MRA So sd WEDN [xcenvtsRisM.—Two attempts were made last week, by incendiaries, to set fire to the town. Between eleven and twelve o’cloek on Tuesday night, a fire was kindled in a narrow alley between two houses in the" Chinese part of Commercial street. The flame was accidentally discovered by Mr. Dickerman, who put it out without difficulty. The villain had packed ina lot of shavings and pieces of a dry box, which he set on fire and left the box of matches near -the spot. A man named Barton was arrested on suspicion of being the incendiary, but there being no evidence against him he was discharged. The next night, an attempt was made to set fire to the blacksmith shop of Mr. Donlan, on Spring street. An old broom had been placed near the side of the building, and some thin strips of board stood on the broom, the upper ends resting against the side of the house. The broom was then set on fire, but the boards being wet the fire went out before any damage had been done, and it was not until Mr. Donlan went to work the next morning that the incendiary attempt was discovered. Four Men Drownep x a Tonxet.—A terrible accident oecurred on Saturday last, near Grass Valley, by which four men were drowned in atunnel. The names of the unfortunate men were Francis Lampsbire, Christopher Mathews, Alexander Jeffrey, and Patrick McGraw. They were at work with six others in the claims of Frieot & Co., on New York Hill. A shaft bad been sunk to the depth of 126 feet, and the work was carried on by means of a drift from the bottom of the shaft. The workmen unexpectedly cut though into some old works above them, when a flood of water broke in, filling the drift and shaft to a considerable height, almost instanuly. Six of the workmen managed in some way to escape up the shaft, but the other four were drowned. Their bodies were got out of the drift, about noon on Monday, and an inquest was beld by Justice Heywood, of Grass Valley. Ricu Quantz Discovery.—We have received intelligence of the recent discovery of a rich quartz vein near Greenhorn creek, in this. county. The vein was discovered about six) weeks ago, and the rock taken from the erop-. pings showing considerable quantities of gold, . the discoverers were encouraged to sink an ineline upon the vein, As they went down on the vein, the rock continued to improve in richpess, and on Friday last, one sack fall of the decomposed rock, taken out at a depth of fortyfive feet from the surface, netted $1,500 in gold. The vein was discovered by Messrs. . Nicholas Cupich, Joseph Zaratin, and others, . and is ealled the Slavonian Lead. Other com. pauies have taken up claims on the lead adjoin. ing those of the discoverers. TsamsteR Ronsep.—We learn that a teamster was robbed on Tuesday evening of last week, near the Kentucky House, on the Auburn road. While traveling along in the road, four men suddenly made their appearance, two of whom stopped the mules, and the other two coming up on each side of the wagon and presenting their pistols to the teamster, demanded his money. He told them he had no money, but the robbers insisted that he had, and find. ing resistance useless, he pulled out his purse, containing about seventy dollars, which he gave . them. The robbers then decamped, and the teamster prooeeded on his way. Wedid not learo the name of the teamster. TaxatricalL.—The Stark Theatrical company have been playing two weeks in this county, alternating between Nevada and Grass Valley, and have attracted good houses on every evening. The tragedy of Macbeth was played toa full house at the Nevade Theater, on Monday . evening, and the members of the company are deserving of mach credit for the faithful and correct rendering of their several parts. The play of Hamlet was presented Iast evening, but we go to press at too early an hour to speak of the performance. The company, we understand, leave to-day for Dutch Flat. Aviku oF Firk.—A tremendous excitement was created in this place, about seven o'clock, . on Sunday evening, caused by the burning of a transparency in front of the Fashion Restau. rant, on Commercial "street. The alarm of fire’? was no sooner heard, than the streets were instantly filled with people, all rushing towards the quarter whence the alarm proceeded. The transparency caught from a camphene lamp, and the flames soon communicated with the cloth awnings in front of the restaurant, but fortunately there was no wind at the time, aud the fire was soon extinguished. . DwEtLine Burnep,—The dwelling house of Mr. Samnel Hyatt, at French Corral, was deetroyed by fire last Friday morning. It appears that a little son of Mr, Hyatt acc identally eet fire to the curtains round a bed, and being! frightened, ran off without informing his pa. rents of the accident, and the fire was not dis-. covered until it was too late to save the house. . The household furniture was mostly burued. Cocxty Bustness.—The Board of Supervisors . will meet on Monday next. The regiar term . for the transaction of county business commen. ees on that day, and the Board will doubtless . be in session the most of the week. We notice . that Mr. Everett, the Sapervisor for the third Mistrict, who has been absent for some time in the Atlantic States, returned on the Sonora, and a full Board will be present st this term. . New Dry Goops Stors.—Messrs. Hagadorn & Bewley have opened a new dry goods store, on the corner of Main and Washington streets,’ . They have on band a large and well selected . stock of goods, of the latest and most approved fashions. We call attention to their advertise. ment. . F . ARRIVAL.—The family of Dr. Harvey Hunt . one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens, . arrived from the East, on the steamer Sonora, Jast week. Mrx1nG.—The Nebraska Company cleaned up $10,655 10, on Saturday last, for the weck’s work. The Live Oak Co. took out during the week, $6,562 43. Mastrsrs Wm. «& Geo.
