a car-load of
dirt. Geary did so on this occasion, and when
the man running the car had pushed it to the
top of the grade, he let go—calling to G. to
“look out!’ G. supposed that the man meant
that he must lie snug, to keep clear of the timbers—which he did—supposing his comrade
still had the car in eheck. He fet the car go
on, instead of slipping down and applying the
brake to it. Directly he discovered the error
he had committed, but the car was going at
headlong speed, and he was too late! he could
not check it if he were off, and could only get
off at the risk of his neck. Where the track
terminates is at an elevation of some forty feet.
An empty car was at the end of the rail. This
was thrown off, and the runaway car went off
the precipice, upon the rocks below. After this
perpendicular fall of 40 feet, Geary rolled down
about 150 feet into the ravine. From the car
he went bead first, but turned a sumerset and
struck feet first among the rocks, producing a
compound fracture of the right thigh about four
inches from the joint, extreme laceration of the
right ankle, and a compound fracture of the
left leg near the ankle joint. Wherever the
bones were broken the splintered and jagged
ends passed each other and entered several inches into the flesh—cleaning it from the bones,
and making an unsightly mutilation. Geary
was taken up into the town, and Dr. Bryant sent
for, who soon arrived theie and dressed the
wounds, set the bones, and gave directions for
his nursing. An artery in one leg was severed,
but having been jammed off in so rough and
unscientifie style, by the rocks, no blood was
lost front it. Geary is now dving well, and the
Doctor hopes to save both legs for him.
INDIAN Trovpies IN TEuAMA couNnty—TweEsTY-THREE [NpIANs Kr.iep.—The Tehama Gazette,
of Saturday last, gives an account of Indian
depredations upon the inhabitants of Round
Valley, and the terrible retribution upon the
savages. The Crazelte says:
Many of the farmers have recently losta
large number of beef cattle, and one man. within a sbort time, bas had stolen from him, ten
head of ,valuable horses. Swine without number bave disappeared, together with other
things of more or less value. Exasperated beyoud endurance, the rancheros sallied out into
the woods one day last week and killed nine of
the ringleaders. The day following, Mr. S. VP.
Storms, agent at Nome Cult, being called upoa
to investigate the matter, ordered the Indians
to produce from among them those who bad
been cngaged in the stealing. Twenty-one
were given up. Intending to set an example
by hanging some of the worst, he first took the
precaution to examine their huts for arrows ;
to his surprise he found but three, the others
being undoubtedly concealed in the brush,
While preparing to do as he had preposed the
whole number of culprits broke for the chapparel, but ere they reached there fourteen of them
were killed, The arrows were found shortly
afterwards and the startling disclosure came to
light that a conspiracy was on foot to murder
the inhabitants of the valley. The lesson taught
the Indians, though terribly severe, will not be
without its effict; and that the inhabitants may
have some security for their lives and property,
we learn that a detachmeut of one hundred soldliers has been ordered to the Reservation,
Their presence will undoubtedly have the effect
of keeping the ludians within bounds,
Native Correr.—We have been shown by
Mrv Vanderlooy of tais place some very beautiful specimens of native copper which were taken by some French miners from a claim of
theirs near Gibsonville, Sierra county. One of
the specimens is entirely pure, or apparently
so, and was fuund ina seam in the bed-rock,
It is shaped like some of "those strange branchcs, or roots, which are often found growing in
rocky crevices, flattened into many curious angles and curves, and weighs about 2} pounds.
Another specimen, not so large, is flat and circular, crystalized on its upper surface as though
precipitated from a solution by galvanic process upon spears of grass and sticks, the bottom
of the cake being smooth, To this piece particles of earth are clinging which contain copper
inthe form of a earbonate. Mr. Vanderlooy
was informed by bis Freuch friends that there
is considerable copper in the vein where they
found these specimens. It will be remembered
that a gentleman of this place has found a considerable amount of copper in his quicksilver
and gold amaigum from time to time, These
indieations, slight as they are, that such a useful metal exists in these bills, warrants the supposition that it may yet be discovered in remunerative quantities. Hydraulic Dress.
Cuiware ov Canmornta.—In an article in the
December number of Hutching’s Magazine, by
John S. Hittell, upon the climate of California,
the writer says:
“A railroad, about one bundred and eighty
miles long, running nearly due cast from Oakland, through Stockton and Sonora, and hear
the Mammoth Grove of Mariposa and the YoSemite Valley to the summit of the Sierra Nevada, would enable the people near the line to
place themselves, every summer's day, in any
tolerable degree of either beat or cold. Figh.
teen miles west of Oakland lies the beach of the
Pacific, where a chill breeze blows without ceasing; and, going eastward, the traveler would
gradually get into a warmer clime, until in
Stockton be would find the thermometer at 100
degrees, most of the summer noons; and. going
still further, he would gradually rise into the
almost freezing comb of the Sierra. A branch
road running southward to Fort Yuma, would
enable the traveler to enjoy almost as greata
variety of climate, in a winter's day, as could
be found in the otber during summer.”
Fousp.—All of the old settlers in this county
remember the atrocious murder by Indians, on
Yager Creck, in 1852, of the two brothers Cooper. It will also be recollected that a few
months after they were murdered a portion of
the remains‘of one of them, together with some
clothing were found a short distance from the
spot, in thecreek. In a conversation with Gen.
Kibbe, one day this week, he informed us that
a gun which belonged to one of the unfortunate
men at the time of the murder, had been found
by one of the volunteers, last week. It was
lying in the water, near where the remains
were found, and was recognized by several men
in the company. It had been rendered useless
before it was thrown away.—Ziumboldt Times,
Nov. 27.
Serious Dirricuttry at Sonoma.—We are informed that a serious difficulty occurred in
Long Valley, about the 17th of Nov., between
two brothers named Dutton, and a man named
Poe, in which the latter lost his life. It appears that the difficulty originated in a dispute
about a land claim; and one of the brothers being armed with an ax, prevented the interference of the by-standers, and urged the other,
who was armed with a revolver, te kill Poe.
Dutton fired five shots, two of which took effect on Poe, one of them shattering bis wrist,
the other piercing his side, killing him in a few
hours. The surviving parties, at last accounts,
continued to hold possession of the claim and
remained unarrested.— Sonoma Co. Dem.
A Saame.—We learn, says the 'Yreka Union,
from reliable sources, that while N. Chase was
lately confined in the county jail for safe keeping, on account of insanity, he was severely
horsewhipped by the Deputy Jailor, as is stated,
for misconduct,

Healing, Curative, Soothing and Extracting Qualities,
Known to medical science, that physicians, families and
medical men are gratified and astonished at its results.
BES 6 EE Tee
It almost immediately extracts the pain, and heals the
wound without a scar. When applied to any
Swelling, Sore, Chilblain, Poison, Burn, Skin
Eruption, Itch, &c.,
Its effects are magical.
McAllister's All-Healing Ointment
Is truly a Family Medicine, which cannot be well dispensed
with. The estimation in which this article is held in some
sections of the country is such, that parents would not retire at night without some of it in the house.
Dear Sir :—In December, 1850, 1 passed through a very
virulent attack of shall-pox, leaving me covered with eruptions, and one eye entirely closed, In three days from the
time I commerced using your ointment! was entirely
cured, and not a pit or scar can now be seen on my body
As my case wasa very remarkable one, it affords me
pleasure in informing others of what MeAllister’s Ointment
lide. V a will do. Very respectfully yours, D. omnes,
194 Jay street, Brooklyn.
Thereby certify that I have been effectually cured of severe piles of long standing by the use of McAllister’s AllHealing Ointment. The cure was entirely effected by less
than six boxes, I have paid different physicians more
than $100. Everybody ought to know about this ointment

J. REGAN’S
Steam Refined Candy Manufactory,
NO, 38 MONTGGMERY STREET,
Between Bush and Sutter Streets, San Francisco.
Poets sing of the spicies in Tndian Isles,
Of the citron, the orange and lime;
They sing of the fragrance so lavish diffus’d,
By the breeze in each tropical clime.
Let the epicure boast of each high-tlaver’d dish,
The flavor of wines or French brandy,
Yet none of the list named above ean compare
With J, Regan's “Steam Refin'd Candy,"
Rich kpices and fruits and sweet flowers may be good
Or dishes for epieures dainty; ,
But the question in this I will not debate,
Yet cach haye admirers in plenty,
Withal, there are none of them half so well prized,
From the sweet prattling child to the dandy,
As that sweetest of sweets, everywhere idolized.
T mean Regan’s ‘Steam Refine’d Candy,”
Rogan’? was flest, on the Pacific Coast,
Who made confections—the fact Ik Known well;
Tho’ ‘twas seven years since, he continues it still,
And sells by wholesale and retail,
He is selling his stock at sueh redaced rates,
That purchasers are always handy,
And they find each variety known fo the trate,
Among J, Regan’s Steam Refin’d Candy,”
Here's an hundyed varieties that need not be nam’d
And being made by the new improved process;
He can sell his goods cheaper than any other man,
For parties, to families or grocers,
Of French candies now, his assortment is large,
And buyers will find it most handy,
To call or send for their holiday stock right away,
Of J. Regan’s Steam Refin’d Candy.’? t
