or two of the new regiments be enlisted in California, as soon as they are authorized to be
raised; as he designs moving on Utah with three
columns—from the Plains, from Oregon, and
from California, at the same time. He also
contemplates making the Grand Caiion of the
Colorado the base of operations from the Pacific side.

confirmed by the Senate, Gov. Walker sent in
his resignation as Governor of Kansas, acoompanied by a letter defending his course, The
document isan able ene, and maintaius that)
the Kansas Constitution should have been submitted entire to the people. The news from
Kansas indicates that a large majority of the)
people are opposed to the Lecompton Coastitution, aud many believe that they will uot allow .
the election to be held for the purpose of voting
on the slavery clause,
EaktTuqtake IN THE East.—A shock of an
earthquake was felt in Lewisburg, Greenbrier
county, Va., about 10 o’cloék, Dec. 3d. The
same moment a very large land-slide took place
on the Greenbrier river near Edgar’s mill, and
about the same time the whole end of a moun-.

smart shock of an earthquake was felt at Charles.

Dreaprut Strampoat DisasteR,—The steamer .
Col. Edwards, while on her way from Upper Red

the furniture, three valuable libraries, the extensive laboratories, the chemical apparatus, and
a number of very important papers, were also
consumed. The tire is supposed to have been
the work ef an incendiary.
Tux Mormon War.—The War Department is
said to be crowded with applicants from every
section of the country for commissions in the

Journal, fell from a fourth story wiudow of the
east end of the Carolina Hotel, striking on the
railing of the steps leading up, on the outside,
to the second stury. the lower story being occupied by a store. He finally lit ou the pavement, aod when taken un was found to have had
his arm broken in two or three places, bis skull
fractured, and a number of other injuries. Whether he was immediately killed or not, we have .
not heard: certainly he did not long survive.
That his’death was the consequence of his own
act, and that it wasdone under the iafluence
of temporary derangement there ie no doubt.

some one holding by the hands te the base of
the window, and endeavoring, apparently, to
obtain a footing on the top of the blinds of the

anything, the person, Mr. Robinson, as it appears, dropped, falling as we have stated. The
door of his room was locked. It would appear

hearing a rustliug inside I stepped to the window just in time to see a herd of rats making .
their escape up a narrow flight of stairs, I)
then turned to survey the other side of the street. .
The first house . took tor a “bean-poker estab.

large raised letters the Omega House; thinking .
this was the place, I crossed over. This too, .
was bolted, and windows boarded up with shakes.
I was quite easy yet, thinking I would fiad ac. commedations at the restaurant. But there
. I found [hud gotinte the wrong pew, it
being nothing more than a bit whiskey shop. I
, here asked if there was any place that a man
could get something to eat, and a bed for the .
night. The loug looked for house was pointed
out tome. I was struck by the singular appearance of the front room, it being about 20
by 30 feet. a bar iu one corner, a small stove in
the opposite, a few benches aud a card table, I
got a glimpse of two or three women as they
were preparing supper. Supper was over in
. good time, aud mine host furnished me with a)
teamster’s regalia, whichI lighted, buttoned
the top button of my overcoat and set out to,
view the fashions, There being no moon I}
could scarcely see two feet in advance of my
face; saw three or four glimmering lights; !
the first proved to be a family cottage, the othersa meat market and a miner’s cabin, I kept
om down street for some ways, thinking I would
soon come to some place of public resort ; but. .
all at onee.I bad my brain jostled and thoughts

stumps, loge, rocks, &c., all of which endangerI was somewhat surprised on my arrival to tind
the room crowded, a Piker with aa old fiddle,
the landlady and two girls and partners, with
,tworusty looking sort of fellows to make up
the set, on the floor, and just ready to join pads
and circle to the left. The old Jady here hesitated, not liking the two “ronghs’’ that were .
on the side, but she was overruled and the
; dance wenton. When out, all promenaded to
the bar, took their “dead-eye,’’ and then the
ery of fill up the set boys, and the dance goes
on,’ &c. I soon got tired of this and called
for my bed. Just asI had fairly got to sleep,
I was awakened by a devil of a noise down below—thought the house was on fire—was about
rushing ‘‘with the speed of an antelope’ down
stairs, when I heard, too plain to be mistaken,
the cursed song of “Old Bob Ridley, Ho!’* This
, was kept up for hours, with a stamping that .
could not be surpassed by a drove of stampeded .
buffaloes or Spanish cattle. The house was reduced to quietude about daylight, when I made .
my escape out of the back door and took break.
I am yet in town .
