LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
New Process ro Cottect Desrs.—Mr. J. K.
Brooks. a trader at Hunt's Hill, bas edopted a
new system for the colleetion of accounts,
which is intended to do away with the necessity of the intervention of Justices and Constaples, and to supply the place of the late stringent attachment law. One day last week, in
yiew of the near approach of “steamer day,”
and of his obligations to his own creditors, Mr.
Brooks transferred a number of accounts on to
separate slips of paper, and started out in
search of his slow-paying customers, Among
others, he called on Joseph Shelden, and requested the payment of asmall balance due
from him. Sbelden denied the indebtedness,
aud in the course of conversation, intimated
that Brooks’ accounts were not kept very honestly; upou this, the latter drew a knife, made
at the delinquent debtor, and chased him about
a hundred yards, striking at every step, but in
consequence of the distance between them, the
fierce blows were spent upon the thin air. The
thought of the knife which was being flourished
behind bim, caused Shelden to put forth superhuman exertions, and at every step the distauce
between the deadly weapon and himself was increased. After running some distance, Shelden
seized a billet of wood which lay convenieutly
on his track, and turned ou his pursuer,—
Brooks, secing the new attitude assumed by his .
ficeing debtor, suddeuly became exhausted aud
gave up the chase. Shelden, however, after recovering his breath, continued on bis course,
and brought up at the office of Justice Aaderson, iu this place. In due time a warrant was
issued, and the next day Brooks was brought
before the Court on a charge of “assault with
iutent to do serious bodily harm; but after a}
careful hearing of the facts, the defendant was
discharged, and permitted to go hence without
the presence of the august tribunal. The examination assumed such a comical turn, that
the belligerants became goed natured, and at
the couclusion of the trial, Shelden forked ever
the amount of his indebtedness to Brooks. with
the understanding that they should be good
friends again.

Fata. Arrray.—A_ difficulty occurred on
Sunday last. at North San Juan, between Wim.
Carroll and E. Vo Hatfield, which resulted in .
the death of the former. It seems that on Saturday, a brother of Carroll had a difficulty with
Hatfield, aud on Sunday afterugou, Win, Carroll met Hatfield in Sheridan’s taloon, took up
his brother's dispute, aud caught Hatlield and .
threw bim down, but was preveuted from siri.
king bim by some bystanders, who started to)
put Carroll out of the house. Haticld imme.
diately jumped up, caaght his revolver and .
with it struek Carroll once or twice ever the
head. They were again separated, when Mat: .
field threw the revolver at Carroll, whieh struck .
the pavement pear where Carroll stood, and
was discharged; the ball cutered his abdomen .
and came out at the baek,

the resolution of the Ceutral Committees, define .

meeting, in this county, The call for the meet: .
ing is not worded fairly, as the Central Committee have notinvited Black Republicans or .
members of other parties to participate with .
the Democrats, as will be readily seen by exsininiug the resaiution. In may of the coun.
ties the Committees have decided that
should participate in the primary election, except those who voted the Democratic Ucket last .
year, but in this county it was theaght that ma-)
ny Democrats vo.ed against Judge Walsh .
through false representations, and it was therefore deemed unjust to exelude them from the
primary meetings, Had the Committee estab.
lished the usual test, it is doubtful whether half
ef the signers of thia eall would be ranked .
among Democrats. Those that worked and vo.
ted against a portion of the Democratic ticket
last year are the Inst that ehould complain of .

Suerce Ropsrse.—The sluice boxes of Mr. O.

been committed by Chinese, asa fewef them

APPORTIONMENT OF DeLeGaTes.—In making .
up the apportionment of delegates to the Coun.
ty Convention, a mistake occurred in the precinets of Washington, Omega, and Red Dog. .
Those precincts are each entitled to two delegates instead of one. as priated last week, as
more than fifty votes were castin each for
State Printer, which was selected as the standard Democratic vote. On examining the first .
draft of the apportionment, made out by the
Committee, we noticed the numbers were cor.

Committee.

a dwelling-house on his way, and thinking that
the family were thereby exposed to vocturual

Poets sing of the spicies in Indian Isles,
Of the citron, the orarge and lime;
They sing of the fragrance so lavish diffus’d,
By the breeze in cach tropical clime.
Let the epicure boast of each high-flavor’d dish,
The flavor of wines or French brandy,
Yet none of the list named above can compare
With J. Regan’s “Steam Retin’d Candy.”
Rich spices and fruits and sweet flowers may be good,
Or dishes for epicures dainty ;
But the question in this I will net debate,
Yet each have admirers in plenty.
Withal, there are none of them half so well prized,
From the sweet prattling child to the dandy,
As that sweetest of sweets, everywhere idolized—1 mean Regan’s ‘Steam Refine’d Candy,’
“egan”’ was first, on the Pacific Coast,
Who made confections—the fact is known well;
Tho’ ’twas seven years since, he continues it still,
And sells by wholesale and retail,
He is selling bis stock at such reduced rates,
That purchasers are always handy,
And they find each variety known to the trade,
Among J. Regan’s ‘Steam Refin’d Candy.”
Here's an hundred varieties that need net be nam'd
And being made by the new improved process;
He can sell his goods cheaper than any other man,
For parties, to families or grocers.
Of French candies now, his assortment is large,
