NEVADA DEMOCRAT.
“WEDNESDAY MORNING, FEB. 15, 1860.
phipencon etnias
AtrempT aT Murper anp Ropsery.—A diabolical attempt was made last Saturday night,
to murder and rob Mr. A. Sanford, of this place.
Mr. Sanford was sleeping in his store, a onestory brick building near the foot of Broad
street, and about twelve o’clock was awakened
and saw two men standing ever him, one of
whom held iu his hand along two-edged dirk
knife. About the first words Mr. Sanford heard
were a demand for his money, the fellow at the
time holding the knife directly over his face to
enforce the demand. Sanford screamed ‘‘mur™
der!’ and almost on the instant, the assassin
stuck the knife into his mouth, knocking out
two teeth, and the point taking effect under the
tongue and penetrating to a depth of about two
inches, By closing his teeth, he prevented the
knife going deeper, and grabbing the blade
succeeded in wrenching it from the villain’s
band. He then got hold of his pistol, but the
robbers took it from him and left, Sanford following them to the door. While the scufling
was going on, Mr. Sanford continued to cry
“murder!” so loud that he was heard in most
parts of the town. Mr. Raymond, who slept in
the building on the opposite side of the street,
d was just going to bed when he heard the
very, immediately run down stairs, called out for
the night watch, and started towards the store,
In crossing over, he saw aman come out the
front door, aud run down Broad street. On
arriving at the store, he met Mr. Sanford coming out, still crying ‘murder !’’ and bleeding
profusely. Besides the cutin his mouth, his
ihand was badly cut while in the act of wrenchling the knife from the assassin, A crowd soon
collected at the store, and Dr. R. M. Hunt was
immediately called to dress Mr. Sanford’s
wounds. The wound in his mouth is very serious, but is considered dangerous.
ter the affair happened, Marshal Tompkins and .
officer Rider arrested Frank Brooks, Andrew
Scola, and Charles Sanford, who were committed to jail. Brooks was identified by Mr. Sanford as the fellow that siruck him with the
knife, and Scola is supposed to be the other
robber. Charles Sanford is a son of A. Sanford, and a worthless young fellow. The three
have been running together for some time, and .
it is believed that Charles Sanford gave Brooks
and Scola the information which induced them
to attempt the robbery. The three are now io
jail waiting an examination,
We cal!ed on Mr. Sanford yesterday evening,
and found that his condition had much improved. From his statement, there can be no doubt
that his son, Charles Sanford, was connected
with the affair, and was probably in the store
. Cover, Sor Turoat, Broxcuens, or any other affection .
when the robbery was attempted. When Brooks
made the attack, he held a light in bis hand by
which Mr. Sanford was able to recognize him,
Resisting Orricers—Desreratk Fionr.—
About half past one o’clock, last Sunday morning, a man named Appersun informed officer
Rider that he bad just been severely beaten by
-one Frank Williams, at the Virginia House,
and requesting that the latter be arrested. As
Apperson haa evidently beed pretty roughly
handled, Rider proceeded to the Virginia House .
to make the arrest. Ou entering, be found six
gr eight persons in the bar-room, and among .
them I’rank Carter, the proprietor of the house,
* .
who told Rider he would not allow any arrest .
to be made in his house, and ordered kim to
Rider finding that the crowd were determined to prevent the arrest, sent for Marsbal
Tompkius—Williams baviag in the meantime
fortified himself behind thecounter, Upon the
arrival of Tompkins, Carter left the room, and
after a desperate
leave.
resistauce the officers succeeded in arresting Williams and another man
named Crawford, who were locked up in the
town prisou. As Rider went bebind the couniter to take Williams, Tompkins stationed bimself in a position to keep the others from iuterfering, but was attacked by three or four men,
one of whom approached from behind and
struck hima severe
head. He fired two or three times at his assailants, and Crawford fired twice at him.
Tompkins then used his pistol asaclub, and
succeeded in laying several of his assailants on
the floor, Crawford among the number, Rider,
after a severe tussle, succeeded in overpowering Williams, having closed his “peepers’’ by a
few well-directed blows. Tompkins was pretty
severely injured, several ugly gashes having
been cut on his head; Rider escaped with a few
slight scratches. Wm. Draper, who was present
duripg the most of the time, rendered the officers very efficient service in making the arrests,
Frank Carter was arrested the next morning,
tried before Justice Smith, and fined fifty dollars; Williams was tried ye#terday and a like
fine inflicted upon him. Crawford was exam.
ined before Justice Smith yesterday afternoon,
and held to bail in the sum of $2,500 to answer
to the charge of an assault with intent to com.
mit murder. He had not succeeded in finding .
bondsmen at five o'clock yesterday evening.

‘The Medical and Surgical Institue of Dr.
L. J. CLAPKAY, is already secured in a position which
places it, as well as its proprietor, far above the assaults
of envy and professional malice. In the schools of France
the highest prizes are often awarded to practitioners in
this department of Medical science, and they occupy with
others, an equally lofty position in the profession. Ricerd
is an illustrious example, a shining light among the philosophical stars of his age in Europe, and Dr. Czapkay has
fully equaled him in this country, asa proof of which,
the Philadelphia College of Medicine complimented him
with a Diploma, and the honorary ad eundem degree. Selecting this as his field of operation, although qualified as
a graduate of the University of Pesth, and late Chief Surgegn ofthe Hungarian Pevolutionary army, for more extention to the cure ofchronic and private diseases, in
regarded as the LaapeR inthis branch of his profession
throughout the United States, and his portrait and biography are published as a matter of interest to their readers in the most exclusive journals. The Doctor's offices
are at his Medical and Surgical Institute, on Sacramento
street, corner of Leidesdorff, nearly opposite the buildings
of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
