ictal netic i Fs 3 NEVADA DEMOCRAT. WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 16, 1858. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Svrcrpr.—Mr. E. M. Davidson committed suicide, at Rough & Ready, on Sunday last. by taking laudanum. He was in Nevada a week ago last Saturday, and drank considerably during the day, and at night got into the Sacramento stage for the purpose of going home, When the stage arrived at Rough & Ready, he never even went to his house, but drank two or three times, and got inte the stage again, and said be was going to Frazer river. He returned to Rough & Ready last Saturday evening, having been absent a week, and from his actions his friends were satisfied he had been drinking very much during his absence. He stated that he went to San Franciseo, and while there borrowed $300 of a friend to pay his expenses to Frazer river; that he took two glasses of liquor inthe Union Restaurant and was drugged; that when he come to his right mind bis money was missing; that he then went to Dr. Teland, who told him that he was poisoned, and could not live long, and that laudanum was the best medicine he could take. He bad some laudanum in his possession when he returned, which he had been taking, and procured another vial of the drug from Dr. Ray. He stated to some cf his friends on Saturday eveuing that he should die the next day, andall they had to do was to follow him to the grave. He was very sick during Saturday night, and was) closely watched by his wife and friends. On Sunday, he induced Mrs. Davidson to leave the . room, and during he: absence. he swallowed a . quantity of laudanum and filled the vial with brandy: He soon became insensible, and died County Convention.—The Demoeratic Cen-. Tue Dirrerexce.—In the San Francisco potral Committee, for Nevada county, met in this. lice court, on Tuesday the 8th inst., were some city on Saturday, aod called a County Conven. forty persons charged with violating the Suation to meet on Saturday, the 10th proximo—. day law. The Cal thus speaks of one of the DRY GOODS & CLOHTING. ASTONISHING! ASTONISHING!!! BOOK STORES. “GEO. W.WELCH, the delegates to be elected on the 3d. The) Committee have made an innovation upon the manner of representation heretofore adopted in this county. The delegates are to be elected by precinete instead of townships. This change will give the small precincts an advantage over the more populous ones, as many of them have not mere than half enough votes to entitle them to a delegate; but by the system heretefore in vogue, the small precincts were not represent. ed at all, and cousequently had no voice in the Convention. We notice that all the principal mining counties have adopted the tystem of electing delegates by precincts, and the change . made by the Committee. we believe, will be generally approved by the Democracy of the county. The resolutions of the Committee, and the apportionment of delegates, will be found . on the preceding page, to which we direct attention. Civug To THE Rossery.—It was rumored in in town yesterday and Mondny, that William Marshall, now under arrest charged with being concerned in the late stage robbery, has been makir g confessions to the officers, acknowledgthat he took part in the rebbery, and implicating feur or five others, some of whom are now under arrest. Other parties, not heretofore suspected, are also implicated, but as they have not been arrested, we are advised not to publish their pbames, The grand jury will examine this case today, when something deffiuite in regard to the guilt or innosenee of the parties implicated will be known, Fourtu or Juty.—The Nevada Rifles, with s Cages : “Among them was a sickly-looking female, who, owing to ill health as she said, had not been able to have her house open for several days. A vigilaut guardian of the public safety swore, however, that at about the hour of niue in the evening of Sunday, he saw her sell two cigars for two bits! She had no friends nor counsel, sod was—convicted of course! This was the only conviction out of the whole lot. Served her right! for she was poor, sick, and had a reputation tattered and torn! What . right had she to sell only two cigars for two . bits, at 9 o'clock on Sunday night? If she had . sold two thousand, she could have feed a lawyer and—eecaped punishment !’’ ETERS ELLE MELE IERIE LEER LEA TILE ETAL LEI, SPECIAL NOTICES. Dry Goops.—-Messrs. Dr. Wickes used every effort to save . the injured limb, but at length informed Smith that his life could not be saved uuless the limb . was amputated, and preparations made to perform the opera. tion. His trieuds then gathered around, and . declared that the limb should not be amputated . until Father Dalton, who resides at Grass Valley, was sent for. Tle was taken off the table, and commenced sinking very fast, and when Father Dalton acrived he was so low that . no hopes were entertained of eaving his life, and in an hour or twoafter he died. Mr. Smith was an Irishman by birth, and about 26 ycars of age. and he was placed on a table . then INptan Kitiep.—-Oa Tuesday, the 8th inst., avumber of drvaken Indians came te the ranch of Mr. Faylor, st Penn Valley, during bis ab. sence from home, There was one sober one . among them, and he advised the family to close . the doors, stating that his comrades were all . insane from the effects of liquor. The doors} were accordingly elosed and fastened, and a} general fight soon commenced among the rav. ages. which resulted in one of them shooting . auother in the back with an arrow, killing him instantly. The pointef the arrow, it is supposed must have penetrated the beart. The murdered Indian belenged at Penn Valley. The murderer was afterwards regularly tricd by the Indiaus, whe decided that it was a case of “justifiable homieidc'’—the fact that he was drunk being eousidered a good defense. It is} not known where they got their liquor. We believe there ig a statute agaiust selling liquor . to Indians, te violate which, subjects the parties to severe penalties; the law, however seems to be but little regarded by some liquor dealere, fer it isa common occurrence to see drunken Iadians lying around the streets of the mining towns. Tue Rusw ror Frazer.—On Monday night. no less than seventy persous left this place and Grars Valley, in the Sacramento stages, bound for Frazer river. The stage company were complied to put on several extra coaches. From what we can learn, by conversations with these whe intend leaving, we judge that the gtand rush for Frazer will not commence before the first or middle of July, as there are many who intend leaving about that time. A centinuation of favorable news will make fearful havoc among the miuing population of this section. Giosep up.—The store of H. Berwin, of Grass Valley, was clored up last week, in consequence, of several attachment suits being commenced against him by his creditors in San Francisco. Suits were commenced in the District Court by the following parties: H. Reyman, for $3,152: Benjamin Cobn, for $2.104; Goldstone, Friedlander & Co., for $3,200; King, Berwin & Co., for $1,335 50; Neustadter Bros., for $537; Reinhardt Bros. & Cuo., $331 38—making in the azgregate, $10,659 88, for which attachments Were issued. Backen Down.—The foot race which was made up between “Soda Bill’’ and Jack Maiden, to he run last Sunday at Hughes’ race track, did not come offas anneunced. Maiden backed down and paid the forfeit. sanlt with deadly weapon—and R. H. Thayer, for obtaining money undcr false pretenses, were dismissed. REBCILDING.—The work of rebuilding the . town is progressing slowly, but steadily Yerterday, we counted sixty-five buildings, which had been put up and commeneed since the fire, and near half of (he burnt dietriet is now corcred with houres, It is the design of the owners of eome of the more eligible lots to erect brick buildings upon them, and they are oow only waiting until brick can be procured, Faneweir Seruon.—Rev.
