Eantnquake.— A pretty severe earthquake
shock was felt at Downileville on Wednesday afternoon, the 2d, of which the Deinoe
crat has the following account:
About fifteen minntes after tive o’clock
there wae heard a sound as if forty thousand
six mule teams were desperately rushing
over an immeararable continuity of plank
roads and shaking Mother Earth to her very
center, The course of the earthquake was
about northwest and southeast, aud lasted
about fifteen or twenty seconde, with a con
tinuous rambling sound, interspersed with
a number of distinct ebocks of such force ar
to shake hooser, move persone in their
chaire, make crockery dance, and thore who
lived in stone and brick houses to seek the
protection of out o’doors, As vearly ar we
can ascertain, there was not one person
frightened; everybody knew what it war,
(after it was over) and all agree that it was
the most severe exbibition of the kind ever
gotten up for the benefit of the citizens of
this locality and vicinity. Orear informs
us it wae felt at Foreat City about three
minutes after passing bere—but Nevada,
Maryeville and Camptonville were undis
tnt bed, so we conclude it was purely a local
affair, got up either in bonor of the Yuba
Gap road enterprise or the Fourth of
July.
Mrererious Deatu.—Jobn Igo, a miner,
born of Irish parents, and aged about forty

him, when he learned to his horror, that
Igo was dead. He examined him and dis
covered in the left breast a gun or pistol
shot wonnd, and on looking around, found
an empty single-barreled pistol lying on the
floor of the cabin. How deceased came by
the fatal shot is, of course, wrapt in mystery. His friends think be did not shoot
himeelf purposely, as be was known to bave
been easy going and good natured, and it
is euppored he had been examining the
cock of the pistol in a careless way, when
it was discharged accideotally.—(Sierra
