Quva.irication Test For 4 CALIFORNIA Scuoo1
Tyacuer.—The Red Bluff Beacon relates the
following as baving occurred during the educational history of that town. There being a vacaney in the town, an applicant offered his services, but the Trustees being themselves rather
defective in school “larnin’,’’ distrusted their
y to judge of his qualifications, but finally
eoncladed, as he handled the gad with considerable dexterity, to emply him for a short time
on trial, and in the mean time to examine him
in open school, They accordingly on the second morning after the school began, set out for
the school house to perform the learned task of
examing the new teacher. On the way, one
asked the other what questions they should propound? Neither one was even educated in the
elementary branches, and consequently they
had no idea how to conduct an examination.—
Finally they fell upon a plan which by the time
they reached the school-houee was fully matured. It was this: they were to light their pipes
and go in smoking, andif the teacher would
stand that, he was not fit toteach. They accordingly went in puffing away, and took their
seats, where they sat smoking so long before
they were noticed by the teacher, that one remarked that he would not do; but before they
had time to consult together as to the propriety
of sending bim away as unworthy, he approached and ordered them to leave the house. This
was sufficient; oy, immediately sent for a person who could write, (Prof. G.) and had him
indite a certificate stating that he was eminently qualified to teach, and recommending him to
the favorable consideration of parents and guardians, wheresoever dispersed around the globe.
Tt is very essential that school trustees should
at least be able to read questions,
Tax Assets or 4 Mercantire Hovse.—A
commission merchant, whose name is familiar
on Buffalo ’Change as household words, and
whose witand humor never “dry up’’ under
any condition of things, a few years since went
to Oswego, and, as has been publicly announced, ‘suspended.’ It is now said that an eastern banker, whose institution was amongst his
heaviest creditors, paid him a visit with a view
te look into his affairs. After the usual salutations and greeting due to politeness, a colloquy something like this is said to have eecarred:
“Well, Mr.—, I understand you have suspended.” :
“That is so, I believe, sir,”
“Yes—well, as our bank is your largest creditor, we would be glad to know what shape the
affair is likely to take.”
“Certainly, sir.”’
“What is your indebtedness?”
“Well, sir, as near as I can get at it, 1 owe
about $550,000.” :
This was a poser—things began to look a little blue,
“Have assets, I suppose 2’
“Certainly, plenty of assets.”
“Well, to what amount, and in what de they
consist ?”’
“Well, sir, I value my assets to an amount
greater than my indebtedness, and they consist
of a wife and four fat babies, worth more than
$100,000 each.’’
The banker looked astonished, while the
merchant gravely proceeded to whistle the air
of “Poor Uncle Ned,’’ and keeping time to the
music with his fingers, ona desk which had
kept the history of his rise and fall in trade.
Hanir anp Commonication.—It is said there is
rcarcely a trade which does not) give its own
distortion to the body and its own cast to the
countenance. Skilful detectives, we are assured, can tell the carpenter from the bricklayer,
the tailor from the shoemaker—nay, can even
distinquish between the professor of the various
branches of felony, by certain indubitable indications of face, gait, and manner. Mentally
there are similar divergencies ameng different

GENERAL TONIC FOR THE SYSTEM
IT IS UNRIVALLED,
Science has never yet explained the philosophy of digestion. We know that the masticated food is first converted
into the semi-tluid called chyme, and afterwards, by admixture with the gf secretions and other fluids, into
chyle, a milky fluid, which, in its p to the veins,
becomes blood. But how this ts tahcted, we know not,
Now it is evident, that if this vital fluid be diseased or
impure, the substances formed from it cannot be healthy,
and every organ, fibre, and tissue of the body will be in an
unnatural state. This eondition of the system is developed
in various forms; sometimes, outwardly, as in Scrofula and
other ulcerous and eruptive diseases; or inwardly, as in
Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Swellings, and decay of the
Bones. It is evident, then, that a medicine which will
CLEANSE AND PURIFY
the elements of the blood, will eure these deplorable disorders; and practical experience has established the fact
that Sanps' SagsaraniLa is that medicine. By expelling the very seeds of disease, it restores to the stomach its
tone; to the whole digestive apparatus, its vigor; and to
the blood, its healthful character,

Messrs, J, H. Reep & Co.: Gentlomen,—I obtained from
your store a bottle of Sanps’ Sarsaparilla, and was then
confined to my bed, without sleep, for a week, occasioned
by a violent pain from a regular Fever Sore, of long standing, on my right leg. My physicians advised me to have .
the limb amputated, saying it was the only means likely to .

to subside, and by the time [had used nearly threo
bottles, I was able to transact my regular business, and

it to all my friends as a most valuable medicine for the
purification of the blood.

. stances, and of my inability to reward him for his services;
his health, Borne down by the distressing symptoms incident to the vicious practice of uncontrolable passion in
youth; depressed in body and mind; unable to perform
tions of life, I sought the advice of many physiclans, who
at first regarded my disease as of trifling importanee—but
alas! after a few weeks, and in several instances months,
of their treatment, I found to my unutterable horror, that
instead of relief, my symptoms became more alarming in
their torture; and, being told by one that my disease, being principally confined to the brain, medicines would be
of little consequence, I despaired of ever regaining my
health, strength, and energy; and, aso last resort, and
with but faint hope, called upon Dr. Czapkay, who, after
examining my case, prescribed some medicine which almost instantly relieved me of the dull pain and dizziness in
my head, Eneouraged by this result, I resolved to place
myself immediately under his care, and by a strict obedience to all his directions and advice, my head became clear,
my ideas collected, the constant pain in my back and
groins, the weakness in my limbs, the nervous reaction of
my whole body on the slightest alarm or excitement, the
misanthropy and evil forbodings, the self-distrust and want
of confidence in others, the fnability to study and want of
resolution, the frightful, exciting and at times pleasurable
dreams at night, followed by involuntary discharges, have
all disappeared; and in fact, in two months alter having
consulted the Doctor, I felt as if inspired by a new life—
that life Which, but «a short time ago, I contemplated to
end by my own hand.
With a view to guard the unfortunate from falling into
the snares of incompetent quacks, I deem it my duty to
offer this testimony to the merit and skill of Dr. CzapKay,
and recommend him to all who may stand in need of medjeal advice, being assured by my own experience, that
once under his care a radical and permanent cure will be
effected. B. F. PituMore.

{L. 8] Joun Mippixroy, Notary Public,
CAR D,—Prompted by an honest desire of my heart, I
wish to lay before the public a case which deserves a high
commendation, not only as an act of scientifle skill, but
that of humanity also, About two years ago . suddenly,
and from causes unknown to me, was seized with a fit of
EPILEPSY, which, owing to my inability to meet the expenses consequent upon a thorough medical treatment,
and the discouragement which I met with on attempting
it, soon became such (as 1 was then led to believe) as to
dofy the skill of any physician. 1 was frequently while in
the pursuit of my calling, thrown down to the ground,
without the slightest warning; and although insensible to
the agonies, I yet despised the miseries of my life, and
soon learned to look upon those who would render assistance, or shelter me trom danger, as enemies who sought
to prolong the existence of my miseries.
While in this state, and having previous to my affliction
tasted the sweets of life, I onee more was induced to attempt seeking aid of a physician, and, by recommendation,
. called upon Dr, L. J, Czapkay. I told him my cireumregardless of which, however, he at once undertook my
case, and with the blessing of God, T was once more restorod to perfect health, Unable to reward him for the boon
which I enjoy at present, and yet conscious of my indebtedness, I consider it due to myself and to all afflicted, to
make the case public, in order that those in need of medieal advice may finda physician in whom overy confidence
can be placed. Mrver Yautonsky, [L, S.]

READ AND REFLECT,
R, CHARLES H, TOZER’S CARD to the afflicted of California, In approaching any new course of systematic inquiry, there are certain points concerning which the
inquirer should always be careful to #atisfy himelf He
should comprehend distinetly what the subject of inquiry
is—Health and Diseases.
If we can form and fix fn our minds a clear conception
of the state of Health, we shall have no difficulty in understanding what was meant by Disease, Butbeyond, though
not above, these objects of investigation of the human
body, we have another and stillnobler end. It isto lay
before you in such plain terms that you cannot be mistaken and will know where to apply for relief.
the signs of particular diseases, it will be proper to take a
general view of symptoms, When a person ia troubled or
afflicted with disease, which causes a weakness of tho back
and limbs, pain in the head, dimness of sight, loss of muscular power, palpitation of the heart, irritability, nervouaness, dyspepsia, derangement of the digestive functions,
general debility, symptoms of consumption, and many others which are better explained than put om paper, and require Medical or Surgical attendance, it would be well for
them to inquire ifthere isa physician who is competent
to attend them, and who understands the application of
medicine, and whose Scientific Attainments in his profess.
ion, and whose age and experience entitle him to-your
confidence, Considering these things, Dr, Chas. H. Tozer
has concluded to inform you that are afflicted, advertising
his place of business, stating that he has been a successful
practitioner for over twenty-five years, and has
Attended and Cured Hundreds,
when they have been considered by other physicians and
have been pronounced by them past reeovery, Therefore
you may rely upon him as one in whom secresy and the
utmost confidenee can be placed.
Dr, C. H, 'T. would invite all that are afflicted to call on
him and if he does not administer for them there will be no
charge made, Let no false delicacy prevent you, but apply immediately, and save yourself from the dreadful consequences which must follow those who neglect to receive
attendance,
Dr. C. H. Tozer’s office is on 6th street, near the Belvidere Hotel; between J and K streets, His rooms are so arranged that the Doctor can be consulted without the fear
