situa, <r pe Dana aso atl eee is sen 4 . bee: pens cep sna Me THE FUNERAL OF THE YEAR. BY JAMES RISTINE. The chariot wheela of time Have borne another year Adown the magty tf past, With many & sig’ and tear, And o’er the winter’s path, The Peay vephyrs , t bis grim aporoach, Ate charms of ature pale. Oh! like the wailing winds That skim along the snow, Where many a lovely flower Lies moulderiug below, Come whisperings ead and drear From memory’s waking lyre, When the faded and the gone, The mournful soul inspire. O’er the desert of the heart Float the thoughts of other years, As the land winds o’er the deep The draoping railor cheers, Recalling treshning bloom To the thin and pallid cheek, While of other, fairer climes, With enchanting voice they speak. Axorurr Loa MoxtEz.—Miss Kate Newton, a very beantiful young lady, attached to the company of the Richmond (Va.) Theater, has adopted the Lola Montez tactics, and fights ber own battles. It seems that a gentleman had the assurance to send her his portrait, accompanied by an offensive letter, informing the lady that he would occupy a certain seatin the theater on the aforesaid night, and she might, therefore, recognize him. Miss N., sure enough, did recognize bim, and when the performance was over, she met the ‘gay Lothario’ at the door of the theater, and inquired if ho was the person who sent the letter, With a face radiant with smiles at the anticipation of a pleasant tete-a-tete, he replied he was the individual ; whereupon Miss N., instantl drew a cowhide, which she had concealed, and whaled him incontinently, until he took to his heels and escaped. When Miss N. next appeared on the stage she was greeted by round after round of applause, Trun Takes tHE Concere out or Us.— An old Greek philosopher once said: “When 1 was a child I thought I knew all things; now that I am an old man I discover that I am asignorant asachild.”’ A late writer Hays: ‘Time does take the buckram out of a man and the self suffleiency with which we begin life leaves us as we advance into the deeper waters of existence. John Wesley says —When I was young, I was sure of everything; in a few years, having been mistaken a thousand times, I was not half so eure of most things as I was before. At present [am hardly sure of anything but what God has revealed to man,” Witty anp Severs.—The Rey. A. 8, Laurie had occasion to exchange pulpits with the Rev, E. H. Chapin, of New York, Many members of Mr, Chapin’s congregation have an idea that nobody else can preach a sermon as well as their pastor, and when they enter their churcb, and find a stranger occupying his place, they are apt to tarn aod go out, So it happened on this occasion that not a few persons departed, and others were op the point of doing so, when Mr. Laurie arose, bymn book in hand, and gravely remarked; “All those who came here to worship BE, H. Chapin will have an opportunity to retire, and those who came to worship the Everlasting God will please unite in singing the following bymn.’’ A Drvive Ixstitution.—A congregation in Boston, on Thanksgiving Day, were considerably astonished, if not particularly edified, by a sermon from Rev, Nehemiah Adams, ye slavery as a divine institution. It would not be strange if we should next hear that some preacher in Charleston, S. C., had aseerted that slavery is not a divine institution, Clerical men have a wonderful faculty of making the Divinity shoulder ps sort of human institution that pleases them, —— Women are called the “softer sex’? because they are so easily humbugged. Out of one hundred girls, ninety-nine would prefer ostentation to bappiness—a dandy husband to a mechanic. EMPIRE MEAT MARKET!! When a cure is guaranteed in all stages of SECRET DISEASES. Self-abuse, Nervous Debility, Strictures, Gleet, Gravel Diabetes, Diseases of the Kidneys and Bladder, Mercurial Rheumatism, Serofula, Pains in the Bones and Ankles, Diseases of the Lungs, Throat, Nose and Eyes, Ulcers upon the Body or Limbs, Cancers, Dropsy, Epileptic Fits, St. Vitus’ Dance, and all Diseases arising from a derangement of the Sexual Organs. Such as Nervous Trembling, Loss of memory, Loss of Power, General Weakness, Dimness of Vision. with sculiar spots appearing before the eyes, Loss of Sight, akefulness, Dyspepsia, Liver Diseases, Eruptions upon the Face, Pain in the Back and Head, Female Irregularities, and allimproper discharges of both sexes, It matters not from what cause the disease originated, however long standing or obstinate the case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has baffled the skill of . eminent physicians and resisted all their means ot cure, The medicines prescribed are pleasant, with-. out odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and free from mercury or balsam. During fifteen years of practice, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many thousands, who, in the last stages éf the above men tioned diseases, had been given up to die by their physicians, which warrants mein promising to the affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, a perfect and speedy cure, Private diseases are the yvreatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause of Consumption, Serofula, and many other diseases, and should be a terror to the human family. A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected, « majority of the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but rain the constitution, filling the system with mercury, which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid consumption. But should the disease and the treatment not cause death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief existance of suffering, and consigning them to an early grave, SELP-AnvseE is another formidable enemy to health, for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes 80 destructive a drain upon the system, drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years of suffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the proper developement of the system, disqualifies for marriage, society, business, and all earthly bappiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train of evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy cure can be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous practices my patients can be restored to robust, vigorous health, Irregelarities, and all diseases of males and females, treated on principles established by fifteen years of practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most remarkable cures.
