{ ‘ a 7 4 + this city resides a buxom widow, fat, fair and—say twenty-five, who has for cometime past, been receiving the addresses of two ardent swains, each of whom, it appears, had someliow or otber got the idea in his head that he stood highest in the affections of thefairwidow. Buth gentlemen meditated matrimofy, and, we believe, had employed the services of a certain Justice of the Peace to make himself and his fair inamorata bone of one bone and partakers of the same dish of grucl, At the a ay time the individual specimen of a class described by Jaqnes as always possessing a fair round abdomen with good eapon lined, repaired to the house rendered an Eden by the presence of the widow, and there found, in place of one happy bridegroom, two gentlemen both claiming that distinguished honor. A secene ensued, The Grand Jary being in.session, of course the lady could uot marry both of her admirers in the pres ence of witnesses, Both lovers were determined. One swore that he would. stand i: the relation of husband to the widow that evening or he would—leave town, The other swore, with a great round oath, that he would marry her or die. Dogberry left, and how matters were arranged for that evening be tells us he had not the most remote idea, but this we do know; the next day one of the lovers left town, and that evening the other married the widow.— [Yreka Journal. “Sentina AN Erenon.’’—When Napoleon took possession of Holland he visited Dordt, and, as was usual with him, made numerous and minute inquiries regarding the imports and general commerce of the place. Among others, he addressed abruptly Mr. Gerrard Mauritz, afterwards British consul at Dordt, asking bim, “Well, what number of windmills bave we here?’ “Five hundred, sire,’ was ag inconsiderately and as abruptly answered. ‘‘Aod what number of cubic feet of timber arrive here annually?” upon which Mr. Mauritz, as incorrectly, but as promptly, named a roand number. his emartness, which Napoleon took for intelligence, so much pleased him, that the next day the Emperor's secretary waited upon Mr. Manritz with the order of the Legion of Honor, and a most complimentary letter, Mr, Mauritz had previously been informed by a friend who knew Napoleon’s temper, that he must not seem to hesitate, or even consider when addressed, or yasked a question by the emperor; but, right or wrong, speak frankly, boldly, and with confidence. Mr. Mauritz took and profited by the bint. In fact, Napoleon had asked the burgomaster a question about the number of criminals annually convicted at Dordt, and while the magistrate was calculating and thinking, in order to answer correctly, Napoleon turned round upon his heel, and, with rather supercillions curl of the lip, suddenly asked, and was answered the questions above mentioned.—[Life of Napoleon, i Lookiva Pror.e iy tan Face,—I bave known a vast quantity of nonsense talked about bad men not looking you in the fAce. Don’t trast that conventional idea, Dishonesty will stare honesty out of countenance any day in the week, if there is anything to be got by it.—-[All the Year Round. One ov Tue Partinatons.—A funetionary in Downieville grew indignant over the account of Coleman’s being stabbed at the Octagon House, Sacramento, Said he, “There it goes! we see the pertinicious influence of Republicanism; a white man boarding with them ‘ere octagons.’’—[Sierra Democrat.
