LEANING OVER THE GATE,
On memory’s fitfal streamlet,
Oft the shadows of the past,
Float before my ’tranced vision,
As life’s tide is ebbing fast;
lam wandering in the moonlight,
And a fairy maid doth wait
For my coming near the farm house—
She is leaning o’er the gate.
She is fair as sammer’s sunshine,
That streams the hills at morn—
She is gentle as the west wind
That sways the autumn corn—
She is pure asare the angels ;
With a seraph she might mate—
The maiden at the farm house,
Who is leaning o’er the gate.
Her voice doth echo sweetly,
As the blast that fairy spirtes,
From their horas of burnished silver,
Blew when hunting with their knights.
Now she spies me by the hill-side—
Oh, ye gods! I bless the fate,
That led me near the farm house,
Where she’s leaning on the gate.
Her breath is sweet as essence
From the land oforient Ind ;
And her kiss a king might envy,
As her arms around me wind,
I return the gentle pressure,
Oh! my heart with joy’s elate,
But, by Heaven . there comes old Trueman
He is making for the gate
“Young man!’ (his voice is gentle
As the braying of an a8s)—
‘‘Yon’t be stuffin’ up my darter
With any more yer gass !”
My coat-tails cat the moonbeams,
‘And I curse my dev ilish fate,
For—I’m sitting by my fireside,
And I’am leaning o’er the grate]

summing up my impressions of this country
in a single paragraps.S
Climate—In Winter, the most disagreeable, cold and stormy this side of the pole;
in Summer, a bed of alkali dust, sifted upon
the ground by strong N, W. winds and heated almost to suffocation by the sand deserts
to the windward.
Soil—None.
Population—Consists of two classes—dogs
and gentlemen, It is the kennel to whieh
puppies of every stripe from California have
flocked; it is the Colchis to which every accomplished Jason has steered, in search of
the rowdy’s paradise; it is the adventurer’s
home, There will ere long be open war
between these two classes, aud one or the
other will be summarily expelled.
Staples—Gold and silver bars. Almost
every bill and mountain, from Humboldt to
Mono, is quartz capped and metal bellied—
penturies cannot exaust them,
Ladies—Few.
Women—in demand.
Tonacco Asroap.— Eugland consumes
anually about sixty million pounds of tobacco, The revenue from it for the past
ear amounted to the enormous sum of
$30,000,000, there being but one other article of foreign import, sugar, which yields
the Government a larger amount. But the
Government of France is still more interested in the tobacco question than that of
England, because in I
Srance it isa monopoly, which contributes $100,000,000 per annum to the Imperial Treasury. The United States supplies about two-fifths of all
the tobacco used in Europe, Of the 60,000,000 pounds required by England, she draws
from $0,000,000 pounds from the United
States, and we furnish from three-fourths
to four-fifths of all that is consumed by
France.
A Prorans Bisnor.—A Southern correspondent writes :
I think the Right Reverend Bishop General Polk, if some one has not slandered
him, sent a flag of truce to the devil, when
he laid aside the sword of the spirit and
took up carnal weapons of Jeff. Davis, and
has since fallen into the army in Flanders.
It is stated on the authority ofa gentleman
who was present, that when a note of inquiry was sent down to Columbus by General Grant, after the fight at Belmont, in
which the action was mentioned as a “skirmish,’’ the Bishop General, on reading it
exclaimed, “skirmish, bell and damnation !
I'd like to know what he calls a battle.”
