gear THE NIGHT TIME. Night folds her holy mantle o’er A clear and calm November day, ‘And far across the dusky plain, The falling shadows pass away. The benedictions of the hour Fall softly o’er the homes of men, Rest comes, and peaceful quiet reigns, Where lately din and toil have been, A Sabbath time for weary ones Where angel yoices whisper low, And through the chambers of the soul, Serener fancies come and go. Love's lighted vestals purer barn, Hope, softly spreads her radiant wing, And memory weaves a magic spell Around each old familiar thing. The keenest sorrows we have known, Grow softened through the mist of years, And thoughts that crushed the spirit once, Now only start the quiet tears. From childhood’s scenes, and youth’s dear home, Our restless feet have wandered far, Yet lo! on yonder bending dome Still smiles the evening's changeless star. We've watched it, when the eastern hills Were robed with sunset’s purple hue, Break sudden, as some glorious dream, Upon the twillght’s deep’ning blue. Sweet twilight hour, with constant star Sat like on thy regal brow, We loved thee in life’s early years, We bless thy holy quiet now, How rue Porn Lives.—The present Pepe lives very simply; his court, though extremely splendid, is austerely regulated, and his privy purse is estimated at not more than 4,260 lKtoman dollars per aunum, Among the thousand chambers of the Vatiean, few, and those not the largest, are reserved for his residence, In the Qoirinal Palace be has a finer euite ; but bis villa on . the lake Albano, and that lately purchased at Porto d' Anzio, are surpassed by many country seats of gentlemen in Kngland. He bolds no jJevees, but accese to him is easy for persons of almost every rank, with no other requirements as to etiquette of costume than a black evening dress without gloves, and the veil for females. He daily celebrates mass in bis private chapel, aod attends another mass said by a chaplain ; dedicates the entire morning, till an ear) dinner, to his duties ; then drives out’ and, when beyond the city walls, usually walks; returos again to occupy his hours tilla rather late supper in endless engagements, among which, audiences, official and private, are prominent ; and it is said his present holiness has literally spent the day till seven P. M., in one series of receptions. The household is at present composed of the cardinal, the secretary of state, a major domo, # maestro di camera, an auditor, the mastro of the second palace, ten private chamberlains, 102 ge supernumerary chamberJains, all, like the former, of prelatical rank. Men with Tairs,—For the thousandth time since Pliny, the story of the existence of a race of men with tails has again been set afloat. A Dutch journal, the Vereeniging Christelijke Stemmen, for September, coutalus a lengthy acoount of the native population of Borneo. The writer asserts that the Poonangs, a race inhabitiug large tracts in the interior of the Island, are all adorned with tail, A Mr. Van Houtryp, while ia the Borneo province, recently, saw and examined three of these Poonangs. He came to the conclusion that their caudal appendages, which are deecribed as from three to five ioches in length, hard, stiff, and oy immovable, are neither a deformity nor the result of disease, gbut are a genuine and general characteristic of the race. Some are to be caught and sent to Holland, Divine anp Human Foraivenrss.—A celebrated drugyist of San Francisco being on the point of death, sent for Dr. C., who was the family physician, ©, having prescribed, was about to take bis leave, when the druggist called him to his bedside, and ‘said: “Doctor, I bave something weighing heavily on my mind; several years ago Ton in the habit of adulterating my drugs, and I am now apprehensive that I will not be pardoned: “Well,’’ said the doctor, “God Almighty is merciful, and may forgive you; but if I were he, I’d see you d——d first.”’ Tue Creation.—Baron Bunson, in bis a work, “Egypt’s Place in Universai fistory,”’ fixes the creation of the world at about the year B. C. 19,752. He determines also, that the flood occurred about the year B.C. 9252, He eays that the Egyptians knew nothing of the Deluge, “the climate center of which was in the tenth millenium B. C., but which was assuredly many bundred years in operation,” EMPIRE MEAT MARKET!!
