WORDS. BY OLIVE K. PAINE, Oh, how oft the fount of feeling Shrined within the soul is stirred, By the echo, softly stealing, Of a dear, remembered word. Somewhere in the past ’twas spoken, Welling up from some true heart, And till life’s last spell is broken, It will ne’er from memory part. Kind words for the orphaned wanderer Kind words for the child of sin, Angels at the heart’s closed portals Knock they but to enter in. Like soft tones of music floating O’er the summer-crested wave, Glide they down life’s billows lighting E’en the terrors of the grave. Bitter words like poisoned arrows, Pierce the heart with cruel pain; Wounds by those we love inflicted, Time can never heal again, Oft o’er solitude they’re thrilling, In the eye sad tears are stirred; Gone the heart-light—dim the shadows— Caused by harsh and bitter words. foft words when the clouds of anger Burst in storms about thy way; Saith a holy ancient volume, These shall turn the wrath away. Soft words o’er the burdened — Steal like dew at hush of night Weaving in life’s changeful tissue, Golden threads of cheering light. Words of love, so true and tender, Tones of human sympathy, Dim were earth, reft of the beauty— Sad were life unblest by thee— Words of love! oh, let them gladden Vale and mount, and ocean wide, From each heart and lip re-echo, Brighten every home fireside. The Broderick Monument Fund, ™ The Peoples’ Committee, appointed in the fall of 1859, to collect money throughout the State for the erection of a suitable monument to the late Senator Broderick, have realized up to this time a little upwards of $6,000, which is deposited with the Savings and Loan Society, where itis earning something over $60 per month, Numerous plans have been submitted to the Committee on Models for the proposed monument, but as yet no one has been decided upon. It is the general desire to let the fund continue to accumulate, by interest and donations, for awhile longer. The increase, however, is but trifling. We have heard it suggested that the Committee should decide not to erect the monument until the year 1865, and that the money, being safely invested, could be compounding interest, and would amount to a large sum by that time. The name and fame of Broderick are historical with California, and must, at any rate, fill a wide epace on the pages of our future chronicles. It needs, then, no particular haste in the erection of a monument, A matter of four or five years is not material in the case, and atthe expiration of that time the fund may have accumulated enough to build a memorial worthier the great departed Californian than what can now be done for $6,000. Another plan isto commence the monument now, with the funds already in hand, but upooa plan that will amount, when completed, to $20,000, and trust to public and private donations hereafter to complete it, agin the case of Bunker Hill monument and other public structures. Of the two plans we think the postponement the most practicable. The fund will then be earning money, and donations are as likely to be made as for a half-finished work. Senater Broderick’s grave is now surrounded by a nest iron railing, and the coffin has been inclosed in a deep brick vault, arched over, and intended to be beTatts the centre of the future mooument.— ta. Portrarr or Caraartye Il.—In the coming volume of Bancroft’s History will appear the following portrait of Catharine II. of Russia: The affairs of the united colonies were then under discussion in the heart of the Russian empire, the ancient city of Moscow, at the Court of Catharine If, The ruling opinion in Russia demanded the conceutration of all power in one band, From the moment the Empress set her foot on Russian soil, it became her fixed purpose to seize the absolute sway and govern alone, Though she mixed trifling pastime with application to business, and for her recreation sought the company of the young and the very gay, she far excelled those around her in indastry and knowledge. Frederic said of ber, that she had an infinity of talent, and nv religion; yet she wentover to the Greek Church and played the devotee. Distinguished for vivacity of thought and judgment, for the most laborious attention to affairs, very proud of the greatness and power of her empire, ber intercourse with all ber subjects was marked by mildness and incomparable grace; and she made all credible exertions, as a monarch, to be useful even to the meanest, to benefit the future as well as the present age. Tragedy, comedy, music, wearied her; she had no taste but to build, or to regulate her court; no passion but to rule ana to make a great name; and this led her to undertake too much herself, without sufficient aid from her ministers, In the crowd of the ambitious, who were all eager for advancement or favor, she compared hereelf toa hare hunted by many hounds; and among an unscrupulous nobility in the land which was not that of her birth, she was haunted by a feeling of insecurity, and revealed a secret unrest and discontent of soul. But those around her were not offended at the completeness with which she belonged to a century representing the supremacy of the senses; the spiritual life that diffused itself over her form wasa refinement of delight in physical pleasure; the blandishments of her manner, the smiles on her face, the flowers on her breast, covered fiery passions that coursed riotously through her veins. a nnn em lp WHITHER CL i CHEAP JOHN’S® HE ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL UNDERSELL ANY HOUSE IN NEVADA COUNTY.
