~arreuete> Ropstry.—A bold attempt was
spade last Saturday night to rob Henry Hyer.
Mr: Hyer bad spent the eveniag in Pete’s lager
beer saloon, on Broad street, and about 12
o’elock started for his lodgings on Commercial
street, passing through a vacant lot from Broad.
Just as he gotto Commereial street. he was
met by two men, one of whom presented a pis16] and the other bowie knife. The El Dorado saloon, Which isabout fifty yards from the
spot, was full of people atthe time. Hyer
thought he would not be robbed when help was
so near; andbefore the villains bad time to
speak, he e¢reamed “murder,” and jumped for
the knife, which he eueceeded in wrenching
from the fellow’s hand. While the tussle was
going on for the knife, the other man fired
three-shots at Hyer, but luckily without effeet.
By this time a number of persons were sccn
coming to the spot, and the robbers left, firing
another shot through a Chinese house as they
crossed Commercial street. As Hyer grasped
the blade of the knife, be cut a deep gash in
his left band, nearly severing bis thumb, but he
retained the knife aud still has it in his possesstow. It iss very large bowie knife, and was
recognized as one which had frequently been
put “in soak”? by rome of the sporting frateraity. It is not known who had it last.
Covsty Hosritat.—The Board of Supervisore closed the contract with Des. Hunt. for taking care of the indigent sick, last Saturday.
e bids were put in at so much a day iv cash,
and se much in scrip, on the indigent fund,
for each patient. That of Drs. Hunt being
ene dollar in cazh and a dollar and twenty
cents in scrip. The Board after making a carcful calculation as to the amount the scrip would
probably bring in market, concluded to pay in
scrip at a dollar and twenty cents a day. During the past year, the scrip on this fund bar
sold at from seventy-tive to eighty-two cents
on the dollar. The last that was suld was at
weventy-cight cents. Counting the scrip as
worth eighty cents on the dollar, the amount
paid will be equal to ninety-six cents a day for
each patient.
We have been requested by one of the Su‘pervisors to state that the bid of Drs. Hunt was
accepted in preference to that of Dr. Cummings,
fur the reason that they preferred to give the
contract to two physicians, aud not because
they cousidered Dr, Cummings any less competent thaa the others, They did not take upon
themselves the responsibility of judging of the
professional qualifications of the different ap
plicante.
Transver or Fcsps.—The Board of Suapervisors have ordered all the cash in the county
special fund to Le paid over to the general
fund. The amount in the special fund, after
the orders recently allowed are paid, will be
frem $7,000 to $8,000; this, being applied to the
general fund, will save the county some $500
or $600 a month which is now being paid for .
interest. The Supervisors allow bills only at
the regular verms, and before the next regular
meeting of the Board, it is estimated that a
sufficient amount will accumulate in the spe‘cial fand to pay all demands upon it.
Granxp Jcury.—A Grand Jury was empanneled before the Court of Sessions on Saturday
last. They were in session two days, Saturday
and Monday, and found two indictments. The
partics indicted have not yet been arrested, and
consequently their names are not known, The
Jury recommended that additional fastenings
he procured for the jail. The case of the County Treasurer was not investigated, as all but
five of the jurors bad either formed or express.
¢<d an opinion in the case.
