ian cherie SA SMe Be ce LOCAL MATTERS, Town Finances—We publish in another column the report of the Trustees showing the receipts and expenditures of the town government for the past six months. The total receipts during that period, it will be observed, was $1,343 00; the total expenditures $1,928 25. But a small portion of the property tax for the current year is included in the receipts, while the expenses are the same as usual. The total expenses for the year ending in May, will not be far from $4,000; and unless something should occur calling for unusual expenditures, the town by that time will be nearly free of debt. The property tax for the current year is . now due, and the bulk of it will doubtless be paid on or before the third Monday in this month, asextra costs willbe charged on all. taxes unpaid at that time. THE CAMBRIAN SonGstTERS.—This company gavean entertainment at the Nevada Theater yesterday evening, according to announcement. The audience was not large, but we presume enough was realized to pay expenses. The singing was very ordinary, and did notrise above what might be expected ata country school exhibition. The gentlemen are extremely awkward on the stage, and their style of music is not calculated to please an audience. The ladies have good voices, and while singing in the drawing-room and church choir doubtless excel; but as Artemas Ward would say, stage singing is not their forte. last, a tombstone was left with the firm of Gregory & Boring, of this place, on which was inscribed the name of Wm. Burkholder, who died March 17th, 1860, aged 50 years and 11 days. It was brought up from Marysville by . McCue’s stage, the driver stating that the own. er would call for it in a few days; but it still remains with Gregory & Boring, and was probably sent here by mistake. Should this item . meet the eye of the owner, or any person acquainted with the deceased, they will know} what has become of the tombstone. AN Owner WANTED.—Some time in July . . IMPORTANT RepvctTions.—Block & Co. have reduced the price of caps and clothing, an important item to those who are short of funds ; Liebert has reduced the price of pictures, a very important item, also, to those who flatter . themselves they look well on pasteboard or glass ; but the most important reduction for 1861, is that made by Wheeler & Wilson on sewing machines, which . have become almost indispensible for family . use, are now sold at a reduction of twenty-five per cent on the former prices. These machines, TRAVELING.—Notwithstanding the storms have been unusually severe this winter, the Sacramento stages have reached Nevada regularly every evening, and at an earlier hour than usual at this time of year, andthe travel in the} mountains above here has not been interrupted to the extent it has during past winters. The increased facilities for winter travel are fprinci. pally owing to the improvements made on the . roads. Book BiInpING.—We regret to learn that . Mr. Frank Leonard is about to give up his bus. iness of book binding. It isa great conveni-. ence in a county like Nevada to have an establishment of the kind, as people are thereby induced to have bound their magazines, papers, ete., which would otherwise be destroyed. But the business is not sufficient to warrant keeping up such an establishment. WASHINGTON MONUMENT BALi.—We understand that a number of ladies of this place, who have taken an interest in procuring subscriptions for the Washington Monument, have agreed to meet next Monday evening, to make the preliminary arrangements for a ball to be . given for the benefit of the fund. It is propos. ed to have the ball come off on the anniversary of Washington’s birth, February 22d. THEATRICAL.—Mrs. Julia Dean Hayne is! the financial crisis, says a Philadelphia correspondent of the San Francisco Mirror, and the threatened revolution in the South, the rich and the fashionable are as gay as ever. Parties and balls light up velvet carpeted parlors, and diamonds sparkle beneath blazing chandeliers. Who feels the grasp of poverty when music gives lightness to the foot? Who thinks of bis neighbor’s ills when the wine cup diffuses its gladness? When want is most general how prove we are to be extravagant. Youo Secenvep.—The Bee has been informed that the county of Yolo has determined to secede from the State of California, and that a prominent eitizen, late of Sacramento, has been appointed Minister to the Penitentiary, and that no person is allowed to cross the bridge from the Sacramento side without a passport. OLE Agent for TILTON & McF ND’S celebrated Fire-Proof and Burglar Safes, This safe is well known in the market for its unsur—_ fire-proof quality, hayng withstood in California, as wellas in the East, the hottest fires known. We can refer to endless certificates from parties in our mining towns, where these safes have been subjected to the most severe tests of its fire-proof qualities. The Safes are secured by our Combination Lock. This Lock is in every respect the most secure one in use; it requires the key and combination to open the Safe.
