No. 47 Broad st., & 55 Pine rt, banner of the Grand Lodge was borne in front of the Masons The procession, head ed by the band from the Presidio, marched through Kenroy to California, to Montgome ery, to the corner ef Jacksou, when the Pioneers opened ranks and the Masonic fra ternity passed throngh and took its position ou the platform whieh covers the founda tion of the new Tall The stone was ready to lower in ite place, and the corn, wine and oil and other insignia of masonry. were in their proper places, aud the platform, ac companied with the representatives of the three great lights of Masonry —three tapers set ko as to forma triangle, On ascending the platform Dr TH. M. Gray, President of the Pioneerg, delivered a short address, and wae followed by the Grand Chaplain in a prayer, The oration was then delivered by W B Farw tl, Esq. After the oration the ensket containing the bistory of the Pioneer Sccicty, cames of its members, and various other articles, was deposited in the cavity of the corver stone; and then ander the supervision of Grand Mater Belcher, of Yuba conuty, the stone was placed in position accom; anied by all the rites of Masonry, A very large crowd was in attendance to witness the laying of the corner stone of the Hall which is to perpetnate the history of the Pioneers of the Pacitic Empire.—(S. F. Journal, 7th inet Eantnquake.— A pretty severe earthquake shock was felt at Downileville on Wednesday afternoon, the 2d, of which the Deinoe crat has the following account: About fifteen minntes after tive o’clock there wae heard a sound as if forty thousand six mule teams were desperately rushing over an immeararable continuity of plank roads and shaking Mother Earth to her very center, The course of the earthquake was about northwest and southeast, aud lasted about fifteen or twenty seconde, with a con tinuous rambling sound, interspersed with a number of distinct ebocks of such force ar to shake hooser, move persone in their chaire, make crockery dance, and thore who lived in stone and brick houses to seek the protection of out o’doors, As vearly ar we can ascertain, there was not one person frightened; everybody knew what it war, (after it was over) and all agree that it was the most severe exbibition of the kind ever gotten up for the benefit of the citizens of this locality and vicinity. Orear informs us it wae felt at Foreat City about three minutes after passing bere—but Nevada, Maryeville and Camptonville were undis tnt bed, so we conclude it was purely a local affair, got up either in bonor of the Yuba Gap road enterprise or the Fourth of July. Mrererious Deatu.—Jobn Igo, a miner, born of Irish parents, and aged about forty veare, was found dead in his cabin, near Goodyear’s Bar, on Wednerday lart, His partner, who bad been absent during the afternoon, returning home io the eveuing, noticed deceased in bed in a partially sit ting posture, and at the time, took bim to be asleep. After preparing supper be called him but conld get no answer. He approached the bed and took huld to aroure him, when he learned to his horror, that Igo was dead. He examined him and dis covered in the left breast a gun or pistol shot wonnd, and on looking around, found an empty single-barreled pistol lying on the floor of the cabin. How deceased came by the fatal shot is, of course, wrapt in mystery. His friends think be did not shoot himeelf purposely, as be was known to bave been easy going and good natured, and it is euppored he had been examining the cock of the pistol in a careless way, when it was discharged accideotally.—(Sierra Democrat. Deatu or Junox Lotr.—Hon. Peter Lott, formerly Superintendent of the Mint. at San Francisco, and of late holding the position ot American Cousul at Tebauntepec, Mexico, died at that place on the 10th of Marob of congestion of the bowels, A Geytieman having occasion to call upon an author, found him in his writing chamber. He remarked the great heat of the apartment, and enid that it was as “hot asan oven.” “So it ought to be,” replied the writer,“for it is bere I make my bread.” most decided sympathy with us. Prince Albert had always been the devoted friend of this country, and his last public act bad tween to modify a despate which the Min. istry bad prepared to send to Lord Lyona, The geoeral unfriendly sentiment cherished toward ux in the Old World, Mr, Weed attributed to the treacherous conduct of our diplomatic agente abroad, Full one. third of them had for years been engaged in preparing the public mind in Europe for the contemplated revolution, and a large number of Soatiern Congressmen had participated in the treason We in America could have but an imperfect idea of the condition of popular sentiment on thet Continent, Dr. Russell was one of our beat friends in England, He took every occasion to exprees sympathy for the North, Hespoke at the clabs, to members of Parliament, to everybody whom he encountered, He prenounced our army the finest in the world; the raw recruits were equal to veterans in other countries, Capitalists were surprised most of all, Our country was dismembered and its extinction threatened by civil war of moastrous proportions; yet we met all the ex. penses, and wereable to continue to do se for ten years without recurrence to foreiga contributions; and our funds had not depreeiated since the breaking out of hostilisier, There wae no other country in the world capable of euch a financial achievnent = America was truly independent Mr, Weed is never sanguine, and there le no doubt that he gave the darkest side of the picture, He told rather what publie sentiment wars in Europe a mouth ago, rince when it has undergone material change, in view of recent important Federal victories, England, especially, bas been very anxious to see our republicaa institutions full; but eince they are prog. ing themselves proof against destruction even by internal disorder, Jobn Bull wit soon be among the loudest to proclaim his ewmpathy and affection.—[Washiogtos Letter. A Unisia on THe Istimes.—At latest advices from Pavama there existed considerable excitement on the Isthmus, It appears that a number of Moxqaera’s men bad aerived at Aepinwall, and that wae sufticieat to throw Panama in a ferment. Senor de la Guardia, Governor of Panama, issued @ proclamation on the 10th, calling upon the citizens to rush to the defence of their Gresides, and hurl the invaders back, Numbers responded, and barricades were erected at the entrances to the city, The Panama Bulletin feared that the Commander of the American naval force in the harbor might take some hasty eiep which would compromise hie Government, and called upon him to ubserve the strictest neutrality in the civil broil, instancing the cousistency of euch a course with the requirements of our own Government io the more iaportant rebellion with which it has to deat. The whole affair seems a sort of tempest ia a,tenpot.—([Call, Weiouty Estatrx.—Mr. Weed, in bis last letter from Holland, «peak« of ao estate t® be divided, which is computed to be worth ninety-reven tunsin gold, The estate was left 92 yenre ago by a mirer, the profits of 100 years to go to the erection of suitable buildings for indigent females of good repute; and in the establishment and mainte nauce of a phirlorophical and scientific iastitution for the instruction of youth, and the benefits have been so applied, and now in eight years the estate isto go to the heire, who are 120 in number, and of course will come io for about Ove-cixths of a toa of gold each, Pustication or Wan News.— The Presldent has ordered a Military Commirsion to meet on the second Monday of July, fur the trial of editors ard correspondents of certaia journals which have violated the orders with respect to the publication of matier calowlated to give aid and information to the enemy.
