A “LOCAL MATTERS, _ Cieck-MATED.—Two or three weeks since some four or five enterprising citizens of this place conceived the brilliant idea of getting up an entertainment of some description on the occasion of the approaching Anniversary of our National Independence. For this purpose one of their number went to San Francisco, where, as he thought, he effected an arrangement with Mr. McGuire, for the Hanlon Brothers—the acrobats who have created such a sensation in the Bay City by their wonderful gymnastic feats. On the return of the agent, a citizens’ meeting was called and active preparations made for the celebration of the Fourth, and, singular enough, the names of some of those interested in the show were placed on the Committee of Arrangements for the celebration, and we are assured by those who profess to know, that the programme was to be so arranged as not to allow the patriotic demonstrations of our citizens to interfere with the performances of the acrobats. In fact we were to have nothing like a good old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration, but merely give out that we would have, for the purpose of inducing people from a distance to visit our town that they might leave their dollor for the benefit of those interested in the show of the Hanlon Brothers. This programme would doubtless have been carried out had not Tom McGuire secedded, and instead of hiring out his acrobats, concluded to send them here on As soon as this fact became known to his own account, our enterprising showmen, they determined to prevent McGuire’s troupe from performing here on that day, and with that view have leased or engaged, as they supposed, every vacant lot in town, of sufficient size to spread the canvas. In this move, however we are happy to ! inform them that they have been check-matedA lot has been procured, of ample size, and in . acentral pat of town. The celebration will take place, and after we have marched in procession around town, listened to the reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a short . oration, if there are any who desire to witness the performance of the Hanlon Brothers, they will have an opportunity of doing so. PuLLeEp Down.—Some time last night, the frame which Messrs. Rich & Styles have been . putting up near the further end of the Pine street bridge, and intended for a sash factory, was partly torn down, and the structure pretty much destroyed, The plates were sawed off, and the bent next to the creek was pulled over. ‘Lhe structure was commenced upon the ground formerly occupied by the old bridge, which be. longed to the city, and the Town Trustees had . protested with Messrs. Rich & Styles against going on with the building, and finally commenced a suit against them for obstructing the . road. The case has been sent vo the Court of . Session; but the work on the building was continued, and last night some one took the law into his own hands and pulled it down. There are several good reasons why the building . should not be put up at that place. It endan. ‘TiBATER.—Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Pope, accompanied by a full stock company, arrived in town this afternoon and will appear at the Nevada Theater this evening, in the thrilling play of “I'he Marble Heart.” Mr. and Mrs.Pope are too well known to require a lengthy notice from us. There . has been much ill feeling on the part of our . citizens against Messrs. Rich & Styles, fer . persisting in going on with the building and . the Trustees have also been blamed for not . getting out an injunction or adopting some . measure that would stop the work. } —Since the above was in type we learn that it was by order of the Trustees that the frame was torn down. Having tried all mild means . ! to prevent the erection of a building at that point, without effect, they adopted this course to abate the nuisance. Boarn oF SurERVISORS.—A special session of the Board of Supervisors was held on Monday, and a number of orders made, the most of which were of no general interest. Mr. D. P. Walter was appointed Justice of the . Peace for Bloomfield township, in place of W. Andrews, resigned, and having filed his bond was qualified for the discharge of the duties of the office. S. Slusher was appointed Road Overseer for District No. 22, and Wm. 8S. Frink for District No.3, in place of former appointees who had failed to qualify. Accounts were allowed on the special fund, amounting to about five hundred dollars. Lecture or Bisnor Kip.—The Rt. Rev. Bishop Kip, of the Episcopal Church, is announced to deliver a lecture in Nevada, on the evening of June 30th. The proceeds of the lecture will be apPropriated for the benefit of the Episcopal Church of Nevada. j Mr. O’Byrnxe’s Lecture.—The lecture of . Mr. O'Byrne yesterday evening was attended . by a respectable though not a large audience, and we hear but one expression of opinion in . Tegard to its merits. The lecture was an ex. cellent one; and though the lecturer has evidently had but little experience in speaking, and his manner of delivering is not pleasing, yet the matter of the lecture interested the audience, and he was listened to witb attention. .
