The Proposed Plan for Prospecting. The experience of miners in this locality during the last five years, gives us the fullest assurance, that millions of dollars of gold are burfed in the mountain ridges in our immediate vicinity. But it requires an outlay of capital to reach these leads, which small companies, or a single individual dare not venture, while success seems a mere chance, and failure, certain bankruptcy. The requisite outlay, however, may be easily furnished bya company of the size proposed in another column, (one hundred or more,) and should the prospecting by such a company prove a failure, no one would be broken or embarassed; while on the other hand, the discovery of a rich lead, would open a new field for industry, attract many customers for our merchants, again throng our streets, and restore wonted animation to our city. The company proposed, is intended only as a Prospecting Company, and will leave the working of the claims when the Jead is struck. The surface diggings are approaching exhaustion, and there must, sooner or later, be not only here, but everywhere in this State, combinations of men and money—a union of strength —like the one proposed, to prospect the mines, It is the only resort to ensure a return of the flush times of past years, when all business was a whirlpool of animation and fortunes followed close on dilligence and industry. Let the experiment of the Masmoru Company be made, and made, too, by our own citizens. The company is being formed, and we trust all interested in the permanent welfare of this place will unite, to give it a fair trial. Mr. Brovenrice’s Lerrern.—In our columns will be found the correspondence between Gen. Redington, Chairman of the Stute Central Committee, J. P. Dyer, Mayor of Sacramento, and Senator Broderick. The reply of Mr. Broderiek fe straightforward and to the point, and completely refutes the many base falsehoods which have been industriously circulated against him by political aud personal enemies. The assertions of the Sacramento Union, and kindred prints, that be is making war upon Mr. Buchanan’s administration, are the inventions of politfoal hucksters, and made for the purpose of reviving the old feuds in the party. It was through the influence of Mr. Broderick and his friends that our delegates to the late Cinoinnati Convention were instructed to vote for Mr. Buchanan, and by the intrigues of the very men that are now abusing Mr. Broderick those instructions were violated. If there are any Democrats in this county who imagine that Mr. Broderick is trying to create dissensions in the party, we advise them to read his letter. Fortaer From Sonona.—The San Francisco Globe says thes a gentleman who has recently arrived from Mexico, states that about sixty miles from Altar he met the company of Mexican te which the boy, spared in the brutal masaore of Crabb’s expedition, had been assigued. He appeared to be in good health, although his spirits were much depressed; ‘and altbough treated with comparative kindness by the soldiers, he wascompelied to carry a musket with them. The informant states that through fear of jeopardizing the poor fellow’s safety, he was restrained from attempting counsel or assistance. He seemed to be of the opinion, however, from what he gathered from some of the officers, that the boy would soon be diberated. ; : Soeanagerayeeen SASNIPESSaCh $asanark er <a LT 3 * ARGC A eta en aa Tue Exrecrep Comat. For some days past reports have been in cir-. diction of #01 e Germsa astronomers, a comet is azthy. It seems to Le admitted by his friends that there isa large deficiency in his department, and they attempt to account for it by saying that the gold has escaped up the chimney in the form of vapor. It is even said that some 5,000 ounces of gold has been found in the chimney and on the top of the adjoining houses, This explanation is anything but eatisfactory. If such large quantities of gold had on the roofsof houses in the neighborhood of the Mint, it would have been discovered long ago. It is thought that the expression “in a horn,” will now become obsolete, and give place to the more appropriate one, “up a chim, ney,”’ The matter of the alleged defalcation is now being investigated by Mr. J. Ross Brown, the financial agent of the government, and in the course of a few days we shall probably know the truth. The public are requested to “suspend their opinion” in the matter: until all the facta are brought to light. A Democratic Test.—In Sacramento, Sierra, and some other counties, the Democratic Central Committees have adopted the rule that no one shall be permitted to vote at the Democratic primary elections, who did not vote the Democratic ticket at the last election. Therule, we think, is @ good one, as it will bave the effect of keeping out of our ranks many disorganizing tricksters, and professional office-seekers, who may be disposed to join the party for no other purpose but to create dissensions. Those who really desire to join the party from principle will not refuse to do so in consequence of this test. In Nevada, the Central Committee have taken no action upon this subject, and we presume the question as to who are Democrats will be left to the judges of the primary elections, and to the Democratic voters of the several precincts where the delegates to the County Convention are held. Tue Casx ov F, V. Moorr.—We learn from the Grass Valley 7élegraph, that Mrs. Moore has been very active for a few days past, in circulating a petition for the commutation of the sentence of her husband, from death to imprisonment for life. The petition has been very generally signed by the leading citizens of Grass Valley, and a considerable number of signatures have been obtained in other parts of the county. She will present it'to the Governor in person. Col, Baker telegraphed to Mrs Moore on Thursday, that he had strong hopes of securing a new trial. Taw Trans-ATLantic TELEGRAPH.—We see it stated in some of our exchanges, that the Submarine Telegraph Co. have fixed upon one dollar a word as the price of newspaper dispatches from London to New York. At this rate, one column in such a paper as the Herald will cost in the neighborhood of a thousand dollars. The principal New York papers, such as the Herald, Tribune and Times, it is said, will be compelled to raise the price of their subscription after the telegraph gets into operation. Acquirrep.—The trial of Edward McGowan was brought to a close on Monday night, June Ist, by his acquittal. The jury were out but a few minutes. There was no evidence before the Court which in the least implicated the accused in the killing of James King, nor was it shown that he had any knowledge that Casey intended to make the attack, On the rendition of the verdict it was immediately entered upon the record, and McGowan wes discharged from custody. Heavy Farors.—Wm. G. Badger, an extensive clothing merchant of San Francisco, made application on Wednesday, June 84, for the benefit of the insolvent law. The depression in business, extortionate rates of interest paid, and the shipment from the East of unsaleable goods, not ordered, are the causes assigned for the failure. He places his liabilities at $31,334, assets nominally at $20,611, much of which is in uncertain accounts and valuless notes, Fine 1 San Francisco—The Genesee Steam Flouring Mills, on Gold street, San Francisco, were destroyed by fire on Sunday morning last. A quantity of grain and flour, belonging to Messrs, Kennedy & Hopkins, proprietors of the mill, was destroyed, and the interior of the building was burned, The toss is estimated to be from sixteen to eighteen thousand dollars. The outside of the building remains as it was, and the inside will be at once rebuilt, and the mill put in running order. San Francisco Treasurer.—Mr. Woods, the Treasurer of San Francisco county, has been temporarily suspended from office for an alledged defalcation, to the amount of $5,000. He contends that a wrong entry to that amount was made by a clerk in his office, who is now absent in the States, and offers to give security for the payment of the money should any deficiency be found to exist, Sierra Democracy.—The Democratic County Committee of Siera met at Downieville on the 8d inst, and called the primary elections for the 20th June, and the County Convention for the 2d of July. A_resolution was adopted permitting all to vote at the primary elections who did not vote against the democratic ticket at the last election, Arremrrep Rossery on ran Hiesway.—On Wednesday night, June 84,0 man who was taking coin up the country from Oroville, for the purchase of gold dust, was stopped on the road by a pad, who seized his horse’s bridle. The horse would not stand it, but broke loose carrying away his rider and the money. ‘ Surrment or Treasune.—The Panama steamship Jobn L. Stephens, which sailed on the 5th, carried treasure to the amount of $2,260,191, in gold. Newsparer ror Sats.—The San Francisco Sun is advertised to be sold at auction on the 13th inst., unless sooner disposed of at private sale, to close cut a co-partnership. Mas. Lespennisr is giving dramatic readings and recitations at Ororille. the, an Emperor Charles the fifth abdicating his throne. It was first seen in the year A. D. 104, and bas : J of about 291 years. It was retutned to our system at intervals for again in 1847, but did not appear, and astronomers have attributed its detention to the attraction of the planets, which retarded its movements, This comet moves in the same plane of the planets, and it is therefore possible that @ collision with seme of them may happen. The prediction in regard to this comet seems to have created an intense excitement in Gerfnany and France, and millions of pamphicts in regard to comets in general, and this one in particular, have met with a ready sale in those countries. There is not much sale for this description of literature in the United States, as the people here look to the newspapers for information upon such subjects, A translation of one of these pamphlets, which was originally published in the German, has made its appearance in San Francisco, and some of the papers of that city have taken copious extracts from it. It is entitled “The Ooming Comet, or the Destruction of the Earth Demonstrated,’’ by J. Gerotstein, A. M. F. R. 8. E. &c. We make the following extract : “The comet of 1264 and of 1556, has been computed and studied by Laland, who computed the comet of 1758 with so much accuracy, by Pingre, aud by several others, within the last and present century. It has been computed by Gauss and Gambart, in the early part of this century; all of whose computations rendered its approach a matter of great probability. But Mr Hind taking advantage of all these some: tations, and of the history of the comet, has been able to demonstrate the precise position of this great comet for*the 13th of June, 1867:— Sd, without knowing the computation of Mr. Hind, a German, unknown to fame, by the name of Mirantz, if we recollect aright, has arrived at the idendentical result, after months of labor. That two mathematicians, of whatever ability, without eollusion, should arrive at the same results, in a computation of so great magnitude, is the highest possible evidence of exactitude. But, as if such authority were not sufficient, even to the unprejudiced lore of the last half of the nineteenth century, the great comet comes slowly rolling into the planetary ecliptic, unchanged in characteristic elements, after an absence of three hundred and one years. God verifies the prediction of his true prophets, inspired by the Supreme Mind, The comet of i04, of 395, of 975, of 1264, of 1556, of 1857, is certainly approaching the path in which the earth travels round the sun. * No mortal man could calculate, with precision, its position for the 13th of June—between to-day and that time. One upacquainted with astronomy cannot conceive the mass of figures, and the concentration of intellect necessary for sucha computation. One year is little enough time for so greata labor. At this late hour, when the magnificent ambassador is already near the court to which he is accredited by Him who takes up the mountains as a ver little thing, and who holds the world in the hollow of His hand—at this late hour is far too late to verify, by actual computation, that sublime, but terrible, result. “But there is a test, that is beyond all argument, thatis above all logic, and that is experiment. We shall see soon enough,”’ Rica Strixes.—We yesterday examined a lot of about ten tons of rock on the platform at the Boston (French) Mill, from anew vein just opened a few miles above Nevada, The rock jac neaye deer yd rich appearance, It is now ing crushed. e location is most favorable for verlag, having an easy drainage of about 300 feet, Another lot of rock on the same platform from Messra. King & Co's vein, near the Winchester mill, is fully equal in richness to that which has been previously taken out. It is one of the most promising veins in this vicinity. Another vein has been opened within a few weeks upon another nM of the same hill, which has paid as high as $50 to the ton. As we go to press, the Gold Hill Mill is crushing « lot of about 80 tons of rock from School House Hill, which itis thought will rival in richness of the famous Allison lead. Several lota of rock have already been crushed from this vein each lot, we have understood, improving on the former. That now being crushed is estimated as high as $300 to the ton, The lucky ing he of this rich strike are Messrs, Stephen Fletcher, Thomas Woodville and Alphonso Morehouse,—three energetic
and industrious miners, in whose success we most heartily rejoice, Another party recentiy opened a second very rich vein,on the same hill and but few rods distant. This locality is but a few hundred yards from the center of town, and affords another evidence of the untold wealth which yet lies undiscovered within the bosom of the earth, all around us.—G@. V. Telegraph. Innate DePravity.—The San Joaquin Repudlican of the 2d instant says :—‘We were forcibly impressed yesterday with the truth of the old adage, ‘that honesty is the best policy,’ by listening to the evidence against a man on trial for cattle stealing. The prisoner was a genteel intelligent looking man, and previous to his arrest and for the crime which has consigned him to ignominy and a felon’s doom, he bore an enviable reputation among his neighbors for integrity and strict morality. A yonug man with good capacities, an honest name, and a young and happy wife, he renren every inducement to pursue an uprig inordinate love of gain, or to an innate propensity to rascality, he took to stealing his neighbor’s cattle, apparently relying upon his reputation to shield him from doa Ay or punishment. Now he is convicted felon—his name and hopes blasted, his hearth desolaie, and his young wife broken-hearted, ‘The way of the transgressor is hard’—the occupation of the cow-stealing unprofitable, not to say dangerous especially when, as in this case, the tran does not go more than six miles from home to do his stealing, Propuct or tHe Mexican Mines,—The total pes naib of the precious metals from Mexico’ between 1825 and 1851, a period of 26 years, was $237,026,061, an average of nearly ten millions of dollarsannually. Judging from the very large shipments constantly made at all the ports of the Republic, on the Pacific and the Gulf alike, the exports the present year will far exceed that amonat, The mines were never in & more prosperous state, Harvestine iy tue Norrs.—The Red Bluff Beacon says that the farmers in that vicinity have commenced harvesting grain. He says that the first subject which claimed his attention upon assuming his office was the faet that an American citizen was confined in one of the La Paz dungeons, where he had been lying for a year without having been allowed a hearing on the charge against him, which was for filibustering, entering into a newspaper defence against the . and where he would probably bave remained calumnies and misrepresentations of my adver. for jife had it not been for the interference of saries.
