LOCAL MATTERS.
Tue County JatL.—The Transcript of yesterday morning had quite a lengthy article on
the subject of the county jail, and jails in general, and some of its suggestions are doubtless
worthy of attention. But the assertion that
the partition walls between the cells are not .
good, was evidently made in ignorance of the .
actual condition of the jail. A year or two ago .
the partitions between some of the cells were
rebuilt of large cut granite rocks, which were
fastened together with iron bolts. It has always been understood that desperate criminals
would be confined in one of these secure cells,
while the lesser criminals could be allowed to
occupy the other cells and the corridor. The
jail was built with the view of having it as secure as possible, and we think it is one of the
dest in the State, provided the officers having it
in charge would take the precaution to keep the
door closed. So far as we can judge, the attention of the public has not been entirely engrossed in contemplating the ‘condition of the
county jail;” but rather in astonishment at the
negligence of those having charge of the pris.
oners. Many big and little raseals have escaped
from the jail in the past four or five years, and
nearly every escape can be traced to carelessness
on the part of the officers. Instead of a “radical .
change in the interior of the jail,” as recom.
mended by the Transcript, we would recom.
end a radical change in the manner of keeping .
prisoners—or rather in the manner of affording .
them facilities to escape.
Tue Fovrtu.—lIt is generally understood
that we are to have a celebration on the anni.
versary of our National Independence; but thus .
far we believe no action has been had except
by the Fire Department, who have determined
to turn out in procession, and have extended .
