The woodland pres is dimly blue creeps from cots unseen, Ana briery hedge and meadow green Put on their white night-robe of dew. And hag § sound that breaks the calm 14 lullaby to rest All is except the breast That needs the most its soothing balm. The Age of our Earth. We extract the following from Agassiz’s article on “Methode of Study in Natural History,” ia the May number of the Atlantic Monthly: Among the astounding discoveries of modern ecience is that of the immense periods which bave passed in the gradual formation of our earth. So vast were the cycles of time preceding even the appearance of man on the surface of our globe, that our own period seems as yesterday when compared with the epochs that have gone before it, Had we only the evidence of the deposits of rock heaped above each otber in regular strata by the slow accumulatien of materials, they alone would conwince us of the long and slow maturing of <Jod’s work on the earth, but when we add to these the successive populations of whose life this world hasbeen the theater, and whose remains are hidden in the rocks into which the mud or eand or soil of whatever hind on which they lived bas hardened in the course of time—or the enormous chains of mountains whose upheaval divided these periods of quiet accumulation by great convalsions—or the changes of a different nature in the configuration of our globe, as the sinking of lands beneath the ocean, or the gradual rising of continents and islands above it—or the wearing of great river beds, or the filling of extensive water basins, till marshes first and then dry land succeeded to inland eeas—or the slow gtowth of coral reefs, those wonderful seawalle by the little ocean-architects whose own bodies furnish both the building stones and the cement that biods them together, and who bave worked so busily during the long centuries, that there are extensive countries, mountain chains, islands, and long lines of coast consisting solely of their remains—or the couotiess foreste that must have grown, flourished, died and decayed, to fill the storehouse of coal that feed the fires of the human race to-day—if we consider all these records of the past, the intellect fails to grasp a chronology for wbich our experience furnishes no data, and the time that lies behind us seems as much ao eternity to our conception as the future that etretches indefinitely before us, SUBTERRANEAN RatLway 1n Loxpox.—A eubterranean railway is now in an advanced state of construction, ranning about four and a half miles under the city of London. It commences at Victoria street, in the midst of what was formerly a diereputable thorougbfare, but is now acommon center for the Great Northern, the London, Chatham and Dover, and the Metropolitan lives. From that poiot it passes eastwardly, baving a large namber of intermediate stations. On the occasion of a recent trip made through a portion of its length, the air was found to be perfectly sweet, and free from all unpleasantness and dampoecs. The locomotives used condense the steam and consume their own smoke, so that nei ther gas nor vapor is perenne The eurface of the rail is made of steel. The line is made for two gages, and it basa double track throughout, The carriages will be roomy, well ventilated, and lighted with portable gas. It is expected that the oo will be opened about the middle of une. Tae Terms oF OapiruLatTion.— Forts Jackson and Pike, on the Mississippi, were gallantly defended by the rebels. They fought nobly and still were no match for our fleet, for it sailed past them, through their fire, and dashed into the face of the Holling (rebel) fleet of gunboats above and destroyed fourteen of them! The fleet iu part went up to New Orleans, and a portion of it was placed eo as to prevent supplies reaching the beleaguered forts, and when the rebels saw that they were completely caged they hung out a white flag, and terms of capitulation were entered into, These terme allowed the officers to retain their side arms, and to be at liberty on giving tbeir parole of bonor that they would not serve againet the United States until regularly exchanged, The non-commissioned officers, musicians and privates were also allowed to retire on parole, their commanding officers being responsible for them. All public property in the forts, arms, muni— etc., to be delivered up to the United States. A scampisn fellow was talking of taking a trip to France, when a companion meet+ ing bim in the street, inquired, “Well, Brown, my boy, when are you off?” “To-morrow.” “Going to take your wife with you?” “No; it is a voyage of pleasure.” 1) eM, M i in “A his speech at the meet the A Temperance Union, New York, May 14th, “The Quakers are oes for the Unios.
