Ia our we gave a short account of commenced on the 8th of December. Io ge descriptions of the we Gnd some interesting scene. A Naples correspoodent, writing December 10th, thus describes # night view of the eruption: Last night the view which present a itself from my windows was very grand; black colamu rose ically, and was carried off by the wind far over the sea, while forked lightning, as it were, and brile Jiant lights such as Roman candles, played about the crater. This morning the volumes of smoke are win and roiling one over avother ia graud iuvolutions, while the eastern sun behind them gives hues which it is @Mficalt to describe. Beyond the pall which hangs over the sea it is impossible to see auytbing except when an opening is made by a gust of wind, aod then one sees a picture of Sorrento or Capri bang in the centre of a deep black cloud. The Naples correspondent of the London Times, writing December 21st, gives an interesting narative of the state of Vesuvius on the 18th, whea the mountain presented a splendid spectacle: At every shot that was fired by the mountain there rose a cloud of ashes in the form of a pine-tree, which fled off to the south as another shot was fied aud another cloud arose, Asthe heavy-laden clouds eacaped beyond the power which had expelled them and as the aqueous vapour was condensed, we could see at intervals showers, nay, storms, of asbes falling like avalanches on land and sea, and still the black gorzeous masses rolled on towards Capri, obscuring the coast which lies opposite to Naples, Thunder aud lightning, or the roaring of Vesuvius, aod electric lights, were frequent incidents in this awful scene; the latter, shot up from the mouth of the crater to the pot of the dark cones, played about its involutions, ard revelled, as it were, in the license of freedom—the daylight could not obsoure its brilliancy. Towards sunset we marked that effect of color which is only to be seen in southern Jatitndes, for then the mass of dark cloud which haag over Veruvius and the entire bay was lit up with the most delicate roseate tints. Then came on grey eve and darker night, rendered still more #0 by the electric hes which con. tinued to dance above Vesuvins. On the next morning I went down to Torre agaio. Alas! it is a city on crutches; many cripples have fallen, and many are falling. Profes sor Palmieri, the great Vesuvian authority, confirms the report of the elevation of the soil; and ‘hopes that the proprietors will not rebuild watil the depression which may be expected has taken place.’ Yet, with a fatuity which appears like madness, the people are with difftulty beld back from returning to their perilous dwellings, It is the fact that Goneral Della Marmora has been compelled to station roldiers there to prevent such folly. From ali I cao gather, the mountain was split from top to boitom, the fissure reaching far into the sea. In a few words I will’show this, There are eleven craters above Torre de! Greco, all emitting sulphorous vapors, and the largest is from 7O0ft, to 8Oft, fee. and 100ft. deep. From this point, on the 8th inst,, after heavy rumblings add beaving of the surface, the grouod was eplit open, and a fiery fissure was made almost to the oulekiris of the city, through which the same unseen oy passed, opening the streets and layog bure some parts of the former buried town, and then ranging into the sea, All this inevident to-theeye. You see the tissure io all directions, and walk daiutily at times lest you fall in, or lest some rickety building may come down, Yesterday, the 20th, the Exmouth, which went ont to try her Armatrongs, returned by Torre del Gread, aod made the cireuit of a whirlpool, now formed, which.must be about 360ft. in diameter,’ It was boiling violently, and emitted astroog sulphurous odor, A boat 30ft. ia length was let down and seot into the centre of the whirlpool, when it’ was turned rapidly round by the volcanic force beneath, The sounding gave 23 fathome of water, and the plammet brought up sand and sulphur, From a part of the circam. ference a tail, so to call it, about 60ft. io width. runs away io the direction of Sorreoto, and isof a beautiful light green color. All the water here was tepid, bad a strong areneone smell, and many fish bave been yed. Mrs, Gexerat Garves.—I had the pleasure of an interview with Mre. Gaines, on This lady, after four months of waiting bae at length obtaived permission to pass the Federal lines on a visit to New Orleans, moots she wo fs to be able to secure some portion of the immenee propert which the Supreme Court Surack ia ber. YOUNG addresses those who are suffering under the afffiction of private disease, whether arisi from impure connection or the terrible vice of abusé, Devoting his entire time to that particular branelt of the medicai profession. hie feels warranted in GUARANTEEING A CURE IN ALL CASES, whether of long standing or recently contracted, entirely removing the dregs of disease from the system, and king @ perfect and l’ERMANENT CURE, “Te en id call the attention of the aMlicted to the fact of his long standing and well earned reputation, furnishing sufficient assurance of his skill and suc"Upwerds of five thousand cases have been discharged eured in the year ending July Ist, 1960, showing a record surpassing any hospital in the United States ConsuLTATION, by Caution to the Pablic. Every intelligent and thinking person must know that remedies handed ovt for general use should have their efficacy established by well tested experience in the hands of a regularly educated physician, whose preparatory study fits bim for all the duties he must fulfM; yet the country is flooded with or nostrums and ewre-alls, purporting to be the »st in the world, which are not only useless, but always injurious, The unfortunate should be Par TICULAR in selecting his physician, a5 itisa lamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic patients are made miserable with ruined constitutions by mal-treatment from inexperienced physicians in general practice; for it is a point generally conceded by the best syphilographers, that the study and management of these complaints should engross the whole time of those who would be competent and successful in their treatment and cure, The inexperienced general practitioner, having neither opportunity nor time to make himself sufficiently sequainted with their pathology, comonly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an indiscrimmate use of that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mercury. More caution, however, should be used by thesyph. ilitie patient, in cousulting nominal physicians of the advertising class, as nine-tenths of them are imposters, who assume German, French, or other names, and are without any claims to medical knewledge. These knavish rascals infest all large cities, and, by means of their lying advertisements and posters, they induce the unwary to enter their Peter Funk “institutions,” and unmereifully fleece them and poison them with mercury. T’ersons living at a distance in the country are more apt to be duped by the lying notices of quacks than citizens. In view of the above facts, Dr. J.C. YOUNG would say that he is the only regularly educated physician in Catifornia now advertising, who devotes his whole time to the treatment of venereal diseases. YOUNG will guarantee a perfect and permanent cure in the following cases, or he charges nothing for his services: Syphilis, Gonocrrhea, Strieture of the Urethra, Affection of the V’rostrate Gland, Weakness of the Genital Organs, Impotency, Sterility, both in the male and female, Spermatoria, or Semlnal Weakness, Noctural Emissions, Rheuma tism, Dyspepsia, indigestion, Fever and Ague, Incipient Consumption, and all Irregularities in Females, together with all diseases of Women and Children; also, Nervousness, Palpitation of the Heart, etc. Persons nfilicted with symptoms after being treated should consult Dr. Young at once, as no disease ia cured unless the patient feels pertectly well. If there is a particle of disease left in the system it will brexnk out some future time, when least expected, or be handed down to an innocent offspring. Persona who have been treated with mercury should be very . cautious in believing that they are well, for it ina scientifie fact thatt he mercury will mingle with the venereal, and form a disease a great deal worse than the original. All those who have reason to think, by bad feelings, that they have been treated thus, should consult Dr. Young, and he will examine their cases and tell them at once how they stand. letter or otherwise, Free. TAKE COURAGE—NEVER DESPAIR. NeLson Creek, Sept. 30, 1861. Dr. J.C. Youxc,—You will remember what a poor wretched crea'ure I was when J fast saw you, and the result has astonished me as well as my friends. Your invaluable prescription and excellent advice have completely overcome ailments such ar, it seems to me, never afflicted mortal before. I never wrote a letter with greater sati-faction than I pen this, I shall remember you with gratitude as long asl live. That you may live long to alleviave the sufferings of others as you have mine, is my earnest prayer. Please accept my heartfelt thanks that you have brought this almost hopetess case to so happy a termination, Yours, truly, JAMES HALSEY. STRICTURE. This termble disease is alarmingly on the increase in this country, and should be attended to in season for there is no complaint more dangerous, and attended with more suffering than this fatal disease. Any person who has been troubled with venereal,
seminal weakness, or any other private disease, should watch very closely for this trouble, Its first symptoms is generally an unpleasant sensation in the parts, sometimes of a tickling nature, an uneasiness of the mind, an undefined dread of something you know not what, and if not attended to the urine becomes affected, and then follow all those dreadful symptoms which so often result in ® miserable and disgusting death. But the suffering, before death comes to rehheve the patient, is dreadful; sometimes plangiag the sufferer into that ving death—Insany. Dr. J. C, Young’s mode of treatment is a new discovery, made within a few years by M. Ricord of the French Venereal Hospital; and is sure. safe and speedy. All afflicted should call on Dr. Young at once, and they will be sure ofa permanent cure without an operation. P. 8.—Dr. J.C. Persons wishing to avail themselves of D.
