to try a bath. They had no swimming rig with
them, but fortunately there was a cozy nook
on either side of a little rocky promontory which
projected into the Sound several rods beyond
the main margin. The gentleman modestly retired to the further side of this natural screen,
and the lady divested herself of her clothing
without a bit of fear that he would incur her
Diana-like indignation ; his honor being abeve
suspicien, and her own being sans peur et sans
reproche. Soon she heard him plashing in the
water on the other side, and as there was no
harm in using their tongues, although they
must not use their eyes, she cried eut to him
cheerily as she rose like a naiad from the wave,
and they had quite a social time of it, in spite
of their separation. ‘“Wasn’t it beautiful ?”’
“Yes, it was ‘glorious.’ ”’
But, unfortunately for them, a small but
quick-witted and mischievous boy—a sort of
marine [ke Partingvon—without being seen himself, sawitall, Ho had been fishing upon a
shelf of rock, at the extreme end of the promontory, and, not having very good luck, had
fallen into a sleep, from which he was awakened by their exclamations of delight. There are
some youthful minds to which the conception
of a roguish trick or practical joke is as inevitable as lying. Unhappily, this lad was one of
them. From the point where he lay he ceuld,
with only a slight movement of his body, see
the gentleman on one side of the ledge and the
lady on the other ; and not far away from eaoh
thelr respeotive er of clothing. What a jolly
good joke, he thought te himself, it would be to
go and hide their clothes! or, still better, to
change one pile for the other. With him to devise was to execute, and ho went fearlessly
about it, yet with great eaution, least he should
be discovered and his fun spoiled. Watching
his opportunity, and taking advantage of their
absorption in what they were doing, the little
rogue managed by consumate ability to effect
the ominous exchange in the situation ef the
unsuspecting bathers’ garments, and then stole
away frem the scene, Ashe ran bebind a sandhill his long shadow between her and the sinking sun attracted the lady’s notice, and in some
trepidation she hastened to don her apparel.
Taucy her ‘‘feelinks’’ on finding, not her own
clothes, but the eoat, hat, vest, and other articles, in extenso, of the gentleman on the other
side ef the promontory! How could it have
happened, and what was to be done? Was that
fearfully long shudow some spirit of the sea or
shore, who offended at her intrusion upen his
solitude, had resorted to this method of punishing her temerity? It were better to imagine
her situation thau attempt to describe it,
In the meantime the gentleman, too, repaired to the shore to drese, Speechless astonishment was depicted in his countenance as it fell
upon aheap of woman’s clothing. “What in
thunder,’ he muttered to himself, “does this
mean? Is the place turned around or am I crazy?’ Im the greatest perplexity he took up
oue article of feminine apparel after another to
the number of about thirty, letting one after
another drop again upon the rock where he
stood, with many a half-audible ejaculation of
wonder, There was no doubt in his mind as to
whom the things belonged; but how did they
et there, and where were his own clothes ?—
ith ene arm akimbe, he pressed his other
hand upon his forehead to collect his bewildered senses, little thinking that the mischievous
elf who was the author of his embarrassment
was laughing at him from behind the sand-bill.
After a few moments of hesitation, the gentleman shouted to his lady-love the awkward
intelligence, aud in return was informed that
his clothes lay at her feet. All that was to Le
done was to exchange the lots; bit how, in the
name of delicacy, was that consummation, so
devoutly wished, to be effected? The sun was
now down, but it was net dark yet. Finally, it
was arranged that the lady should veuture Into
the water, with her eyes seaward, while the lover should exchange the clothes and return to his
side of the rocks, Unfortunately, just ashe was
about to cut around to the other side to perform that duty, he caught sight of a couple of
young ladies not far off, and he felt compelled
to retreat precipitately to his place again. His
discomfitted companion would have then come
out hastily and called to the ladies for their
help, but they were distant, aud between herself and them she saw a boy passing along.—
To cut the story short, the “peculiarly unpleasant naerns lasted until the young lady
felt it necessary, to save herself from being
chilled to death, to attire herself in her lover’s
clothing. He, on his part, put her garments to
the same use for his own benefit, and a pretty
ood fit it was; for the two friends were about
the same size, aud but for the discrepenoy of a
full beard, be might in a less dusky light than
then prevailed, have passed for a lady. It was
his intention, in some way or anether, he hardly knew how, to rectify the matter immediately; but when he had ventured to rejoin his
laughing and blushing sweetheart, he saw the
mischievous bey a little distance off, with a grin
on his impish countenance, closely watching
their motions. Quickly putting a handkerchief
to nis face to conceal his tell-tale beard, the gene
tleman tuok the lady’s arm, and they sauntered on the shore until it was dark, then entered
the hotel as privately as possible, and making
the best of their way to their respective rooms,
jm no time in donning more appropriate habilments,
His onty Request.—“Our reporter’ visited
Orlinski on the night of his capture. He has
suffered much durivg his wanderings, but be
could have held out much longer had he not
been weakened by a regular perusal of the daily
papers, which he contrived to take from the
doors where they were left by the carriers, His
last words to our reporter, when he left him,
were in the Polish language, which we translate: “I have only one request to make of the
press. Let them speak of me as they will. Let
them rob me of my good name; but for heaven's
sake, let them agree on some one way of spelling it.” His head dropped, and he returned to
the mutton provided in ‘his station house banquet.—[Wide West. :

GENERAL TONIC FOR THE SYSTEM
IT IS UNRIVALLED.
The various diseases which have their imprints on the
surface of the body, may be compared to signals of distress
thrown out by Nature to indicate that the vital organization within needs cleansing and purift ing.
The ancients believed that animal life existed in the
blood, It is at least certain that
HEALTH DEPENDS
Upon the runrry of that fuid. Uf the skin is in an unnatural state, as in Scrofula, Leprosy, and all Uleerous
Diseases, it is evident that the vessels which ramify over
the surface of the body must be charged with diseased
blood ; and if so, the whole volume of blood, venous and
arterial, is impure, Before a cure ean bo effected there
must be @ purification of the vital stream, The great object, therefore, is to ascertain what remedies will act most
directly upon the constituents of the blood when in the
act of combination, Experience, observation, and a cloud
of witnesses, establish the fact that this preparation is at
the very head of this class, and will soon restore the circu— to a healthy state by eradicating the elements of
disease,
STILL FURTHER TESTIMONY.
West Kinuinetey, Conn., June 12th, 1857,
Messrs, A. B. & D, Sanna: Gentlemen,-—The following
case came under my observation, in which your Sarsaparilla effected the cure of a severe case of Chronic Rheumatism, The patient, Mr, Joseph K. Green, has been afflicted
with rheumatism for years by turns, which sometimes was
attended with fever, and put on an acute form in a few
days. He used various remedies, under the advice of his
popeieian, which produced but partial relief; and in reply
to his inquiry, if something could not be done to effee
pormanens cure, I advised him to use your Sarsaparilla.
fe accordingly commenced its use, and the effect was so .
marked that le was able to sleep the first night comparatively free from pain, He ceothnel it, and
taken twelve bottles he was entirely free from the disease,
and has remained so since, being able to pursue his busihess, and is now a representative for the town of Brooklyn
in our Legislature, Very respectfully yours,

can rely upon a cure.
DR. TOZER has, it is well known, taken patients from

READ AND REFLECT.
R, CHARLES H, TOZER’S CARD to the aMlicted of California, In approaching any new course of systematic inquiry, there are certain points concerning which the
inquirer should always be careful to satisfy himelf He
should comprehend distinetly what the subject of inquiry
is—Health and Diseases,
If we can form and fix in our minds a clear conception
of the state of Health, we shall have no difficulty in understanding what was meant by Disease. But beyond, though
not above, these objeets of investigation of the human
body, we have another and stillnobler end, It is to lay
before you in such plain terms that you cannot be mistaken and will know where to apply for relief.
T use the word ‘disease’ generally, and before I speak of
the signs of particular diseases, it will be proper to take a
general view of symptoms, When a person is treubled or

Tn continuation of this subject, Dr. Young would say, .
that for the past ten years he has pursued the practice of
medicine in one of the largest cities in the United States,
with the highest success, and that his standing as a physician is without reproach, having at one time been a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania on venreal diseases,
Upon these considerations, Dr. Young has confidence in
introducing himself to the public, knowing that they will
sustain well earned merit.
The following are a few of the many testimonials which
haveappeared in the public journals within the last few
years:
[From the Boston Medical Journal.]
Although we are opposed to the system of advertising,
for good and sufficient reasons, still we deem it but justice .
to say that Dr. Young is one of the most industrious and .

The substtiber is pérsbridlly acquainted with Dr. Youug,

to his inerits as a practitioner.

Asa medical man it is the duty of every physician to
look at disease as it affects health and life, and his sole object should be to mitigate, as far as lies in his power, the
bodily suffering. Human nature at best is but frail, all

Of all the ills that affect man, none are more terrible
than those of a private nature, Dreadful as itisin the

ONSTITUTIONAL DEBILITY,OR SEMInal weakness—Dr. J. C, YOUNG addresses those who
have injured themselves by private and improper indulgences in that secret and solitary habit, which ruins the body
and mind, untitting them for either business or society.
The following are some of the sad and melancholy effects
produced by the early habit of youth, viz ;
the back and limbs, pain in the head, dyspepsia, nervousness, irritability, symptoms of consumption &c.
MENTALLY, the fearful effects on the mind are more to
be dreaded. Loss of memory, confusion of ideas, depression of spirits, evil forebodings, aversion of socicty, selfdistrust, love of solitude, timidity, &c., are some of the
evils produced.
All persons who are afllicted with any ofthe above symptoms should not fail to call on Dr. Young and be at once
restored to perfect health, Let no false delicacy prevent
you, but apply immediately, and save yourself from the
dreadful and awful consequences of this terrible malady,—
Weakness of the organs immeeiately cured, and full vigor
restored.

all irregularities in females; together with all diseases of
Women and Children; also Nervousness, Palpitation af the
Heart, &e., &c.
Tersons affected with symptoms after being treated
should consult Dr. Young at once, as no disease is cured
unless the patient feels perfectly well. If there is a particle of disease left in the system, it will break out at some
future time, when least expected, or be handed down to
the innocent offspring. Persons who have been treated
with mercury should be very cautious in believing that
they are well, for it is a scientific fact that the mercury
will mingle with the venereal, and form a disease a great
deal worse than the original, All those who have reason
to think, by bad feelings, that they have thus been treated
should consult Dk. Youna, and he willexamime their cases
and tell them at once bow they stand,
