a ie ‘Bevada Democrat. . . their recurrence ofall persons of plethoric habits, Fire ALARMS.—There was an alarm of fire yesterday evening, occasioned by the burning . out of a chimney in a building adjoining the . Golden Gate Hotel. The fire companies were soon out, and No, 2's and the Hook and Lad. ‘ i der Companies, whose houses were near by, . had their tools out and ready for operations, . and were greatly disappointed to learn that . their services were not needed. About eleven . o'clock to-day, the Department was again called out by an alarm proceeding from the Nevada . Foundry. A fire had taken in the roof of the . building, but the proprietors of the Foundry keep several barrels of water on the roof, by which means the fire was extinguished before . any damage was done. Mivitary ELection.—The election of officers of the military company now being organized in this place, will be held at the Theater, at two o'clock to-morrow, instead of Saturday, . as stated in our last. A member of the company informed us the election would be held . on Saturday, but it appears he got his information from the Transcript, which happened to be . wrong. Mr. Green informs us that the company is now nearly full, about one hundred members having signed the roll. Cuter Enctneer.—The election, on Tuesday afternoon, for Chief Engineer of the Fire . Department, resulted in the choice of Frank . Fisher. The vote stood: Fisher, 79; Williamson, 70. Fisher is an old fireman, and we doubt not will make an efficient Chief Engineer. He was nominated by Pennsylvania, No. . 2, and received the vote of every member of the company. Two of the members who were absent from town on business, came a distance of twenty miles expressly to vote for Fisher. ADDITIONAL Detecates.—The following are the names of delegates elected to the County Convention, in additien to those reported in our last: Nevada Township.—Geo. Baker, ——Stephens. Grass Valley.—Jas. 8. Montgomery. Kureka.—Wm. P. Morris. Bloomflald.—Lee Gartha. Washington.—Peter McGloin, Daniel Dillon. County Court, yesterday, Judge Belden presiding. The case of the people vs. Jennings, set for trial on Friday next. The cases of Icard vs. Thomson, and Walworth ys. Williams, were dismissed. Hoffner vs. Rochford—testimony heard, and case continued for argument until Friday. Court adjourned until ten o’clock on Friday. Opp FeLLow’s ELxcrion.—Ata meeting of Oustomah Lodge, I. O. O. F., held on Tuesday evening, the following officers were elected for the ensuing term: J. W. Chinn, N.G.; A. H. Parker, V. G.; J. S. Lambert, Treasurer; A. P. ‘Church, Secretary. PeRSONAL.—Henry G. Phillip, an old and esteemed citizen of this county, who has been absent on a visit tothe East, was among the passengers on the St. Louis. RsBTcRNED.—Dr. N. McNaughton, after an absence of some weeks on a professional tour, has returned to Nevada, and is again holding forth on the side-walks. ASSISTANT ENGINEER.—We learn that Mr. Fisher has appointed Wallace Williams, of Hose Co. No. 1, as Assistant Engineer of the Fire Department. Esterprisg of New York Papers,—A Washington correspondent says: The New York papers make astonishing efforts to get intelligence. There are, for instance, four men here regularly employed by . the New York Herald to send news ; and they . are instructed not to send anything by mail, but everything by ere Their carriage hire and all incidental expenses are paid by the . Herald office, and they search the camps, public offices and public resorts daily for ‘ news,” and send it offto the Herald in wads by the telegraph. And the other great New York papers ieee equally extravagant establishments. . (here was a cannonade at Aquai Creek the . other day. The Herald had a “ special” on . one of the vessels engaged. As soon as he ar. rived here he wrote out all he could tell of the . fight and sent it by telegra And the correspondent was atthe Navy rtment when the . official repert of the action reached the Secrcta. ry,and as soon as it could be copied and ex. pressed to the telegraph office it was off. Still another correspondent visited the Navy Yard, found the officers who had been engaged, visit. cd the battered vessels, and telegraphed all the . items that could be gatheredin that way. And . the people of Washington kad the pleasure of . reading the “ full particulars” of the fight when they got the New York papers ; and before that . time they knew very little about it, beyend the . fact that there had been a brush of some kind, . and “ nobody hurt ” on our side. Purr Correnr.—A few days since the mi-. ners on the Keystone claim, at Coppereppolis, dug out a mass of native copper, very little inixed with foreign substances, which weight d 700 pounds. The same day, in the sameclaim, a mass of unmixed metal, bright and pure, was dug out, weighing twenty pounds. The first . mass is worth about ¢120; the last $4. Crreese Linexaciry.—The Chinese of San Andreas have clu »bed together and contributed $350 toward the purchase of a fire engine for . the use of the town. —_—— Tax Stockton Republican says a small shipment of new barley was made on the 8th from that city to San Francisco. . sufferers from scrofula, cutaneous eruptions, stubborn ulcers from an injadicious use of mercury, and in chronic constitutional disorders should have resort to Sanps’ SARSAPARILLA, the original and genuine article so long celebrated for the cure of the abuve named diseases, and all others arising from an . impoverished, vitiated or inflamed condition of the blood or habit of the system, P, M.
